Switching to syn***ic (yes I've read the oil forum!)
That forum seems to be mostly about older model Maximas.
I own a 05 SE with 40,000 miles, and http://www.mobil1.com recommends that I use Oil: Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5W-30 Filter: Mobil 1 Model M1-108 Good choices? Any other tips regarding the switch to synthetic? Thanks very much |

Some '02/'03 Max owner's have an oil consumption problem.
I was wondering if anyone with an '04 and newer one has any oil consumption issues? |
At about 9K miles I kicked to Mobile 1 sync (5W30) on my ride, zero problems!!! Actually all our vehicles use Mobile 1... Good choice and agree, you should have done it sooner, however just dump the old and fill with the new, no special prep for changeover...

I switched my car to synthetic at about 20K, now I have 40K and no problem at all.

castro bulk is sync?

If you are using synthetic, any OCI less than 7,500 miles is a waste of resources -- unless you are driving in extreme conditions (dusty dirt roads or taxi-cab like city driving). |
Same exact setup as in post one, same oil and filter specs since 6K (prolly a bit too soon) no problems, no oil consumption. Used to change every 5K, then every 6K now every 8K
Hope this helps |
I did the change about 2000 miles ago, at 32000 miles, I bought the car at 31000 and I run synthetic in my audi and toyota corolla also ( cuz this 4 cylnder engines really need that synthetic lol) but to mee its a problem free thing I change my oil and filter every 5000 miles keeping things simple.

A poster earlier in this thread asked 'is it too late to switch' (to synthetic).
The answer is that it is never too late to switch to synthetic. The only possible problem comes with switching too soon. I have seen many techs over the years say the engine will break in far better if allowed to run with dino oil the first ten to twenty K. That is because synthetic oil is so 'good' it prevents the very slight wear needed to allow moving engine parts to fit together pefectly. As a result, the engine will not run quite as efficiently, as it essentially was never completely broken in. Of course there are those who switch to synthetic the day they drive their car off the dealer's lot, and they swear by the fact they have had no trouble. But they don't understand their engine may not be running as efficiently as it would with proper break-in. As with many here, I usually switch after the warranty is up, as the warranty expects an oil change at least every 7500 miles, and synthetic oil is so good it is wasteful to use it less than 10,000 miles (with a filter change each 5,000). But everyone sees things differently . . . |
^^^ There you have it all in one post, from a man who knows what he's talking about. As stated earilier Mobil 1 is quality product and pairing it with Mobil 1 filter makes a great combo. Go for it dude, the sooner the better.

Edit: Btw I have heard of Truckers driving cross-country using mobil one and being able to drive 100,000 miles on the same oil. Provided that they change the oil filter at a certain intervel which I cannot remember (around 10,000 miles) and also just toping off the oil to compensate for the oil that has been burned off. So I wouldnt recomend that. But I can say its been done.... So they must have something on their hands right? |
I was told by a very reputable source (someone who wouldn't like my car to go bad) that I can safely change the synthetic every 10-15K miles or 12 months, whichever comes first.
As stated earlier, I have been changing every 5K, then every 6K and now every 8K, Look at the oil you pour out after 5K, its friikin' clean! |
I would second the recommendations in the Fluids and Lubes section of this site -- send a sample of your motor oil to the lab for testing -- particularly if you plan to increase your OCI to anything like 10 to 12 K miles.
I don't feel a need to pay for lab testing because I change at 7.5 K miles -- but if I do go the the higher OCIs, I too will get at least a few lab tests to prove that the oil is good for the full distance. |
