iPhone doesn't pair every time???

Hey everyone,

My first post!

I picked up an '09 Maxima and absolutely love it! I have an iPhone 4 and set everything up to pair via bluetooth to the car... however it doesn't pair every single time I get in the car.

When it does not pair, as soon as I click on the "Setting" app on my phone, it pairs right away. Kind of annoying having to look out for it every time.

Any thoughts/fixes/suggestions?

Thanks!

is your bluetooth connectivity always on with the iphone...i have no issues at all with my galaxy s connects everytime

gofastgt May 10, 2012 01:43 PM

Yup, and I would say about 80-90% of the time it works perfectly. Sometimes it just doesn't see it.

Anyone else experience this?

Jam_Roc May 10, 2012 02:10 PM

Not with an iphone but yes it happens.

09Maxima_Sam May 11, 2012 04:07 AM

I have the same exact issue with my 2009 and IPhone 4. I do the same thing, head to the settings app.

gofastgt May 11, 2012 06:42 AM

Isn't it weird?! I'm trying to find a pattern but it just seems random.

PSU09MAXIMA May 11, 2012 07:08 AM

are you guys up to date with the latest iOS for the iPhone also are you jailbroken?

gofastgt May 11, 2012 08:54 AM

I am up to date. Actually just got another update a day or 2 ago. I'm running 5.1.1 right now.

Mine is not jailbroken, just plain old phone.

Yeah then you are up to date got that update as well like 2 days ago... Have you ever had the BT issue with anything else?

gofastgt May 11, 2012 09:12 AM

No I haven't, it pairs to my headset with no problems as soon as I turn it on. Haven't had a car with the BT before so can't compare there.

Bummer!

PSU09MAXIMA May 11, 2012 09:14 AM

Do you ever reset it... Holding down the home button along with the standby button on top?

gofastgt May 11, 2012 09:15 AM

Every night :)

Great thoughts, I really appreciate the help brainstorming!

PSU09MAXIMA May 11, 2012 10:05 AM

One other thing do you just leave your BT on all the time? I only turn the BT on when I am going to be using it and then I turn it off

gofastgt May 11, 2012 11:46 AM

Are you asking about my BT headset, or the BT feature on the phone? I don't keep my headset on (it's actually at home) and I do keep the feature on on my phone. I tried switching it off and on as well but it still acts funny.

Yep no pattern, just random.

Did anyone ever get this figured out??? My iPhone 4 doesn't pair hardly ever unless I go into the settings app. I'm running iOS 6.0.1 and have a 2009 Maxima with the Nav system.

I think it's the version of Bluetooth protocol that the 4 supports. I upgraded to the iPhone 5 and it pairs with my 2009 everytime no matter what.

gofastgt Jan 22, 2013 04:53 PM

Hey Jake. This is the OP. I never figured it out. I also have the 09 Max with the Nav, and am also using an iPhone 4 with 6.0.1. After I got the latest update to 6.0.1, not only do I have to hit Settings, I actually have to click on Settings, and then click on Bluetooth! It's so annoying! In May I upgrade to the iPhone 5 and if that doesn't fix it, I'm getting a new car! LOL I love technology... until it sucks...

Even before my iphone 4, I had a HTC tilt that also had this issue. Both the tilt and the iPhone 4 have Bluetooth protocol of 2.1 or lower. The iphone 5 supports protocol of 4.0. But the issues with the 2009 Maxima lie in the phone itself. If I were still in your boat, i would go with the IPhone 5 or more.

But as you can see from this article, there were known issues with the Bluetooth implementation in the iPhone 4.

Good to know. I'm looking forward to the iPhone 5 even more now. ...and the new gen Maxima, whenever it's going to come out. That should solve the problem :p

Wanna trade phones?

JakeOfAllTrades Jan 22, 2013 09:08 PM

I'm going into the dealership to have a backup key programmed on Friday. I mentioned the issue and they said they would look into it and see if there are any firmware updates for the Nav unit or anything. I'll post again after.

Just out of curiosity... How are you iPhone 5ers connecting your phone to play music in the 2009 Maxima? Right now I have a little adapter that changes the connector from the 'old style' that is used by the maxima to the style used by the iPhone 4(to allow me to charge my phone while listening to music). If I get the iPhone 5 will I have to get another adapter that plugs into the adapter I already have on there??? or do they make adapters that convert the cable that comes out of the car straight to the new iPhone 5 connector?

MaxSport9 Jan 23, 2013 06:51 AM

It should be a standard 30pin to lightning adapter that plugs into the one used by the maxima. http://www.ebay.com/itm/8-Pin-to-30-...item19d82955a2 These can also be purchased at the apple store/electronics big boxes for quite a bit more.

Do you use your current adapter that connects to the one used by the maxima just to add charging capability to your iphone 4? Can you describe this adapter or post a link to what it looks like on ebay?

RoyalOasis Jan 24, 2013 04:59 AM

How do you pair the phone? I have an iPhone 4S and a 2012 SV w/ Prem and NO Tech. I can't get the phone to recognize the car even in the setting menu under Bluetooth. Tried to press and hold cars talk button and I hit it again and it says no phones available but my phone is discoverable.

MaxSport9 Jan 24, 2013 05:59 AM

Did you go through the pairing process by pressing the call answer button once on the steering wheel?

RoyalOasis Jan 24, 2013 07:42 AM

Thanks. I was holding the button too long. Worked.

Yes, I used the adapter to add charging capability for my iPhone 4.

There are other products out there like this, but I LOVE this one. It fits really snugly, and "locks" onto the Max cable but disconnects easily(but not too easily) from the iPhone. Charges my iPhone 4 via the Max cable and I don't even have to take it out of it's case.

An update about pairing:

I took my Max into the dealership to have a backup key programmed today and asked if there was a firmware update or anything else that might fix my problem. All my firmware was up to date. I was about to give up but figured I'd give one more thing a try. I think I fixed my problem (phone wouldn't connect unless I went into bluetooth settings menu on my phone every time I started my car).

Here's what I did:

  1. Connected my iPhone to my computer via usb cable.
  2. Made sure my iTunes and iOS were up to date.
  3. Backed up my phone using the "Back up now" button in the "Manual back up and restore" section. (not sure if this was necessary, I think it might do it again automatically in the next section, better safe than sorry though I guess).
  4. Clicked "restore iPhone..." (located up top under where it tells you what version of iOS you have). This will reinstall your base operating system and then will set all your settings back and reinstall all your apps, pics, texts, ect.
  5. I went into bluetooth and selected "forget this device" for "My Car".
  6. Went into the settings menu in my car(left phones bluetooth off for this part, not sure if it matters) and clicked "forget this device" for my phone.
  7. Turned bluetooth back on on my phone and "re-paired" my car and iPhone.
Everything seems to be working great after doing this. Hope it helps!
