Transmission problem

Alright guys one of my friends car recently wouldn't get into gear at all... it's a manual transmission, when i took the cables off the trans and tried to shift the trans by hand it would go in, but when i connect it back together the shifter locks up and wouldn't move at all. i was wondering if anyone has had a problem like this before and i would appreciate any opinions.

Does it go into gear when the car is off? sounds like a clutch problem to me.

It doesnt go in at all even when the car is off

Does the shifter at least move left to right?
If not, its some kind of internal failure.

its the clutch

The shifter wouldn't move left to right at all. its not the clutch because i can still get the trans into gear and drive it. the shifter just wouldn't move.
