Removing tint...How much? Should I do it myself?

The person who tinted my window put 35 on the doors and 20 in the back. I don't like the look of this. Plus, the jacka$$ cut the tint around my 3rd brakelight as opposed to tinting beneath it. I know, I am the jacka$$ as I should have had him redo it at that time. He is now out of business and so I am in search of someone to remove just the back window tint and reapply it in 35. I called one place and they were going to charge $110 to peel and reapply the back window. Is this reasonable? Has anyone removed the tint themselves?

STARR 08-29-2009 06:15 AM

buy a clothes steamer and do it yourself, comes off like a hot mess but at least u don't have to worry about weird chemicals on/in ur car

Ryaliu 08-29-2009 06:46 AM

the back will be hard because of the defrost. you might want to get use a soap and water solution and peel the film off. then use a razor blade to get all the gunk off

memphisballer 08-29-2009 07:59 AM

Im in the same boat.I have 15% all the way around and after 2 yrs the tint is starting to turn purple but thats my fault for using a no name shop.

Propa Teknique 08-29-2009 09:04 AM

I don't think I'll do that myself being I'm so impatient. I need to get my tint changed from my puppy biting the rear windows. they quoted me 160 though so if they are charging 110 then maybe I should look for a better deal.

Stormzusmc 08-29-2009 09:06 AM

yeah its easy doesnt take long - soapy water, windex, hair dryer = good to go

04CleanMaxx 08-29-2009 09:49 AM

$110 is reasonable. Pay for them to do it. Not only is it the biggest HASSEL EVER to get the tint off, if you dont do a good enough job, when they retint it will look awful. I did the EXACT same thing on my car and was quoted 100-150 by the people who cut around my brake light in the first place...

Im gonna do it but I dunno if I wanna go 35 on the back window. I have 35 on all 4 doors and 5 on the back. I think 35 on the back will barely even look tinted. If you do this soon - TAKE PICS.

eminemdpc 08-29-2009 10:24 AM

Too bad you guys don't live near me. qualitywindowtints.com did mine. And the guy likes my sister so he hooks me and my buddies up. I asked him how much to take off the front tints and re apply a darker shade. He told me $50.00

maxima365 08-29-2009 10:29 AM

i say if your comfortable with it then do it yourself and save some money.

:sprint:

I used a razor and some soap and water on my uncles van. Just be decently careful around the rear window defrost

ddelaud 08-30-2009 10:51 AM

i wouldnt do it. if you do decide to, be VERY VERY careful with your razor around the defrost. when i had my first car, being young, dumb and impatient, i ruined the defrost.

BOOTZ 08-30-2009 03:28 PM

not hard to do. like said before... windex or soapy water and a razor. Just be careful with defrost

A5703 08-30-2009 04:29 PM

I have decided not to try it. I am going to pay up and have someone do it right.

Domestic Violence 08-30-2009 04:47 PM

is it possible for the shop to simply add a strip where the brake light is?

thats an option instead of removing the entire job

CALYMAN 08-31-2009 08:20 AM

I had tints in all 4 doors but I had to remove it since I got pull over by fu**** NJ cops and I used the Orange oil spray that usually pepboys sell . That spay romoves all of it. Just spray it as you are romoving it and eventually all comes off. Eventought I am thinking that I am going to tint them again and F*** the cops.

08WHTMax 08-31-2009 05:41 PM

get a stainless steel blade to remove the side windows because that wont scratch ur glass. Start in the middle and work your way out try to cut into it at a angle and get big pieces. And sweat the tint off the back glass. Put a garbbage on the outside of the back glass and spray the inside where the tint is with some simple pink or a amonia based solution cover that with another garbbage bag on the inside and put it in the sun for a couple of hours and it all should come out with little mess. I tint homie:laugh:

ButtaMax 08-31-2009 08:09 PM

the sides are EZ PEEZY, as stated alil soap, water, & razor - your good!

the rear JUST LET THE PROS DO IT!!!!

jttint1 11-14-2009 09:40 AM

dont try this at home!

DO NOT remove it yourself!DO NOT put a razor to the back glass!you will DEFINETLY cut a defrost line.i've been tinting for over 20yrs.best way,if your going to do it yourself,is to steam it.if you dont have a steamer then peal the film off the window, get soapy solution or windex then get super fine stealwool and scrub!any questions call me 9176864733

BadBlackMaxSL 11-14-2009 06:22 PM

Pay the money and get it done right and you are not exposing yourself to f'ing up your rear defrost.

Matt93SE 11-16-2009 06:56 PM

Pay a pro. After you spend two afternoons trying to remove the rear tint and you still mess up the defroster, you'll wish you'd have just paid the money for someone else to do it. been there, done that.

drthug2145 11-17-2009 08:00 AM

don't do it your self bro gonna end up purple lol.. let a pro do and research them ask to see other tint they have done see how it looks... and remove the tine yourself gonna save u alot of money

arcueda 11-17-2009 08:56 AM

tintoff-autozone-diy
pay a pro to re-apply

Matt93SE 11-17-2009 09:47 AM

All of you saying to do it yourselves.. Have you actually removed the rear window tint yourself and had a working defroster when it was done?

floebrian 11-20-2009 04:39 PM

pay the money. it will be worth it. you really dont wanna screw up your defroster. ive been tinting for 22 yrs

04BlackMaxx 11-30-2009 10:16 AM

I did it myself before, i think id pass on attempting it again. Getting the film off is a snap but getting ALL the balled up little pieces of glue is a nightmare.

i didnt do the rear.
