6.5 generation shift plate mod *pics*
I have never been a huge fan of shiny silver trim. I recently had the chrome roof strips matched to body color, and it looks sick, but you will have to wait for me to finish some other mods before I will post pics of the body color match roof strips.
For now, here is a write-up on how I got rid of the chrome shift plate and **** trim.
I found the Testors gunmetal spray here and it worked out great.

Here is where I got the primer and the clear coat. The clear coat was a BUST because it reacted badly with the Testors paint. I need to find some other clear coat, but for now the bare paint is about as durable as the original finish.

Pull the **** trim strait down. Do not twist it or it will break. There is a metal clip holding the **** on. Remove it and the ****. The shift plate will pull up pretty easily.
I roughed up the surfaces with sandpaper a little more than photographed. The ABS is really durable and it is very hard to mar it even with heavy grit paper.
Even though the primer is meant for ABS, I still think it is a good idea to sand the pieces well.
One thing that is very important about the Testors gunmetal spray is to make sure you use it at room temperature. Also make sure there are no breezes or air moving around. Either can cause the paint to ripple before it dries and it looks terrible.
Easy project and it came out really nice. This would also work great on trunk and grill emblems.
I plan on doing all the chrome on the front grill with this same method, but I will have to find a better clear coat first. Any suggestions for something that will work better with the Testors spray??
