Driving/Fog light Rewire with Stalk Control ** Write Up DONE !!!!!!**

Guys, I am attempting to do Driving/Fog light rewire with stalk control. The key to this install is find the wire (negative ground) on the stalk that controls the lights. Here is the deal, the ground isn't active until the headlights are activated in returns provide the ground for the coil on the relay. The two positives on the relay are always hot. We can get past that by putting a relay on the stalk that activates ground when the driving/fog light switch on the stalk is activated. (Please beware that the lights will be on when the high beams are activated) I will be working on the stalk wire location after the Presidential Election. Here is what I have so far:

Relay Location

Next, the relay layout.

Almost forgot --> There will be a NO relay (ground as load) on the Stalk until the key is either switched to ACC or the on position. Lets work together to make this mod a Maxima.org original ...

Wait wait waittt a min, your saying you just figured out how to make the fog lights turn on without having the headlights on... with the original stalk?

Your method would require the park lights to be on in order to control the driving/fogs. The new method would allow you to use the OEM switch without having the parks on..

Here is a small outline of what has been and will be done:

1. Locate the Relay (Done)

2. Fab a 1/2 (Heat shrunk) wire extension from the relay to the original
socket (with female recept connected to the relay and male that plugs
into the original relay socket. The relay holder is soldered into the
board so you cant snip or tie a wire into the ground peg of the coil
(Done)

3. Find the two wires on the stalk that goes to/from light controller. Snip
those two wires and ground one. Connect the other to the negative
(Coil) of the relay that will be placed between the ground of the stalk
and main relay.

This is what will happen:
a. You turn the ignition on. The ground is closed going to the
main relay but not activated until you twist the stalk,
grounding the coil of the main relay which inturns
make the fogs pop on. In that moment, you will then clean
your pants after all the excitement that you will experience
for completing this project

I am soo close. If someone would like to assist by locating the two wires on the stalk, we could have this completed in no time..

For those that are worried about burning out the switch on the stalk, never fear -> the amps that pass through the stalk to the coil isnt enough to make a fly fart. You guys are probably wondering how a guy who flunked third grade four times come up with this cockamaimy idea --> I slept at a Holiday Inn last night.

Nissan Specific, I dont know, but most mini relays that i have dealt with normally draw about .5 amps on the coil. Correct me if I am wrong..

Does anyone know if there is a ground that is activated when the ignition is switched? This would totally eliminate the need for a servo on the stalk..

I'll wire mine with the parking lights tomorrow too I guess, but stalk won't work anymore. Honestly I dont really care. What I hate is having the fogs turn off when I switch high beams on.

Anyone knows which colour of wire is the+12v to the parking lights ???? There are 3 and I dont know which one to cut. (one ground, one flasher and one parking light....)

Thx

How do you wire the fogs to go on with the parking lights? The link above was for a 4th gen.

well I have an HID kit so there's already a relay, just take the +12v from parking lights to relay of the HID fogs.

For regular fogs, I dont know.

DONE Part 1 !!!

1. First, remove the three screws from underneath the steering column cover

2.Next, press the tab on the top and bottom of the stalk and pull towards the door

3.Remove the two screws from the stalk cover and lift the cover from the stalk

4. Snip the Blue and green wire (04 6th gen) and solder one wire that will reach the relay in the fuse box and another that will be grounded to the column (shown in second picture.

Done Part 2!!!

5. Next, you would stage your internal relay and attach wires as illustrated. I used a relay to only allow me to turn the fog/driving lights on while the key was switched to either the ACC or the on position due to the fact there is no alert to let you know if the lights are on if you turn the car off (drained battery)

6. Here is a picture of where the fog/driving lights relay is located in the fuse box under the hood.

I attached extensions that stretched from the relay to the relay holder. I did this because unlike the other generations, the fuse holder is soldered on the circuit board, not allowing you to tap into the wires.

just a q on your relay setup,

for the blue & green wire, it doesnt matter which one you use for ground and power, right?

just cuorious, what does the blue & green wires do?

you are using a spst relay, correct? im used to using spdt relays [even though i sometimes dont use the the 87a, but oh well]

positive to fuse coil is 85
grounded to chasis is 87
grounded to stalk is 86
wire to driving light relay is 30

iirc, when 12v is applied between 85 & 86, it closes the circuit between 30 & 87, right?

so from my understanding of your thought process is that 86 is grounded so once you turn the key to acc or on, it sends 12v to 85 from the ________ fuse thus closing the circuit bewteen 30 and 87 to turn on the fogs?

sorry if this sounds redundant, i just like to understand the logistics so i can learn!

on another note, couldnt 85 be hooked up to the same the the headlights are wired to when no key is present to work the same way? that way, itll be independent like the headlights.

but again, thanks for your time for the write up, ive been meaning to do this for a while but didnt have time to read the fsm and figure out the wiring

The blue and green wires are actually connected to the switch on the stalk. This closes the loop on the ground to the relay, which inturns activates the coil --> turning on the lights

This is also correct

YOu could in fact use your method. I chose to connect to the ACC/On fuse because I am getting old and feable. I just cant remember to turn the lights off everytime I exit the car. The original light system has dumb-proofed the possiblity of the lights draining the battery..

Buenos Suerte

the pop sound from your speakers sounds like you might have tapped the same acc for your stereo. that would create something like that. I would verify the radio acc wire and maybe go to another source for pwr to get rid of that. don't have wiring diagrams here at work so I will try and check later. Nice write up though will be doing this one because for the most part it sounds free and I like free mods.
