I've changed my oil but have no receipts...

Hello, brothers and sisters

Just like many of you, I've changed my own oil and filters on every car I've ever owned. But, I never bothered to save any receipts. I know several of the folks at my dealership by name, and I've always assumed that since my car is still beautiful inside and out, they would never question my word if I needed to tell them for warranty purposes that I changed oil and filter every 3500-4000 miles. However, I'm not so sure my word alone would suffice after reading a couple of recent posts on this forum. Has anyone actually had to deal with this issue? Any advice? Thanks...

I'd think if you ever had to have your engine broken down that a mech. could tell if you maintained a clean routine or not.

Since I change my own oil/filter, I don't have receipts also, however if you're taking it in for warranty work, you don't have to prove to the stealership you changed your oil, they have to prove that you did something wrong to cause the problem, not the other way around. If you say you did it, they should take you at your word, or ask them to show you in writing where you must produce such evidence. Absolute BS IMO...

Chernmax and Roymg, thanks for your input--I feel better now. I'm going to talk with my dealership's people this weekend using (if necessary) Chernmax's reasoning above. Will post again after talking with them.

Spoke with a service rep at my dealer (Kelly Nissan) this AM. He said, keep the receipts, and if I haven't any to date, start NOW! Probably very few of us will ever need power train warranty service, but unless you want to risk a potentially ugly fight, you should be documenting routine maintenance you (or non-dealer facilities) are performing. My $.02...

I've asked around and if you have an engine related failure the dealership will send out the used oil and have it tested, which will tell them right away that it's not oil related

If they cannot prove that you caused the damage to the vehicle to a point that it will hold up in a court of law - you are fine.

The Magnuson-Moss warranty act of 1975 has your back on this one.

I've never had a problem (at VW dealerships) when you are within 'bumper to bumper' warranty. You should be good to go...

That is where I purchased my certified Max. Another dealer replaced the engine. My #2 cylinder decided to go and I complained to Nissan about it. The dealer claims that Nissan requested my oil change receipts. They felt stupid because they did 4 out of 5 oil changes and I faxed them the one they didn't do. I just feel it was something the service department did to my car. Runs like new and the new 3.5L makes no noises at all. They even did my brakes over for free and connected my 12" sub the right way.
