Maxima GTR Prototype rear

I have always loved the GTR Prototype rear. For the production GTR, Nissan removed the twin diffuser fins and little red LED brake light:

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y97...rGTRproto1.jpg

Those items were my favorite parts. Soooooo, I tried to create a GTR Proto for our car as a lip kit, but failed. I installed my mesh and Im pleased with the way it turned out. Then , I thought, why not add the twin diffuser fins and LED under the mesh?

Here is a teaser pic taken with cell phone:
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y97.../MaximaGTR.jpg
The LED container is in place(if u look carefully) but I need to solder red LEDs together.
I should be done tonight. Opinions so far?

Ankit69 06-14-2008 03:25 PM

i dont really see it, guess ill have to wait for the big pics tonight!

Always original deus!

DeusExMaxima 06-14-2008 04:18 PM

The twin diffusers are there, but the LED lights are in a black housing and really hard to see right now. Ill probably put a red lense on it, even though I dont need to. I wont have the lights hooked up since the place I get my electronics from is closed already . . . grrrrr.

Looks good in the pics. You"ve got some skills.

That is freaking hideous... If you are going to do something close to the prototype diffuser, at least dont just stick some thin metal looking thing on the bottom of the bumper. The GT-R has a rear lip to help it flow better. The titanic rudder you put on is just so out of place. I really respect your DIY-ness and being different from other 6th gen and whatnot , but stuff like this is ricing it up.

scrui 06-14-2008 06:51 PM

sorry man, not feeling it.

Grand_hustle17 06-14-2008 07:40 PM

thats some paint job you got on the car... i personally think the prototype GTR is better... i was really looking forward for the CF looking accent under the headlights, but nice non the less, BTW nice addition

DJ2Max 06-14-2008 07:44 PM

it will help you steer the car when crossing large puddles.

nismology 06-14-2008 08:12 PM

Miss the way your car looked back in the day..

DrunkieTheBear 06-14-2008 08:28 PM

I would extend them into the rear further and not just cut them off like that, and make them a little bit smaller

NismoMax80 06-14-2008 08:58 PM

they can't be the lowest point. you gotta make them flush with something. plans to wrap around your pipes like the gtr?

otherwise i would think 4 spread out ones not as low would look better.

keep up the great work!

The Wizard 06-14-2008 09:09 PM

Really need to see a straight on shot from about 20' away to form an opinion. Your straight on shot is way too close-up.

Take the same shot sitting down too.

Domestic Violence 06-14-2008 09:37 PM

looks like a trailer hitch

blackmax07 06-14-2008 09:43 PM

i always thought your car was one of the best on this site..but i duno man, that rear end is starting to get a bit ricyyy...maybe not ricy, but a bit to busy?

DeusExMaxima 06-14-2008 09:44 PM

I think I will shorten them. That should improve the appearance. If it doesnt, its very easy to remove. By the way, I made the fins out of ABS plastic.

tigersharkdude 06-14-2008 10:23 PM

not digging the "diffuser" at all, you shouldnt have painted the mesh black:nono::nono::nono::nono:

Bjs470 06-14-2008 10:50 PM

The diffuser doesnt look too good but the mesh part isn't bad. Take the fins off and keep the mesh.

PulsarGTS 06-14-2008 11:24 PM

I liked when you first put the mesh in before it was black. But the fins don't add anything to your car at all. And the bumper looks like it could use a buff.

DeusExMaxima 06-15-2008 10:15 AM

I think I can make it look better if I make a fiberglass version of the fins and undertray. I can thicken the fins and shorten them and I think that will look better. I installed the fins as they are now to see what it would look like. I still like the idea but I think it needs some tweaking. Making it out of fiberglass and allow me to better shape the fins so they look better. In the end if it doesnt look right, I can always remove the tray and fins with 3 bolts. This is by no means permanent.

Actual pics of the undertray and fins.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y97...a/PICT1317.jpg
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y97...a/PICT1316.jpg

The tray smooths out the airflow between the spare tire area and the bumper (theoretically). Any air "caught" at the bumper is vented out through teh mesh (theoretically).

dineth00i30 06-15-2008 11:12 AM

hey I'm also a big fan of your car and I think your body and suspension work and looks plus chern's engine would be the best maxima ever but not really feeling the painted mesh grille and the diffuser.
If your car is mine I would get an 07 rear bumper and put carbon fiber vinyl over the black part near the exhaust. But that's my opinion. Can't wait to see what you will be doing next.

DeusExMaxima 06-15-2008 06:19 PM

I removed the fins and am giving it thought as to what would look best. I looked at other pics of the GTR Proto and the fins are more tucked in than I thought.

NismoMax80 06-15-2008 07:24 PM

maybe angle the edge of the fins to continue the direction of the bumper instead of straight down.

Agreed. I also cut down the underneath part. Just lookin for ideas right now.

slvrmax7 06-15-2008 08:24 PM

Hey man very nice! I love the way that looks.

chernmax 06-15-2008 08:59 PM

Dude, the rear is starting to look too busy, but I've seen your excellent work before and will weigh in once you say you're finished with this project...

scarface4522 06-15-2008 09:13 PM

Best looking. With no bottom on the diffuser it never looked right. I think the length of the fin was the throw off. Also, making them wider and more rounded like wrc diffusers would look nicer. Hey man props for you taking the time to a) make it and b) trying something new.

If I had a 6th gen I'd buy that.

DeusExMaxima 06-16-2008 03:10 PM

Ok, I took a giant step for me and started a homemade fiberglass undertray. I then plan to attach twin diffuser fins after the tray is started and if it works out. Its really messy work but it may work. I first several layers are baking in the sun to dry. Ill try to get the next layers done today after I make some fins.

Here are the supplies. The tray in this first pic was the original plastic one that I decided not to use since I re designed it based on your opinions.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y97...a/PICT1324.jpg

In the second picture, you can see it baking in the sun to dry. This is the re designed tray that will hold the fins. It will look more like the GTR Proto since it will have a thicker border under the mesh area of the bumper. The fins will be the same thickness theoretically.

Can't stop a man on a mission :D

The Wizard 06-16-2008 03:55 PM

With the newly added zoomed out pics, I don't think your original idea is all that bad. A little shorter like you said and maybe a little wider apart would be best IMO.

Although now it looks like you have a new endeavor on your hands.......

FWIW, I like the mesh painted black the best. No RED trim though, ok? :hide:

DeusExMaxima 06-16-2008 05:09 PM

I dont think ill go with red trim on the mesh. I like the mesh the way it is. .. .for now.

As far as the GTR Proto fins, I am limited in the distance between the fins by my red LED container. Ill try to get them as wide as I can. I am also making them smaller and angled frontward rather than rearward or straightdown. I determined this after more examination of the GTR Proto rear taken from different angles. It will make the fins less obtrusive and more pleasant to look at, IMHO.

Here is the tray after a bit of trimming:
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y97...a/PICT1326.jpg

I still have more layers to put on and I want to make an nice thick edge to go under the mesh grill. The edge should be the same thickness and the fins. Right now its a rough shape.

By the way, the fins are a B!tch to make. I formed them out of foam, but fiberglass is hard to do on little parts like that. I think i have to do one side at a time, trim it, and then resin the edges.

DeusExMaxima 06-18-2008 09:02 PM

Starting to look good. I used some wood to form a lip which will fit right under the rear grill. I need to glass over the wood to thicken the lip up some. Then I will blend in two diffuser fins and mold in the little red LED brake light in between
