THE BBK PiCTURE THREAD (Show off your BBK setup here)

I know many guys are now running custom BBks. Two of the most common being Ford Mustang Cobra 13" Rotors with Q45/300ZX calipers or Nissan A34 Maxima rotors with 300ZX or stock calipers. This thread i am hoping that we can gather pictures of different setups and impressions. Also please state if your car has ABS or not.

1. I like my rotors strong, not cracking ;)
2. Blanks provide better stopping power in street applications
3. With the price of pads for these things, slotted/drilled wear pads down too fast!
4. I personally like the smooth look, and don't really like the slotted/xd look. Some people do and that's fine, but I like smooth, shiny rotor personally :grinno:

Good ol'e 13" cobra rotor, 300zx 4 piston caliper deal. Polished that is. :)

Polish FTL.
I must admit at first I was not too keen on the cobra rotor BBK but recently it has become much more appealing, seems like its the best bang for the buck giving the most for your dollar.

13" rotors FTW. I will personally be using q calipers because I feel that 4 piston calipers are over kill and probally will not clear my wheels.
I am also having Automax_95 redrill my rotors for Maxima wheel stud diameter and bolt pattern.

So my cost break down is
Q45 rebuilt calipers with new hardware- $200
Jeff92se BBk brackets and Hubcentric Rings- $90
Automax_95 RTP Zinc plated/Slotted Ford Mustang Cobra Rotors- $170
PBR/Axxis MM pads-$45
Brake Bolts-$10

So for basically under $600 i have a 13" bbk with 2 piston calipers that can compare to Stillens $1000 2 piston caliper kit.

Jeff92se 08-29-2006 09:02 AM

Yup. The 13" rotor w/ the Q or J calipers is a good choice. But polish FTL? You're crazy man. :)

Remember I also have 1" larger rotors in the back :) 3-gens get to upgrade to larger rear rotors very, very easy. I even sold brackets for the 3-gen. But no one really bought them. But for those that did, swore by them. For 4-gen+, you have to go to Matt

sagamax 08-29-2006 09:25 AM

aluminum z32 caliper
crossdrilled a34 rotor
hawk hps pads

i love this setup!! definately big upgrade from the stock brakes. when stomping on the brakes you can feel a slight biased to the front but it is still a major upgrade from stock. definatly worth the money spent on them

How do you manage to keep those things clean? Polished aluminum is hard enough to maintain in a show car engine bay. I remember helping a friend out with his hot rod, it took 3 guys all night with toothbrushes to get everything clean

Jeff92se 08-29-2006 09:38 AM

The polish was a DIY project. A pain BTW. So it was never show quality. But I sprayed some high temp clear over it. Held up pretty good for the time I had it. I think I had it this way for at least a year?

Here's a better pic:

ahh, clear coat explains it I should have done that on mine, the brake dust is hard to clean off after awhile

6th gen rotors and calipers courtesy of Irish and a few bucks...

This is by far the best "bang for your buck" with the price Irish sold them for!

Jwad00 09-03-2006 05:26 PM

Those calipers with the Nissan lettering on them are badass! Where are you guys getting those?

irish44j 09-03-2006 07:10 PM

they're from the Z32 300zx...

I completely agree, I'm a big advocate of blank rotors. Wish I had the $$ (and the clearance) for some serious brakes, but I'm missing both.

Hey vsamoylov, niice looking bbk. It almost seems like the rotors were designed for your application, the caliper sweeps across almost the entire face of the rotor, as opposed to most cobra/Z32 setups where the innermost part of the rotor face goes untouched. The 2pc rotors look great man, what kind are they anyway?

Larrio Motors 09-06-2006 12:02 PM

I think that's because he has a two piece design vs. the other ones that are a solid one-piece

Jeff92se 09-06-2006 12:04 PM

Exactly. I wish people would understand this

Anyone look at stock rotors? Even stock rotors aren't swept 100%. It just looks that way because the unswept parts eventually rust over

vsamoylov 09-06-2006 12:07 PM

rotors are 2 piece rotors from the 2003 mustang cobra. they are made by baer.
the comment on how the pad touches all of the surface is not because they are a 2 piece rotor. its is because the caliper was modified so that when the pads are installed they would touch all of the surface.

Jeff92se 09-06-2006 12:09 PM

Yes grinding the cast aluminum caliper for another 1 mm of pad contact.

yeah so what and its actually more then 1 mm and it was still important for me that the whole pad would rub against the rotor

Jeff92se 09-06-2006 12:19 PM

I'd much rather have 1mm of pad overhang than grind 1-2-3 mm of brake caliper material (1mm for the over hang and 1-2 for clearances).

It's important to me not to sacrafice the strength of the caliper. IMHO.

Hi Chung,

how do the ap's compare to the previous willwood kit's you've had?

A little less spongy brake feel (AP caliper is bigger and heavier so it's stiffer) and the piston sizes better suite the car than my last set (4 x 1.38") and the original Fastbrakes kit (1.38 and 1.75" sequential bore SL which flexed a lot). The AP calipers also have the outter dust seals which the Wilwoods did not.
