2004 max, what to do after I buy?

I plan to buy a 2004 max in april. (Unless I find a right priced 2005).

What should I do once I get the max?
Change the oil, trans fluid, spark plugs, etc ?

What should be checked/changed so the powertrain warranty remains valid?

SickSE 02-05-2008 12:40 PM

Whoa, Whoa, Whoa, .......Slow down man. First of all Congrats!!!

My opinion is not to go looking for things to spend money on maintenance wise, just keep the oil changed and depending on your mileage transmission flushed.

Whats the mileage etc.?

minsbang 02-05-2008 02:27 PM

let us know the # of miles that the max has and we'll take it from there.

VigilanteMax 02-05-2008 02:35 PM

I say drive it; that's what I do with mine.

Kryogen 02-05-2008 05:26 PM

Worth looking for a 05 ?
Even if 4-5000$ more ?

If you do get an 04, just make sure you watch out for the problems that many had/have with their 04s..... i.e. shimmy, transmission, etc....
Not all the 04s are bad - I have an 04 with 43k miles and have not had one single issue with it :)

I got My 04 in June of '03 and havent had any major problems, bad radio (replaced-free) new ECU (replaced-free).
An '04 in April will probably be out of waranty, so you may want to go '05 for some peace of mind.

carlosr 02-05-2008 06:24 PM

There were a few issues with early 04 maxima's I would try and look for a late production 04 or if possible an 05. There isn't much of a price difference between 04 and 05's just take your time and test drive them like you stole them. Decide what options your really want, and what you can live without. For me I only wanted a max with a sunroof (not skyview) and Navigation... didn't like the look of after market navi units. After market leather and HID kits on the other hand can easily be found/purchased and installed.

B/S, I've seen equally enough post by 05-06 owners complaining of problems. My 04 has been rock solid for 4.4+yrs now and has endured things most 05-08 Max would never even dream of. Just because the Max is an 05+ is NO guarantee you are receiving a better vehicle... All used cars are a roll of the dice...

I'll look into it in april I guess.

I just found a 2005 max w 40 000km for 19 000$ CAN which is cheap here. Most 2004 with 50-70K are like 18-20K CAN here, in montreal, quebec.

Problem is that there's a ton of 2004 to sell and only a few 2005, so they are more like 25K. But again, I saw a 2006 for 24K the other day.

So um, in april I'll have a good look, check carfax, and have it inspected and stuff.

Ppl are all buying 22K CAN$ cars (mazda3, civic) and even though they are nice little cars, I'd rather drive a used max for the same money.

minsbang 02-06-2008 05:53 AM

i've had my '04 for years without any problems. I'm current at 124,000 miles and it still runs like a new car.

LandsEnd 02-06-2008 11:53 AM

Those extra cheap cars where the price is too good to be true such as the 2006 you mentioned was probably in a wreck. Check its vin number.

NmexMAX 02-06-2008 12:02 PM

If you do go w/ an 04, stay away from the 4AT. Not for reliability, but more so for its horrifically long gear ratios.

JPIZZLE 02-06-2008 12:04 PM

IU will sell you my 2006 loaded with 32k miles on it for 26k! As it sits, I will even meet you half way to transport. I am expanding my family and need to get another SUV or Van!

I have a kick butt stereo, with JL Audio Amps and sub and Dyna Audio Fronts. Ingen Cold Air INtake, Tein super street Coilovers and Stillen front Strut bar/ rear sway bar. It is a automatice with factory nav/bluetooth and 6 disc changer.

Let me know!

siggy580 02-06-2008 04:21 PM

I have an 04/AT and it does have long gear ratios.. I have added several mods and really just losing low end and am always looking for advise on options to cure that. But no shimmy ever, and no codes thrown. I would have got a 6MT but the deal I got on mine was too good to pass up..But you cant go wrong with a 6th gen IMO.

Law520 02-06-2008 04:40 PM

Prepare a list of excuses for turning away those who ask for a ride.

Yea, that is true as well, but it's just a given that the "first year" of a new model is usually the one with all the little "bugs" in it.

Read any performance oriented threads that I've started and you will be well on your way.

I have been trying to read your threads (I find them everywhere on here). I have a y-pipe here and waiting to be installed and spacers coming (read they increase low end) but did not want to mess with a LRMAF as you have mentioned. And to be totally honest some of your posts are over my head so I have to back track to see what the hell you were talking about in the first place. So if want to point me in a "specific" direction I will keep reading......ugggggg

LRMAF wouldn't fit your car (direct bolt on anyhow).

04BlackMaxx 02-07-2008 06:46 AM

I have 80,000 miles on mine and it drives nearly the same as it did when i bought it with 9 miles. Plugs, wires, belts, etc not needed till 100-120k. All ive done is change the oil every 3k and its been trouble free mechanically. The steering is super sensitive, thats the shimmy people talk about just make sure its got good tires on it, my shimmy was remedied by new tires.

If they existed, change them, but VQ's don't have wires.

VQPRO 02-07-2008 09:35 AM

Before you purchase this car check the following tranny and engine mounts, also check recall service done, front struts and skyveiw, then drive up to 65mph and check brakes for vibration, check weatherstrips around doors and trunk make sure they are in good condition.

After you buy the car flush tranny fluid and engine oil ,replace your front disc (rotors) with some drill ones they cool better, change your stock goodyear tires for some toyo proxes 4 excellent tires , for better handling change your rear sway bar and front strut tower bar, also you can change your air filter with a apexi power filter

good luck

minsbang 02-07-2008 10:11 AM

if you can't afford a max in the end, there's always an altima. =)

farzin1 02-07-2008 10:38 AM

start driving it after you buy it
