Releasing the brake in Park and Car jerks

So my 2017 Maxima when Stopped at a red light for example and you take your foot off the brake before accelerating the RPM’s drop a little that jolts up a little causing the car to jerk for a second before hitting the gas. The dealer is a bit lost and they reached out to Nissan for an answer. Any thoughts? Thank you so much.

FattiesGoneWild 01-10-2018 09:29 PM

No idea. I have never experienced this in our Maxima personally.

Fishlet 01-10-2018 10:08 PM

Sorry, don't know either. In my car, there is a very slight jerk sometimes if I'm pressing very lightly on the gas and I'm coasting in the 40-45 mph range. It's not a very extreme, but just a little bit, enough to be annoying sometimes. It almost feels like the transmission is engaging and disengaging if that makes sense. But it's perfectly smooth in every other speed range including when at stop lights. It's probably a good idea to let your mechanic work it out.

BostonMaxima2017 01-11-2018 02:35 AM

That’s unfortunate for you man. Yes The Nissan dealership is trying to figure it with Corporate Nissan. The car is perfect I’m every way except at that point. Hopefully they figure out your issue.

CVT is the reason why it jerks. It happens to all the CVT transmission.

Explain, in technical detail. :)

BostonMaxima2017 01-12-2018 02:35 AM

This is abnormal however. I own a 2009 Maxima, a 2016 SR Altima and owned a 2010 and never had this issue all with CVT. If it was the CVT it would happen during gear changes or upon acceleration. This is not the case with this it only happens when at 0 MPH only when in D and only when you release the brake. But thank you.

CVTs don't have gears with which to make changes.

Yeah, if the techs can't figure it out with the basics, and resorting to Nissan, there's likely a serious problem here. Could be a bad sensor, software issue, computer, failing plug or coil that went undetected, contaminated fuel lines...good luck, hope they don't get you with dirty fuel claim and may you pay for a new tank and lines!

The jerking of the car never happens when you first get a brand new CVT car like the Nissan Maxima that we all have. Later on while driving and driving, the jerkingness if thats a word, builds up over time and starts jerking when driving in low speeds such as being stuck in a stop and go traffic. That is the reason why it jerks because of the build up of something which I forgot in the CVT which makes it jerk.

i guess it is like when timing (gas and cluth ped) is off shifting on a manual tranny. torque converters and cvt tranny is not a happy couple evertime they hold hands. seems like the rpm between maxima’s “1st” and “2nd” gear ratio-ish. but when they are happy, they can turn to beast mode.

Thanks for the simple, but highly technical explanation.

Normally techno jargon confuses me, but not this time. I understand.

Or not.

Actually love part that is being replaced is the “Valve Body” that was replaced and solved the problem.
Thank you and hopes this helps someone

Hopefully that fixes it for you. I had weird jerkiness and they replaced the valve body, ran fine for 4 days then it completely died and they said the throttle body went bad too. Hopefully you don't go through that!

Thanks Boston Max,

I'll have to run that by my mechanic when I get around to bringing it in. The problem for me is that it is sooo slight and not very consistent, I'm not sure they will even feel it. If I'm not paying attention I don't always notice either. If if doing "spirited driving" then it drives amazingly good. I might have to wait for it to get a bit worse first.

Just make sure to have it done before the 36k so it’s covered man. Good luck

CVTs are 10 years/ 120,000 miles

Not on these new ones. 5-year/60k

BostonMaxima2017 01-13-2018 03:04 AM

That valve body I thought was in the 3 year 36k so that’s good to know. My 2016 Nissan Altima SR has 44 K and is perfect but out of warranty
