2010sv Steering lock issue
Hello, I'm having that "steering wheel issue" with my car. Car won't start and there's a yellow key simple on the dash. I've been reading that Nissan was taking care of the 2009s only...has that been updated yet? I can't find any newer threads on the 2010s with this issue. If not is there any body I can complain to? I really cannot afford this repair.

You can always contact Nissan regarding this: http://www.nissanassist.com/web/ESCL...ct.php?menu=63
Have you tried the temporary fixes to get your car started? -- TEMPORARY POTENTIAL SOLUTIONS TO TRY IF YOU ARE STRANDED -- 1) Try the edmunds technique.... Turn the car off completely. Unlock your steering column (the lever under the steering) and abruptly move the steering wheel all the way up and down several times while hitting the push-start button once to ACC. If you hear a winding nose your steering-lock is free and should start the car...continue starting the car. If you dont hear it, re-try. 2) Try the tapping technique (if you want to call it that).... Turn the car off. get under your steering column, locate your steering lock, tap at the steering lock itself GENTLY with a small hammer or plastic mallet...while you press the start button once. or even use one of your metal temporary tools in the trunk. If you hear a winding noise coming from the steering-lock it is free. You should be able to start the car. Continue to start the car. If you don't hear the noise continue tapping it and cycle through the starter button ACC/ON/OFF a few times slowly. 3) Try unplugging the steering lock harness and tap at the steering lock gently, plug it back in and try #2) above. |
I had the very same problem today on my 2010 maxima SV. It was stranded at my wife's work. I read on here about tapping on the steering lock mech might work it loose so I skeptically tried it hoping to avoid a tow truck bill and it actually worked! I also read here that once the car is running, pull the under-hood fuse for the steering lock and I also did that just to make sure I got to the dealership for repairs! They said my car wasn't included in Nissan's "warranty extension" for the issue but without my extended warranty, which I got when I bought the car, it would be $900!! Some say to just leave the fuse out and be done with it but in my opinion, there is a reason it's in there! Good luck buddy!

Question for BHunt and lamtybaby: What is the build date on your car?
|
My 2010 has a 12/09 build date and doesn't have the lock feature active.

The effected 2010's are built before 1N4AA5AP3AC 812165 / Sept 30, 2009. The warranty extension clearly states 2009's ONLY. This leaves a lot of 2010's, with the same part and same problem, out in the cold.

Mine went out on my old '09 SV and my Nissan dealership in RI got it done for free.
First the tilt went and shortly thereafter the telescopic. Two trips, two fixes, no charge. I've since traded it in, but yeah, what a pain in the butt. Good luck. |

Hi guys,
I have a 2010 Maxima SV. The steering lock issue happened to me 3 days ago just after I was leaving from work. I had it towed to the dealership assuming I would have to pay for it out of my pocket (since the last I checked, Nissan only covered 2009s). So left the car in the after-hours service lot, and I got a call today from the dealer. He said that he replaced it with the latest part and Nissan covered it, and that I don't have to pay for it. When asked how long I will have this part covered for (warranty), he said 1 year/12,000 mile. I am going to call Nissan tomorrow and try getting my towing charges reimbursed and double check the warranty period for this part. Original part was 48700-9N00A Replaced with 48700-9N00B Car was built on October or November 2009. Hope this information helps. |
Funny thing, I was in the fusebox under the hood of my 2010 Maxima SV and there is no fuse in the steering wheel lock slot. It has also been discussed here before I believe how to fix it.
""REMOVE THE FUSE FROM THE STEERING WHEEL LOCK SLOT UNDER THE HOOD FUSE BOX."" - PROBLEM SOLVED!!! |
ameenakram30 thats great. I guess it is up to the dealers to decide. I called Nissan assist and they are ridged about covering 2009's only, regardless of production date. If I were you, I would go ahead and pull the fuse to disable the ESCL. If the new part solved the issue they would not have left out the fuse on later 2010's, 2011's and eventually removed the ESCL system all together.

I don't know about the dealers disabling the steering lock without permission, but the 2010's built after 1N4AA5AP3AC 812165 / Sept 30, 2009 do not have a fuse in the slot.
