2016-2018 owners CVT issues/replacement
 

This has me curious. How many owners on here have had CVT issues with their Maxima? Most importantly. How many have had their CVT replaced? I have yet to read anyone have their CVT die on them with this latest gen Maxima?

No problems with mine. My wife's Pathfinder has been problem free as well. It seems Nissan has worked out the bugs. I have a co-worker that had the CVT replaced in a 2013 Altima 2.5, but I believe that is a different unit than the one used with the V6.

I have been having problems with mine. It is really rough when accelerating. If I gun it, no problems. But if I drive slow or normal it bogs down and vibrates the whole car. I plan on taking it to the stealership to get fixed.

I guess I have been lucky. my 2017 Platinum is the fourth Nissan I have had that uses the CVT. Three have gone over 100k miles without any issues and my wifes 2011 Murano has just over 111k miles.i

On the other hand I am an old fart and my street racing days are over. I did, however, tear up a lot of transmissions in my younger days. The one in my 1970 Challenger lasted less than 10k miles. It's like I used to tell my kids, "don't come crying to me if you tear up your toys".

2017 SL Purchased with 3 miles on the dash, currently 27,583 with ZERO issues.

Wow. Must be a garage queen with so few miles.

Almost 40k miles no major problems so far. I feel the torque converter lock up a bit more than I'd like in moderate "slow and go" driving. Comes and goes really. I bought a warranty until 120k just in case. I wouldn't mind honestly if the thing blew up at 110k and I got a replacement CVT out of the deal. Still plan on changing the fluid at 60k, 90k, 120k. I open her up once in a while and she always has more than enough power while passing. I am still happy with the move from 180 lb/ft torque / 182hp to 261lb/ft 300hp.

Careful what you wish for. It depends on where you are when it fails. My sister's CVT on a 2011 Altima failed while she was driving on a freeway, busy traffic at high speeds, in the St. Louis area. Let's just say she was not amused - actually it was a pretty damn scary experience according to her, I can only imagine ....

Yeah for sure. But the thing is, for my sister it didn't even go "boom", it just ... "died peacefully", but in the middle of the road, at high speed. Not fun, or funny.

I took the car to the stealership and they are saying that the transmission needs to be replaced. I have 65,000 miles on it, so no warranty. Nissan has agreed to pay for the parts which is 2300.00 and I need to come up with the portion for the labor, 1900.00. I have never had such a major problem this early in a car. Fortunately Nissan is picking some of it up but it makes me question whether or not of owning another Nissan. I was planning on getting the Murano for the wife but I may look elsewhere.

That's unfortunate and it's a real turn-off, but it happens. For example, Subarus are not known for having transmission problems yet the transmission on my ex-wife's Outback went out after 28,000 miles [fortunately, replaced under warranty]. As for me, I owned a 2005 Maxima to 137,000 miles and although many other parts broke after about 110,000 miles, never ever had any transmission problems with it. Just the "luck of the draw", I guess.

There would be no question in my mind...Nissan would not get another dime of mine if they did not step up and pick up the whole tab. Goodwill repairs go a long way....Nissan did me a Solid on my 02 Altima and I have been loyal since....However, I am not a CVT fan and will most likely not own another Nissan.

Guys, I know it is very tempting to indicate "no problems with mine", but I believe Fatties is asking for feedback from only those of us who have had trans replacements.

it is definitely reassuring but I don't think he was asking for that. I'll back out.

I just hit 31,000 miles today. Since around 20,000 my car has been making an audible "ssssssss" at around 1500 RPM. I don't know if it has anything to do with the transmission and haven't had any luck diagnosing it.

My torque converter is very jerky. If I use cruise control at 50km/h on a hot summer day, at its worst, the car will buck like a bronco as the torque converter constantly locks and unlocks. Of course the dealer says there's nothing wrong.

Same experience here, though not as severe. It engages / disengages around 30-40mph in stop and go traffic. Once it gets past that point it's fine though.

My 2016 did not do this.
My 2019 does do this. I thought it was the laser cruise control acting sh$$tty.

My 2019 is turbine smooth as was the 2016 Maxima I just traded in. If all fairness though I had one incident on the 2016 @ 30,000 miles where they replaced a CVT valve under warranty do to a slight "judder" at 25 mph.
