250a battery fuse keeps blowing
Hey everybody I have an 2012 Nissan Maxima. I had water in my fuel system. So the service shop recommended for me to drain the tank which I did. I also change my spark plugs. Now everything is put back together but when ever I try to crank the car I’m blowing the battery fuse. Does anyone know what might be causing this problem? |
How did water get into the tank?

Sounds to me a cable got put wrong or is grounding out. Does the fuse blow when on accessory, run, or only when the starter attempts. I am thinking perhaps on the wiring harness to the tank/fuel pump.

Thanks for your reply. I didn’t think to check the wires for the fuel pump. But basically what’s happening now after I changed the spark plugs is the fuse is fine as far as controlling all the electrical components in the car but as soon as I press the brake to completely start the car is when the fuse blows. Which then kills all power except to the dome lights. |
But just stepping on the brake doesnt blow the fuse. I am still thinking when you dropped the tank the wires chafed.or that is where i would start. But 250amp fuse blowing is more normally associated with the alternator. Do you think you coud have bumped or disconnected that when you had the plugs changed?

I checked the ground and plug to the alternator and it looked good. But I will double check again when the sun comes out. Thank you for help so far.

Also I agree just stepping on the break doesn’t blow the fuse. I should have explained better. It’s a push start ignition so in order to engaged the starter I have to hold the break down. As soon as push the button to crank the car up is when I blow the fuse |
I would focus on the starter motor. The other possibility is the alternator. I would disconnect the power lead at the starter and then try to start the car. I know the starter wont turn but if the 250A fuse does not blow, it indicates the starter is shorting out. The starter should not be that difficult to remove. Take it out and get it tested at your local auto parts store.

You can also try disconnecting the power lead going from the battery to the alternator. (I'm not sure how hard those wires are to get at) Then try starting the car. If the fuse still blows then I would definitely think it is the starter.
The best advice I can probably give you is to just remove the starter and get it tested. |
Ok will do. I’m going to google the location of those parts and trace my steps.

This information below should help. I think that to remove the alternator, also called a generator, requires that the ac compressor be removed. That is not good. Hope it is the starter. Maybe you dropped something while changing the plugs that could cause a short?
