05 SE Won't Start

My 05 Max is acting weirdly. It won't start, acts like a problem with the battery connection. Lights, headlight and dash, come on but when the switch is moved to start nothing happens. All the lights go out and small continuous ticking sound comes from behind the dash (sounds like it anyway).

Turning the switch off may or may not bring back the lights. Acting like a battery connection issue, but registering 12.49 volts at the battery and beyond the posts. At one time, after attempting to start the car the dash lights just flickered as if there was a short. Other times, only the airbag and seatbelt light remained lit.

Any ideas what this may be? I've seen some posts about coins in the A/C control amp, but I honestly don't think that's the problem. I've had the car 4 years and haven't put any coins up there.

Thanks for the help.

I'll put good money on it either being your battery is dead, or you have a loose connection....

Does it read 12.49 volts while you put a load on it? EG cranking?

Good question. I haven't been able to try it under load because everything is dead right now; however, it is a brand new battery, but I know that doesn't mean it can't be bad. There isn't any variation in the voltage reading. I'm thinking bad connection somewhere, just not sure where.

Thanks for the response

OK, I trusted too much. Put a jump on it and it started. What I don't understand that even if there wasn't enough in the battery to start, it wouldn't even crank it or operate any of the lights even though it showed the 12.49 volts.

Thanks again for sharing your thoughts because they caused me to go put the jump on it.

just replaced my battery it showed 12 volts but just 8 volts when under a load

Check all of your ground connections. Check all the fuses.

For now, it appears it was the new battery. AutoZone charged it, put it back in and nothing!
They replaced it and everything is OK for now.

Thanks

Hi gentlemen, (and ladies). sorry but i can't start a new thread yet so i'm going to try to add to this discussion if you don't mind.
I have a 2005 maxima that won't start for me. I'll give you the full background i guess...
shortly after i purchased it in early november it stalled out on me once and i couldnt get it started again.. i had it towed and the mechanic's best efforts said he thought it was likely the fuel pump. I passed on having him change it at the time as it was extremely intermittent. it stalled that once, then he had it idle for several hours and couldn't get it to stall out again... I drove the car problem free until last week (2 months). I actually had chalked that one up to bad gas.
Anyway.. here we are, i hoped in after work last thursday and it wouldn't start, fuel pump wouldn't prime. After pushing and pulling some wires on the IPDM and pump connector itself i did get it started, drove home, drove to the grocery store.. next morning nothing again.
This is where i am:
- fuse is good,
- fuel pump relay is good
- if i put a 12V supply directly to the pump pins it fires up immediately.
- i'm working on checking all the circuits involved
I have two questions..
1. anyone know where the "condenser-1" connecter is as my diagnostics procedeure is telling me to check it next..
2. What happens if the car is not reading my key properly? does the NVIS allow the starter to turn the engine over and just not supply fuel or what would i see if my key was not registering the NVIS correctly?

appreciate any help.
Naf

The security light would stay on during the starting process.

And yes the car would crank, crank, crank away! but with no fuel!
