How much bracing is too much? Is there such a thing?
Hi, I've been reading about the SFC's, the sidemembers and the crossmembers and what they do. My question is this, Is is a bad thing to have a tank-like subframe? I'm talking about the sidemembers, and welding crossbracing in a zigzag from firewall to muffler, and a big thick LTB.
The reason I am asking is because I am going to be buying a MIG welder soon, and I have sufficient welding skill to take on a project like this (of course this is only after I make my turbo manifold). And since you just read that I am going to turbo the car, I'll already have tons of extra hp to support the extra 100lbs or so, especially since the extra lbs are already sprung |
the only drawback to extra bracing is the extra weight.
If you're just stacking on tubes and random angles, you're going to add weight and not a ton of stiffness. you really need to do the engineering homework before you go much past the standard SFCs + chassis braces. |
