04 Max won't start after tranny rebuild and clutch/flywheel replacement.

Hello everyone!
I'm having this same issue with my 04 6mt. I pulled out my tranny for a rebuild, after my input shaft bearing got trashed and gear oil spilled all over. I installed new flywheel, clutch and pressure plate (luk) and put tranny back in. Now it won't start. I didn't sand the matting surfaces and going by what some have posted I added (3) 2awg grounds. 2 to the bell housing and 1 to the intake manifold, but it didn't help. I also changed the battery because it was cranking a bit slow and also didn't help. The crank position sensor is new and I only get a code if I cranck it with it disconnected, but I tried also with the old and same thing. The only code I'm getting is p0340 which was already pending before starting this repair. Could this be the issue? I checked the fuel pump and it's also working. Also nothing got pinched on install. The car was sitting for about a month and a half while I got the transmission done and waiting for parts to arrive from overseas. The only thing is that only 3 times it has made a fake attempt like its going to start, but nothing. Could something gotten damaged from the car sitting that long? Any pointers? Please help!!! Thanks in advance!

HELLO AGAIN! I just replaced the rear camshaft position sensor and the code is gone but still no start. It makes a fake attempt like every 4 attempts. Could the engine be folded after all the attempts? I also move the ground wires around to see if it helped, but nothing. I got the original one at the starter, one on an intake screw, one at the top screw on the bell housing and the last one on the top of the timing cover. Anyone please help!

So it cranks like a champ but won't fire?

Exactly! Just a couple of fake attempts but that's it.

User1 Jun 20, 2020 06:17 PM

Define "fake attempt".

How are you pulling codes?

NATS is functioning properly?

As far as I can tell yes! Light blinks normal and once I put the key in and flip the switch it turns off as it always has!

Ignition condenser?

Sorry for my ignorance! What's an ignition condenser? Coil pack?

Download the Engine Control section (or the entire FSM, it's nice to have, and free) and follow the work flow for the condenser.

Thanks for that! Ithatgo through it and see if that's the problem. I'll post and update and let you know the outcome! Just one question! Could it gone bad just from having the car sitting while I did the tranny work?

User1 Jun 20, 2020 06:47 PM

It could have gone bad for a number of reasons. I have no idea. I'm not saying definitively whether or not it's the problem either. I think you could still have an issue with the crank sensor. I'd still be playing with that/swapping it out with the old one. The sensors can be tested as well, the procedure is in the EC section of the FSM.

Ok, I'll check that out also and reply back! Thanks for your help and for responding!

You bet. 6th gen forum gets no love, so I stop by once in a while and do the best I can.

I use Adobe to open the FSM, then I use "Ctrl-F" to search the document.

Thanks for that, much appreciated! No love for 6th gens! 🤣

Very little activity here compared to 4, 5, 7gen. It really was the forgotten generation! Blame Renault!

Yeah! Mitsubishi Renault and Nissan "alliance "

gamaliel2612 Jun 21, 2020 03:11 PM

Quick update! I checked the ignition condenser and it tested good. So I tightened everything every plug again and decide to disconnect the crank position sensor and cranked it, after a couple of times it started but not smooth and it threw a p0335 for the cps. The funny thing is that I plugged it back in while it was on and as soon as I cleared the code the engine shut off and it won't start again until I remove the plug for the cps again. Could it be a timing issue?

User1 Jun 21, 2020 07:37 PM

Yeah. you ****\ed up your flywheel.

It's that arrow right? That points where the dowel pin is at?

You know I'm really not sure. Mine is auto but was easy to line up. Hopefully someone with a manual can confirm.

User1 Jun 22, 2020 02:03 PM

The FSM will have that info.

I'll take a look at that then, thanks!

User1 Jun 22, 2020 03:57 PM

But that arrow makes perfect sense. Is that where it was lined up before?

By before you mean the original? If that, I'm not really sure, it took me so long to put the tanny back together that I forgotwhere everything was supposed to be. But Im here right now and about to pull it out, we'll see shortly! But the FSM only mentions the dowel pin not the arrow though!

There will probably be a detent on the backside of the flywheel were the dowel pin inserts.

Mannnn just pulled it out and the dowel pin was in the correct place, but the timing ring on the flyweel is bent and I don't know if its from shipping or me prying it out now. But anyway it don't matter now right? If I straighten this one and put it in it might not work or be unbalanced right?

User1 Jun 22, 2020 05:04 PM

How bad is it? It needs to be straight. It does matter.

User1 Jun 22, 2020 05:11 PM

Hmmm I don't know man. I would do the best I could to get it as straight as possible. Can you try running the engine without the tranny attached?

The starter hooks up to the bell housing can't crank it without the transmission on.

gamaliel2612 Jun 22, 2020 05:16 PM

I'll buy it again from rockauto and send this one back as defective I guess.

User1 Jun 22, 2020 05:20 PM

Right, wow, I feel retarded. And I've done a 7th gen engine swap lol
