What oil, filters and intervals are you using?

My last car I was successfully using Pennzoil Platinum and was wondering if I could use that on my new (to me) 2010 Max.

After searching I have now been confused with all this Ester talk. Should I be using a blended oil or an ester? What are you guys doing?

Which brand filter does do we like? I read the Nissan filter has something in it that is beneficial but can't remember what it was...

Lastly, what kind of changing intervals are you using?

Thanks!

xbrxlunch 09-11-2013 09:04 AM

Just don't buy a FRAM filter. I use Mobil1 full synthetic.

mlowe 09-11-2013 09:11 AM

Pennzoil Platinum and Wix filter. Wix filters are hard to beat

JD-MAX 09-11-2013 09:28 AM

Thanks fellas, glad to hear we don't have to stick with esters or Nissan's Genuine Ester oil!

I'll have to try out Wix for their oil filters, I've used their cabin and air filters before and were priced nice too.

Mobil 1 5w30, wix or mobil1 filter, 5,000 mile interval. Actually, probably closer to 6,000 miles. The car reminder starts to go off after 5,000, then it takes me another thousand miles before I quit being lazy and actually crawl under there to change it. Haha

Same ...

even the lazy part ;)

JD-MAX 09-11-2013 11:11 AM

I think this will be my new routine as well! even the lazy part lol

JD-MAX 09-11-2013 11:11 AM

BTW, does anyone know a good place to order the wix filters online? I may bulk order some.

I found Wix part# 51358 on RockAuto for $8

shook187 09-11-2013 11:51 AM

I have 4 free oil changes that I'll use up before I'll switch over to full synthetic.

Not sure of the Maxima's part number, but I picked them up for my Supra routinely at the local parts store, O'Reilleys I think, for about $6 or so. save on shipping and no wait

I leased my Max, so I use dino juice. I follow the recommendations in the manual in terms of regular maintenance intervals.
You do not have to use esther oil or synthetic oil, though some have said the stealerships are trying to pressure people into it, primarily because it is way more expensive. If you own the car, I suppose you might see some benefit using synthetic or blend, but my car is going back to the dealer when my lease is up, so I don't want to spend two to three times as much on oil changes.

13Maximasv 09-11-2013 04:08 PM

For $19.99 at the dealer they can do it.

I drive about 6k per year and will follow the maint schedule, 3750, etc

esco115 09-11-2013 04:16 PM

I for one use the following:

Mobil1 Full Synthetic
K&N Oil Filter
Changed every 3500 miles

wtgkb8 09-11-2013 04:41 PM

Castrol Edge Full Synthetic 5w-30
Wix Oil filter 51358 (Buy them off Amazon.com for $7-9 each...no tax...free two-day shipping)

First two oil changes were 3750 miles. Now working on the 7500 mile interval from now on. However...may have to change according to time vs. miles as it's been over 6 months and only driven 4500 miles.

Used the same oil/filter with my 2007...but with a 5500-7500 mile interval. every 3-6 months. Worked well up until I traded it at 88k miles.

I read in one post Fram filters are not recommended. I was wondering why ?

I've been using the Fram Extended Guard (#XG6607) for the last few oil changes with Mobil 1 5w30 synthetic oil, and I have not had any issues.

Richard66 09-12-2013 07:21 AM

The dealership does my oil changes for free, five times every 5000 miles. Along with that they rotate the tires, and do a 30 point inspection. Dealership uses Castrol Syntec Blend 5/30. After the frebees are done, and if I feel like crawling under the car I will use Mobile One full synthetic with a Nissan oil filter.

the Fram review starts around 9:30 of the video. Really cheap quality. cardboard end pieces, a crappy bypass valve and a lot less filter media compared to other similarly priced filters. Not the best choice IMO

silberma 09-12-2013 08:20 AM

I personally think that the Nissan oil change interval are too short. My Buick has an engine oil monitor and I can go 8000 miles between changes. My son's BMW 535i with turbo chargers requires an oil change only once a year on synthetic oil. If Nissan had the nerve to put an engine oil monitor in their cars the deals would lose business. Once my warranty is over I am switching to 6000-7000 miles between oil changes.

PS don't let the look of black oil on the dip stick fool you. It is normal oxidation and is not an indication of oil life.

JD-MAX 09-12-2013 09:27 AM

Thanks for all the info!

My last car I rotated my tires every 5,000 when I changed my oil but I'm thinking I may be able to get away with rotating them like the manual suggests at 7,500.

As far as the oil, the manual is kind of confusing with the Maintenance Schedule 1 & 2. I do mostly highway driving but of course there are some stop and go with traffic so I feel like I could do the schedule 2 and change every 7500 but that seems like quite a bit of time to wait. I think I'll shoot for about 5-6,000 miles.

I also us Fram filters (Tough Guard) and have never had any issues.
You need to remember people post a lot crap based on personal opinions. I'm not aware of any actual testing to prove Fram has an inferior product.

Fram actually does a lot of testing to prove the opposite.

I use Redline Oil and Nissan filter. Change the oil somewhere between 8,000 to 10,000 miles. I drive a mix of highway and suburban driving. Been doing this for a number of years on a number of different vehicles such as Audi TT, Lexus ES300, Toyota Landcruiser, etc. Never had an engine/oil problem. Redline is pricey ($10.00/qt) but, like I mentioned, am completely satisfied with it.

seesole 09-12-2013 11:20 AM

I use mobil 1 oil and filter every 8,000 miles

Where is the personal opinion interjected? It looks like fact that Fram uses cardboard for their end caps, have smaller input ports and the filter media has a lot less surface area than their competitors. Could be wrong though

STARR 09-12-2013 03:48 PM

Running M1 0w40 with an M1 110 extended performance oil filter, used oil analysis says oil was good for another 5k at 5000miles, so depending on timing and when it possible, I change at 7500 to 10k.

For those concerned and outraged over such short oil change intervals, the select few change the oil, all the rest, do the bare minimum, skip oil changes, or don't change at all, just look at the beat used cars on dealer lots, and look at all the new car sales;)

slicknick 09-13-2013 12:18 AM

mobil 1 every 10k

Envymynissan 09-13-2013 04:21 AM

Mobil1 full synthetic every 5k with oem filter at the dealer

Yeah, I agree that they look to be on the cheap side but when all is said and done if they perform as advertized and are not failing they must be doing something right. Sure looks like they test the crap out of them.

Propa Teknique 09-13-2013 10:44 AM

With my 6Gen I used Mobil1 Full Synthetic however now with my 7Gen I just take it to the dealership. What do dealearships use for the oil filter and oil?

Dealers use whatever oil they can buy in bulk, its usually Mobil, Castrol, Quaker State, the banner are in the shop usually, filters should be Nissan filters;)
