Mpg really low

Mpg really low
Just got my 2016 Maxima SV last week and the MPG I am averaging is below 13mpg. It's been mostly city driving so far but from what I have read it should be much higher. Anyone have any idea why this would he happening? Could it be that the engine hasn't been broken in yet?

Same here. I was getting 17-18 mpg if I drive aggressively in the city. I decided to ease off gas pedal and have been getting 22-23 consistently in the city. Highway is where this car excels as I get 30 every single time.

That's absurd in my opinion. I mean I didn't get this car to keep it at 1000 rpm. I'm becoming super pissed with what clearly seems like false advertising in regards to fuel economy. Keep in mind the speed limit in NYC is 25mph so it's not like I can really put the car thru it's paces. But averaging 13mpg is ridiculous in my opinion!

Well we have been in a two week heatwave, so as was pointed out earlier, running the AC constantly will impact mileage, especially when combined with stop and go city driving. Almost all reviews I've read have praised the fuel economy for this vehicle. There is also the fact that this a new car for you and it's a "fun" car to drive, perhaps you're hitting the gas pedal bit more than you realize. Maybe just give it more time.

Again, having owned many different types of transmissions - including up through the BMW/ZF 8-speed auto, Nissan 6-speed dual-clutch, and Honda/Acura's piece of crap 6-speed - the CVT is one of the trickiest to modulate for gas mileage (since it "jumps" to 4k then settles down).
Conceptually it should be better than the others, but with 300HP, it doesn't do as good a job.
But I just went through the exercise this morning since I've been averaging 19.7 MPG 'mixed' (weighted towards city). On the highway, 30+. Divided roads w/ 45-55 limits, I get 23-25mpg.

Boy Racer--Wrong car! I get 30+ average both town and open road. The power is always there, why do you need to race stop sign to stop sign? Your next complaint might be premature brake replacement.

I thought it was common sense that if you buy a 300 horse power V6 and floor it then your gas Mileage will suck! This isn't only in the Maxima but in any car. My F150 eco boost says like 21 mpg and I get 13 because I have a lead foot.
My wife's Mercedes says 30 mpg and she gets it because she drives like my grandma in a horse carriage.

Summertime stop-and-go traffic with the A/C on in a zoo like NYC will slaughter your MPG. IDK how long your commute is but short trips at 25 mph won't allow the engine to fully warm up, also adversely affecting the mileage.

I have gotten 35 on the highway.

The type of gas makes a difference too. The one time I tried being cheep and went with lower octane gas, My mpg dropped. I haven't driven in NYC, but I do live in the Burbs of philly and go into the city a lot. Up until we went on vacation, the historical average was 26.5. After our trip it jumped to 28! We made it from Tennessee to new jersey on one tank of gas, pretty amazing for any car, let alone a V6. I wasn't being careful either, I was running about 85 the whole way back.
Even driving through the mountains on the back roads I averaged 27-28. Sorry I'm bragging more than helping,

My mpg suck right now too in the city. Sitting at traffic lights getting zero mpg along with using the a/C and cooled seat kills the gas mileage.
However, I took a ride on a cooler day and had no accessories on in the car and got 35 mpg highway. Not bad for 3800 pounds and 300 hp.
This cars sweet spot seems to be about 55-60 mph to get the best gas mileage.
I was able to get over 41 mpg with my 2015 GTI, but that car was highly tuned, had no cats and had a manual transmission. It was also 800 pounds less, but it had over 350 hp at the time. A 4 cylinder turbo with manual transmission is what you want for maximum mpg.
The CVT is good, but it can't hold a candle to a manual transmission when it comes to gas mileage.

I would use Shell 91, but it isn't offered. It's either 87, 89 or 93.
Edit: BP has good gasoline as well. If I can't find a Shell nearby, BP it is.

Reset your trip data and run it for a few days - you may be surprised at the average MPG.
My commute to work is mostly city with a bit of highway, and I was surprised to see I average about 20mph. This may explain my poor mileage (under 20).
The one time I took a long highway trip I did average ~30.
FWIW, I also use regular most of the time - I don't need the supposed performance when running a car that slow.

Any time you cycle from either Auto, or any config that runs the AC, like defrost, and you go back to manual mode, the AC light is off, but the ac is still on. You have to manually toggle the AC on and off again to get it to truly turn off to just vent. For some reason Nissan wants the compressor running all the time pretty much unless you manually override it.

You mention an important point. From earlier posts in this thread, it is clear there are some who think octane is still related to MPG/fuel efficiency. IT IS NOT. Octane is definitely related to acceleration, performance, etc, but NOT to fuel efficiency.
This is something that has been misunderstood by many folks for many years, and is a carryover from back in the days when car computers did not have the ability to adjust to fuels with different octanes, and putting regular in a car whose compression called for high octane resulted in much pinging on hills, poor acceleration and sometimes engine damage.

I just got a 16 maxima SV and after a day of driving it, (less than 30 miles), and NOT with a heavy foot I am sitting At 10.5 currently. It’s gotten as high as 11.5 and as low as 9.8.. This is too low right? Though I have been blasting AC today and I had it idle for a good amount of time. However I feel this is way too low.. something must be wrong?

Better scenario would be to FILL the tank, RESET the computer, or what ever is on a '16, I can't remember, get out on the highway tonight or whenever traffic lessens, and drive about 50 miles as you would normally- check your readout then. If you want to achieve optimum MPG, then do what you can to maintain, say, a steady73 MPH- my 2020 SR will give me 33- 34 MPG at 73 MPH- using cruise control. I don't worry about mileage in traffic or in town- it's still around 18 even with some loud pedal...your results may vary, I have had eight Maximas going back manual gearboxes and 190 HP, and they all returned far better mileage than what you are seeing...take the emergency brake off?? COLD tire pressures are 33 PSI all around..and as stated above, why do you "have it idle"?? That computes to zero MPG..check your warning lights for "operator error"
