Car Won't Start

I tried to start my 2004 Maxima this morning and it wouldn't start. The headlights, gauges, and stereo all came on. It made a series of fast paced clicking noises and the interior lights flickered. It was cold outside (4 degrees F), but my car is parked in the garage. Anyone have any ideas? I just took my other car to work but will look at it further tonight.

mwh Jan 15, 2009 05:23 AM

sounds like a weak battery

VigilanteMax Jan 15, 2009 05:29 AM

Definitely the battery

Hilbe Jan 15, 2009 05:50 AM

I am guessing this is what I get from only driving it 1 or 2 times per week. Now I've got to find a cheap charger or jump it tonight.

Eric-Holmes Jan 15, 2009 06:10 AM

+1 for the battery. My old Camry does that noise.

youhave this, like mine did lol
time for a new battery

Machinist Jan 15, 2009 07:51 AM

Weak battery, cold weather kills a weak/old battery, oem batteries only last at the most about 5 years, but first check for loose or corrosion at the terminals

BigPete Jan 15, 2009 08:31 AM

optima.

I VIK I Jan 15, 2009 10:12 AM

Mine died like 2 years ago. I went optima and never looked back. Nice CCA's. Nowadays since im off from school I drive once a week. and my car just sits there but it cranks nice everytime.

vir420 Jan 15, 2009 10:15 AM

I just got back to the states after 3 weeks last night and tried turning my car on but it wouldn't start. Lights were very dim and alarm sound was very dull as well. Live in Pennsylvania so it's cold out here and car wasn't started for three weeks, so i'm assuming time for a new battery? Optima the way to go?

po8pimp Jan 15, 2009 10:22 AM

Yellow top here. There are alot of different opinions on what battery is the best, use what you think is right for your application and pocketbook.

Lovemycar Jan 15, 2009 12:49 PM

Battery for sure

Red top here. If you dont got alota A/V stuff go redtop. I have 1 sub but So far its been a year. Works great everytime.

Hilbe Jan 15, 2009 02:05 PM

I have the battery on a charger. I have had the battery around a year and got it from Batteries Plus. I charged it for a few hours and got anxious. It ALMOST turned over. I'll let it hit the "full charge" light this time. Fingers crossed.

hey11101 Jan 15, 2009 03:06 PM

Try getting the optima battery they last a lot longer.

Feldman Jan 15, 2009 03:28 PM

oem battery FTL

Hilbe Jan 15, 2009 07:35 PM

Well. The car started after charging the battery. Do you guys think its just a bad battery? I only have driven it a couple times in the last few weeks (maybe 50 miles), so maybe the clock, cd changer, etc. just draining it in that time frame? I am just trying to decide if I should take the battery back to Batteries Plus since its not that old.

Don't stress so much, Its just the battery.

jsmithsole Jan 15, 2009 08:09 PM

I just had the same exact problem last week. I had a Redtop and it was toast. And to be honest I never found any real advantage to the Optima. I got a Duralast and everything is running way better, stereo doesn't cut off, windows roll up faster, car starts better...

zuko Jan 15, 2009 11:38 PM

optimas are trash

ramberg Jan 16, 2009 01:30 AM

My red top only lasted 2 years.

If the battery is as new as you said, I'd take it back. Most battereries have a 1 year full replacement warrenty. DOn't tell them it sat fior 3 weeks. For guys that need a new batteries I've heard both good and bad for Ultima's, but have since heard they are not as good now that they are made out of the country.

Belive it or not Consumer Reports rates the MAXX batteries from Walmart as the 2nd best after Interstate. They run about $70 and have a 3 year full replacemnet and then a 7 or 9 year prorated warrenty. If you have tons of A/V accessories I'm not sure how you should go, but for normal stuff I think the MAXX is the way to go.

Lovemycar Jan 16, 2009 05:26 AM

WOW i still have my OME battery and i have an 04 with 42K that's in my garage most of the winter

fixerupper10 Jan 16, 2009 06:13 AM

ya i definatly go with a maxx battery from walmart. Gotta love the 3 year warranty on it :D

BadBlackMaxSL Jan 16, 2009 08:43 AM

I replaced my OEM battery with the Duralast Gold with 750 CCA and never had a problem. When I went to get my replacement for my OEM I was gonna get the Optima but the salesguy said they were junk and for half the price I could have a battery that is twice as good and with a better warranty. It may not be as "pretty" as the Optima but its function is great. The Max started right up today in my garage with the heater set to on, the heated seats set to on, the radio on and the auto hid headlights on and it was -12F outside. Not bad for a battery that was less than $100.

VigilanteMax Jan 16, 2009 08:52 AM

I have a red top and the big reason was that I hated the corrosion that occurred on the lead acid battery. Ate my battery tie down. runs pretty well so far, but time will tell.

mtalley82 Jan 16, 2009 10:07 AM

OEM battery here with 39k on the clock, sits outside and it was -10 last night and this morning. Starts up perfect.

BigPete Jan 16, 2009 10:26 AM

red or yellow top optima. Ive had both, they both work great and have a nice life span.

-Sin- Jan 16, 2009 10:37 AM

I used a sears Diehard Truck SUV battery... I think it was 875CCA

one5ikmax Jan 16, 2009 11:15 AM

same thing happen to me. time for a new battery?

NismoMax80 Jan 16, 2009 11:32 AM

My battery has done it after using the battery while engine is off in the cold. almost 5 years so I just won't use it like that. Should clean the corrosion that returned. Once it starts to act up Interstate will be my next battery. served me well on my old beater. for the price, 7 year warranty, and 800 CCA what would be better?

Hilbe Jan 17, 2009 04:27 PM

Well, after I charged it up the thing is as good as new. I took it in for a free battery test at Batteries Plus and the guy acted like I was crazy. "This is the best battery I've tested all day." It does start OK and my AVIC-D3 display was reporting like 14.2V to 14.7V at all times. I think just comes from me not driving it much in the winter since I use the Murano to get around in the snow. Thanks to all that helped.
