Cheap mod, great sound

Hello all. A customer came in with a VW and asked me to delete his resonator. I thought that it was going to sound terrible. Boy was I wrong! I really thought it would be very metallic and raspy. Again BOY WAS I WRONG! The car sounded the same at idle and sounded like a performance car at 3k rpm and up. I was blown away. So I decided to remove the 3 foot long center resonator from my car and replace it with 2.5 inch pipe. After I initially fired it up I immediately thought that it was a g35. It had a slight crackle at startup and hushed down immediately. I proceeded to whack the throttle a few times and it sounded fantastic. So for the cost of 3 ft of pipe and some time with my mig welder, I now have the a performance sound when driving aggressively and when idling or keeping the revs down you almost cant tell that anything has been done. I have been looking at several systems that I wanted to install but for the price and the result I think Im going to leave it as is. Here is my thought process. A. Cost very little to do. B. New systems are very pricy C. Sound level at speed and idle is still classy. D. Only get a muscular sound when revving the car out. E. The car is not a race car despite what many people think. It is a quick 4 door sedan that performs well. I did not want it to sound like a Civic with a fart cannon.

If anyone in the NJ/NY/PA area are interested in doing the same (getting a great sound for very little money) just pm me and we can set up an appointment. I will give you guys and girls the best deal I can. If you want to do something more elaborate we can do that for you as well.

Thats awesome! I've been thinking of doing something like that for awhile but didn't want it to sound like a ricer (especially since it's an automatic)

Im not super internet savy or I would post a video. If anyone can give me some directions I can post a video of it tonight.

Good to hear about this and coming from someone who clearly has experience in this area.

Out of curiosity how much would a shop charge for something like this? I'm in SoCal so no way of meeting you....also any issues with local emission laws or passing state inspection/smog tests?

Great work, can't wait to see the video. Try just posting it on YouTube and providing a link to it here.

MEINEKEMAX 10-14-2013 11:01 AM

I would retail for $150 forum price 125 but I'm competitive. Other shops around here hate my pricing.

cleanmax316 10-14-2013 11:07 AM

Would this possibly void any warranty?

I don't see how or even why it would or could

Youtube is fairly straight forward regarding uploading of videos. You just need to set up a google/youtube account, upload your video recorded from a phone or digital camcorder, and post us the link when the video is "live."

I've heard of others doing a resonator delete as well and have always been contemplating it. Does the removal and install require cutting/welding? I didn't take the time to check it out, but would prefer if things weren't so "permanent." :D

Wish I could drive down to your shop =s

Things aren't very permanent. I actually made up extensions so I can slide the o.e. resonator back into place and then clamp or weld when its time to part ways with the car. Very cheap and easy either way. Doesn't void warrant, wont set off check engine lights. It wont add any significant power but it sounds cool and wont break your wallet.

4th gen maxi 10-14-2013 12:15 PM

If anybody is interested I have a brand new test pipe for 4th gens I can do $35.
Its a 2.25" which for a stock car you'd be surprise on the performance and sound.

Ghozt 10-14-2013 12:16 PM

the drone on that when you're cruising is going to get annoying. my boy did this to his 7th gen, its loud yeah, but the drone around 2500-3000 rpms isnt great.

MEINEKEMAX 10-14-2013 12:54 PM

I drove about 200 miles yesterday, mostly at speed and I got 0 drone. I know drone I sell lots of flowmaster product. Unless your crusing at 100 I cant see that being an issue at 75 I didn't hear a peep. I tried to get it to drone. I cruised as slow as 45 and as fast as 85-90ish. Maybe im lucky or maybe he used a different size pipe? I don't know.

Ghozt 10-14-2013 01:56 PM

nope - same thing just deleted it.

djfergi 10-14-2013 03:56 PM

Sounds good. Would it be possible to get some video while the car is being driven?

MEINEKEMAX 10-14-2013 05:16 PM

Shouldn't be a problem will do next day or so

maxima.713 10-14-2013 05:22 PM

$125 is a little steep for a resonator delete IMO. Sounds alright though.

MEINEKEMAX 10-15-2013 03:10 AM

Go to a shop and see what they charge for the pipe 2 hangers and welding it in . That's a more than fair price for 2.5 inch stainless pipe. It's not aluminized crap held on with 2 clamps and no hangers.

Tommy6905 10-15-2013 04:44 AM

I did this on a 09 Altima 2.5, it sounded ok at first but then the drone really gets to you. Wasn't long before I went back to stock

MEINEKEMAX 10-15-2013 10:53 AM

I never stated that this was some new idea, however it offers people the option of a more aggressive sound at an affordable price as opposed to spending 1000+ to be one of the cool kids that can say they have every name brand mod out there. It may drone down the road but at this point I am way ahead of the game.

maxima.713 10-15-2013 11:15 AM

I dont see how yall have a stock exhaust with just a resonator delete and are complaining that it drones lol

Lol

Does anyone have a sound clip of this?

MEINEKEMAX 10-21-2013 05:56 AM

Sorry for the delay. Last night was the first long trip in the car since the resonator delete. Logged 190 drone free miles yesterday.

you do realize the purpose of the resonator is to eliminate drone and exhaust noise right?

Jbling700 10-21-2013 12:13 PM

MEINEKEMAX: Where in NJ are you located? I need something done to my exhaust. Please PM me.

Love that video

Eff the haters haha

MaximaDrvr 10-28-2013 08:15 PM

My shop in NC charged $100 for this job..... Aluminized pipe, but going to stainless pipe doesn't add that much.

Also, if you change mufflers in conjunction with the resonator delete, drone may happen.
I have it a bit. It wasn't super bad, but it was more than I wanted. I dropped in a high flow mini resonator in its place, and it is much better. Still a small amount, but the radio volumes haven't gone up.

And here I am ADDING huge azz resonators to mine to quiet it down.

Just added the one on the left, 30" long, 6" body, 3" in/out. Removed the combo on the right because it didn't do enough for sound suppression.

Gutting the Cats is cheap and gives it a nice growl. Just got done gutting mine last night :D FYI: it was a total PITA

sonicrunch 11-01-2013 08:06 AM

I wish my car had more resonators.

2_da_max101 11-01-2013 08:49 AM

I did this mod 2 years ago when i just got my max it cost me 40 bucks at a junkyard here in queens heres is mine i will upload another vid later

Racerbox77 11-10-2013 08:36 AM

Does the new Max have the same 3rd unmetered cat that the 05 3.5 Altimas did?
I had an 05 SE-R that I removed the 3rd cat and the resonator and left everything else on the exhaust stock. It sounded awesome!
I just ordered a 2014 Max and will be doing the same mod.
So anyone know?

Jig9798 11-10-2013 03:59 PM

3rd cat is un metered. Racing line y-pipe deletes this cat, while retaining the ~6 foot long resonator pipe.
