Melted/Burnt Air Filter!!!?!?!?

So today i decided to change my fujita air filter as it has been abt a year since i had it. When i removed it i noticed the Hydroshield was burnt & now had a hole... i looked @ the filter & saw it was burnt & melted. WTF!!...
anyone ever experience this or kno what would cause this? Here are some pics!!! BTW i replaced it w/ a spectre air filter...0n a brighter note -- it still sounds like a beast!!!!

do you have the inner fender well in place? is the tire rubbing against it?

Deff looks like something was rubbing? Possibly touching only when you hit bumps in the road and eventually it wore the filter out. check spacing.

...not to mention hes on coilovers..probably rubbing the filter on these nasty queens streets.

lol.. the fender is on well... the wheels arent next to it... the bottom plastic covering that covers the bottom of the car is pretty close to the bottom of the filter but thats just plastic...the filter is never exposed to the streets

Hydroshield doesn't come with it. Its the black meshy material in the last 2 pics. It goes over the filter & protects it from water getting into the filter & into the pipe & engine ... perfect for when it rains. Without it, if you go into a big puddle & the filter sucks in the water ... the car can hydrolock... shut off due to water in the engine tranny & not sure where else it'll go...

It had to rub against something, no other way.

Damn,

tunafish51 08-04-2009 07:34 AM

It clearly rubbed man, Ya can see the scuff mark or the filter and matching hole on the hydroshield.... What makes you think it burned? There are no burn marks...

This is strictly an install issue. The filter sits right on the fender or the well cover or something and when you hit the gas or get off the gas the filter rubs. Simple. The movement of the engine during acceleration and deceleration makes a back and forth motion of the engine and since the intake is one stiff piece it just moves as the engine does. When reinstalling line up the filter as far away from everything as possible...
