Eibach springs too low in the rear causing tire rub
 

hey guys, i have a problem and need some advice. Way back when i bought my car the previous owner already have Eibach lowering springs and 20inch wheels/tires. i just noticed that the left rear tire on the 20's is severely messed up, on the inner lip of the tire, it has a 1/2" groove ground into it. I can't believe this has been happening and i didn't notice. i rotate my tires every 10k and never noticed this before. Anyways i don't know if this has been happening for the past two years and i'm just now noticing or if it just started. The tire is completely trashed, it has a huge "crease" in it now about a 1/2" deep where it was rubbing on something inside the wheel well. I wish i would have taken pictures of it before getting rid of the tires but i didn't.

What are my options here? Could i have a bad rear strut? When i'm driving i can't hear any rubbing or feel anything out of the ordinary. I can't afford to ruin another set of tires, not to mention how dangerous it is since it caused a huge crease to be worn into the tire.

I'm wondering, since i don't feel i have a bad strut at only 60k miles on the odometer, could i just install a set of factory rear springs but leave the front ones alone? The back sits lower than the front anyways so it probably would look normal raising the back up an inch or two.

anyone ever had this problem before?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but mixing springs is not a good idea.

Roll the rear fenders

If I under stand you correctly this is appearing on the inside of the rear tire. not the outside facing the fender? Is that correct. I would first look to see if you have anything near the tire once it is mounted and on the ground. Maybe angle a camera under the car if on the ground or if on a lift sitting on the tires you may be able to see it better. Check that first. Rolling the rear fender will only help if this is on the outside of the tire. Have you seen any issue with the new tires yet?

thanks for the quick reply. you are correctly reading my post, it is the inside of the tire, closest to the strut. The new tires are VERY new, i just put them on last night so i didn't notice anything when i checked them this morning. Good idea checking for obstructions or anything, but i can't imagine what it could be, unless they are hitting the strut itself.

same thing happened to my 22's. i blame it on camber

My brother had some 20's and his did the same due to camber as well. We never found anything actually touching the tire. What size tire was on it and did you go the same route?

tire size is 245/35-20 for both the old tires and the new

I guess if the tire place said that was right then that is what you go with. I honestly don't recall which size my brother was using. I can ask him to see if he remembers though.

Try replacing the rear shocks. My guess is one is bad.

Could of been a bad tire. I had same exact thing on stock tires and a buddy told me one of the steel cords on the inside snapped. 1/4" groove all the way around the inside part of the tire. Unless you actually saw the marks from contact with something.

Hi Guys, I'm sorry if it is a little off the topic but I have a question and I have no one who can help me. I Have Nissan Maxima 97, 16" Rims(standart), I want to buy some cool 18" Rims but I am afraid that they will not fit because I got stock struts, so the cap that holds spring from the bottom might be the problem to put bigger Rims.
Can anyone tell me what can I do with that, do I have to change my front shocks or the rims will fit with the tires alright, oh and by the way I'm planing to put 235/40/R18 Tires.
