Can't decide... Axxis/PBR Ultimate or Hawk HPS pads?
 

Hello,

A while back I had decided to get some PBR/Axxis Ultimate pads when I change my rotors but after some more reearch it looks like the Hawk FPS pads are also pretty good. I'm mostly concerned about stopping power and noise - I don't really care about the dust so much (although I'd like the pad to last more than 1 year too :), and not kill the rotors in the process).

What do you fellow 6th genners prefer? Can anyone comment on the noise levels and stopping power of each of these pads?

do not get axxis/pbr ultimates...they freakin blow....squeal and dust like no tomorrow....stopping power is great...but i can't STAND the incredible amounts of dust...and OMG the squeal!!!! :nupe500:

I have Hawk HPS pads on my 300ZX calipers. They seem fine so far.

Ok, thanks for the feedback... sounds like I'll probably go with the Hawk HPS.

I had Monroe Ultimate street pads.

WOW, i think i will take off mine AXXIS ultimate in favour of putting on another set of Monroes. They were great and if you saw shipping and boxing and warranty and install instructions.

All in the box.

So are the Monroe Ultimate street pads noisy? Do they dust much, how about stopping power?

Not at all, I just bought a set of PBR/Ultimate from Automax95 and I'm taking them off in Lieu of the Monroe.

Those pads were wicked, great warranty and everything, I took them off after a day at the track and they had a bit of wear and were holding up pretty well. Stupid me threw them in the garbage when I took them off the car to install the PBR. Now i regret it.

Lunch time over, back to work.

DUST: ceramic pads, little tiny bit of dust
NOISE: not at all
STOP: awesome stopping power, same as the PBR, but got much hotter.

Same here, mine are starting to squeal and the front wheels are always dirty as hell. They stop great but il probably be switching pads in the future.

I've only had mine on for less then a month, and the dust is pretty bad to say the least. I've noticed a squeak already, so we'll just have to see what happens.

STAY AWAY FROM PBR/AXXIS METAL MASTERS. I tried both the deluxe version- they are like snowcones..The Ceramic ultimates are on the maxima now, they stop very well...but not hardly worth the excessive squealing and dust. My front rims are always dirty as sin! Go with the Akebonos...don't know about the Hawks...

I had Axxis Ultimates and they worked very well, but made a fair amount of dust and didn't last very long. I now have Hawk HPSs, which take a little longer to warm up but work MUCH better than the Ultimates when warm. Plus, they last a lot longer and hardly make a peep.

here are a couple different sites that offer different pads....... ceramics here..... http://www.ceramicool.com/overview.html and kevlar which I recommend here...... http://www.brakeworld.com/rotex-brake-pads.asp you can buy them off of brakeworld.com if you want they are fairly inexpensive.... cost may seem high but in reality these will last at least twice the life of oem brake pads......

OK, thanks everyone for your opinions... I think I've decided to go with the Hawk pads, but not sure if I should go with the HPS street pads or the Hawk performance ceramic pads, although I'm leaning towards the ceramics because of less dust.

I know plenty of people here are using the HPS pads and like the, but does anyone use the ceramic pads? I've read (and searched...) but couldn't find much info about these. Do ceramics tend to squeel much? From reading the reviews at tirerack, there have been mixed reports of squeeling (from both the HPS and ceramic pads). Are they any harder on the rotors?

Thanks guys... my pads are getting really warn and my rotors are warped. I think I really want to go with the Hawks, but not sure whether I should do with the Hawk Ceramics or the Hawk HPS? Are there any downsides with the ceramics? Hawk says that the ceramics and very quiet, last a long time, are easy on the rotors and don't dust much (although I'm not sure how its possible for all of the conditions to be met with a pad that doesn't cost an arm and a leg... ?). Also, the reviews over at the tirerack seem to be pretty good for both pads (Hawk HPS and Hawk Ceramics), but based on the supposed advantages I think I'd rather go for the ceramics. Are there any downsides with ceramic pads? Will they still grip well when cold, etc?

I'd like to order these soon so I can repace my worn pads.

Monotour, did you search yet? I found a lot of opinions and testimony throughout the org.

I did... but I didn't see anything related to Hakd ceramic pads.

I got the Hawk HPS pads on my 03 with the Stillen/Brakepros (they're actually mfg. by Brembo) Cross-drilled Discs. The X-drilled rotors really give a splash of fast while being suttle behind the OEM rims. I point this out because my oem rotors were warpped BAD, and they were about $10 more average per axle set. The hawks don't SEEM like they produce alot of dust, and i agree that they take a little bit to heat up, but this combo, once they're warmed up, will outbrake my Michelin Pilot Sport A/S tires. If you want killer street brake performance, it's definately the way to go. The ceramics, according to a chart that was in the catalog that came from tirerack, show that they incorporate a more broad range of performance application, including partially into the HPS territory. My advice is get the ceramics unless you want the most performance in a non-modified fitment, and can deal with the slight softness when they're cold. I went for max braking due to the 0-80-40-95-60-0 nature of the highway traffic in my area and am very happy with them. As far as noise, they're very quiet, and at most, have only generated a faint hissing sound, and seldomly i get a brief squeek, usually if my car sits for more than a day.

Are you guys doing track time with your Maximas? If your not I have no idea why you would put another pad on other than say a Raybestos QS. Be honest, who is actually on a roadcourse? Autox does not count. My point is there is no advantage to upgrading your pad unless you need it. Don't just bolt on a performance pad because its cool to talk about.

Go with Hawk FPS...whatever that is.

Anyway, after further reading, I think I'll go with the Hawk Ceramic pads.
