Transmission killing engine?

My transmission went out and now I can’t get the car to crank. Will the computer not let the engine turn over to protect itself? Thanks for any insight.
The transmission shop says I need to get it to start before they can work on it.
’06 Maxima My husband was driving it, stopped at a stop light and when he tried to take off it wouldn’t go into gear. It had been having trouble going into 3rd gear for awhile. Then the car shut off and hasn’t wanted to turn over since. It keeps draining the battery as well.

is the check engine light on? if it is jump start it and check for codes do not disconnect the battery until ya check codes

Too late. The battery was so dead after it sat I didn’t think about pulling the codes off first. I took the battery to get it charged only to find out the battery was done. Had to get a new one. Now I’m afraid the transmission shop is not going to be able to pull a code. And on top of that even with the new battery the car won’t turn over. The more I crank it the less it wants to turn over. I just don’t understand how we went from the car won’t go into first gear to now the car won’t start!

if ya were in texas I could check it out. im a tech at a local shop but I would really have to see it first could be anything from crank sensor to timing chain to blown engine

The shop says the alternator was bad. Makes sense. But it wasn’t showing any signs before the transmission went out. Guess we shall see.

That would explain as to why the battery kept dying as far as the starting issue may be a bad crank position sensor
