Not by me but proof of how far we've come. And you J have been a battle field commander on modding and improvements! I still remember when 6th Gens were hated by the 2-5.5 Gen owners and now we hear, I'm getting a 6th Gen! Life rolls forward!!!

I did a master rebuild of the transmission and modified the Torque converter (300 extra stalls) and the Valve body (Level 10 uprade, by Level 10 transmission).

I would contact a tranny shop and let them run your VIN# to ensure you get the correct kit! There are differences between the 04-05 trannies.

The reason I say this is because I almost did a tranny swap first and had a great deal on an 05 tranny (5spd auto) with low miles only to find out they were not interchangable. The kit may work but there is a difference between an 04 and 05 tranny!

Maybe it's driving, maybe it's mods, maybe it's a bad design, my problem is too much power for the tranny, overall the tranny is poorly designed for the power of the VQ Engine and that is why many people are having issues. Like yourself, some people have no problems, but when you look at the problem from a national scale, the failure rate is higher than normal and needs to be fixed by Nissan!

So what is your country of origin, I work with many foreign students and many times when they speak they put the subject first in a sentence (Example: Store I Go verse I go to the store). I also lived in Japan for 12 years and understand what it feels like when people thought I was stupid not understanding their language. So, what country are you originally from???

Right there with ya brother...Jack neat. Water back. And a beer.

I understand most of what he is trying to say and I can understand how such a language barrier must be frustrating. Chern, you're a good man for having so much patience with one in need of assistance. Chern FTW

I know this thread is about 7 years old now, but I wonder how the op made out with his modded trans, and relatively high hp level now that the years have passed?

Also, I would like to know what his best track times were with higher boost.

I've finally finished my 05 Altima SER build, and I really had a time rebuilding my AW55 trans.

The main issue was the valve body. Spent a ton of money [all labor done by me, but I'm NOT a novice at this], one "Zip" shift kit from Sonnax, at around $300, and all new solenoids which were approx $500.

None of that worked. Trans still had issues, and after pulling it apart several times second guessing my work, I finally bought a new valve body for $1k, THAT fixed it, until the new torque convertor died.

Oh, and Makco transmission wouldn't refund, or replace the bad convertor as it was over a year old [probably less than ten miles on the damned thing].

Anyway, I rolled the dice, and bought a new TC from Autozone, and so far so good.

Also, I have found several things on the AW trans that can be improved if you want.

First the old fluid cooler is crap. I modded my Altima with an external cooler in front of the radiator, and an external filter so I can actually change the damned filter instead of having to rely on the internal factory filter [which is still there, but now I just change out the external filter so the internal filer "should" stay clean.].

Also, again speaking of the stupid factory cooler can. The factory setup has an aluminum valve setup that uses engine coolant to cool the trans fluid. This is stupid as it usually fails, and then you get antifreeze mixed in with the trans fluid, which kills the transmission.

Also, there is a tiny thermostat inside that coolant valve, almost exactly like the heater thermostat in the engine. Guess what happens if this thing fails? Yep, just like your engine thermostat, if it fails there will be NO COOLING your trans fluid.

So, one has to wonder how many of these transmissions have failed due to heat [which is the NUMBER 1 killer of transmissions].

Also the TC overdrive clutch is tiny, from what I've read, and is another weak point of the transmission.

So, IMO my car won't be modded for more hp than I've already added, and the engine is modded to the gills, or just about as far as I can without boost [forged internals, higher CR, cams, valve springs, ported heads, gutted intake mani, unrestricted headers, etc.]

I would recommend anyone wanted to take the VQ engine to the max to either buy a car with a manual trans, or buy a wrecked car with a manual setup, and swap it out. I would do this myself, but my wife drives this car so a manual trans is out.

Sorry for the long post, but there just isn't that much info on upping the performance/modding the AW55-51 transmissions.

Also, one last thing I found on this transmission.

Apparently, the torque convertor lockup is controlled somewhat by the brake pedal switch.

If the brake switch goes bad, it will also take out the convertor.

The transmission blog from which this came didn't specify what they were calling the brake pedal switch, so I'm not sure if its what us old mechanics called the stoplight switch [controls the brake lights], or what.

So a look at the wiring schematic would be in order, and IF it is the stoplight switch, an inexpensive part, it might be a good idea to carry a spare in the glove box.
