Two ECU's

I have an idea that might make things easier for the VQ35 swap. Tell me what you think:

I could plug the 1995 ECU for all non-essential systems; Power windows, power locks, sunroof, lights and the speed sensor for the 1995 Gauge Cluster to work (Because the transmission is from my 1995 anyway). Hell, we could even connect the starter and not have to f*ck around with the steering column, ignition switch, or open the door panels and all.

Then, connect the 2002 for all the sensors on the engine, crank Position sensor, and oxygen sensor. That way, the 2002 only controls the engine, VTC, and all that. And the 1995 ECU controls the non-essential systems. So basically, the car would run on two ECU's. How do you guys think that'd work?

Why not get the HKS F-CON V Pro and have that control the engine? It would essentially be the same setup the 350Z guys are using, except your main ECU would be the 95 maxima ECU instead of the 03+ Z ECU.

I already have a 2002 5-speed 3.5 Altima ECU.

will you still have the vtc feature with this setup or what

jclaw you mention that you can do a full 3.5 swap with an altima 3.5, ecu and wiring harness while keeping our 5spd because you said the 3.5 alty has the same trans. Now my questions is the 3.5 Alty drive by wire? If so how are you gonna get around that swapping pedals or switching it to a pathfinder TB? My buddy ran two ecus for a while in his 200sx but it was easier for him because there were two harness plugs, if we were to run 2 ecus, we would need to take the plug apart, figure out what wires what and splice in another plug for the 02 or 95 ecu. It sounds likes a lot of work...

The 02 ecu still needs to see a signal from the NVIS IMMU (Immobilizer) before it will function. Unless you have a way around that, you are still going to need the chipped key and the Immobilizer unit.

After looking at the 02 EC wiring diagram, I really do not see any benefit of trying to run 2 ecus. Typically if any input is missing, or not within a specified range, you will get a MIL. Conversely from what I can see, all the outputs are things you need the 02 ecu to be in control of. (ie. all engine functions, cooling fans, a/c cut, etc.)
There is no ecm (95) control over sunroof, door locks, etc. I think you may have it mixed up with the BCM.

Vasily (who did a full 2k2 Swap in his 1996) is still using the 1996 ignition key/steering column. BTW, what is the NVIS IMMU?

You have the 02 wiring diagrams? Is it possible for you to send 'em to me through E-mail?

I just use the e-gas for the gas pedal with the 02 ECU, so no need for a pathfinder TB.The only difference between the 1995 and 2002 5-speeds is that mine is rod-driven, the 02 is drive by wire. But that is mechanical. Whether the shifter is driven by a rod or by a cable, doesn't mater. The gas pedal is another thing entirely. "Drive by wire" means e-gas (electronically controled) and has nothing to do with the shifter linkage. No electronics involved with the shifter.

The only benefit I see from running the 3.5 ECU is the variable timing.. To me, it's just not worth the time and effort.

JClaw Feb 27, 2005 06:04 PM

It is said to increase TQ and HP by 9% at 2000 rpm and 12% at 3000 (and just doesn't drop off like a cliff right there). That's pretty f*cking significant to me. Besides, even Tilley himself admited that the full 3.5 on 3.0 ecu required significant work. Both way require lots of work. Instead of requiring in the engine bay (Tilley's way), it's rewiring in the car.

Acronym for Nissan Vehicle Immobilization System Immobilizer Unit

I would strongly recommend getting a copy of atleast the EC section from an 02 Altima FSM.

JClaw Feb 27, 2005 07:47 PM

Thanks. Tomorrow my dad will call a guy he's known for -/+ 30 years who works at the Nissan Dealer. For wiring diagrams, I'll see what that brings.

TILLEYS99 Feb 28, 2005 06:04 AM

Good luck with that. I have seen alot of new cars that need a speed signal from the trans for vtec (in our case VTC) too work. It may work but very questionable.

JClaw Mar 1, 2005 09:46 AM

Well I now have the FSM (From a 2004) and I think I'll stick with one ECU :noes:

DAVE Sz Mar 5, 2005 10:08 AM

the alti trans has different gearing compared to the 3.0 max 5spd

JClaw Mar 5, 2005 10:15 AM

It's very close, but yes, a little different.

Doesn't mater. SR20DEN has a 2002 Maxima 6-speed and he recently swapped out his 6-speed for a 2004 Maxima 6-speed, which has different ratios. No problem there.

liqidvenom Mar 6, 2005 11:42 PM

y did sr swap out his 02 tranny?

JClaw Mar 7, 2005 08:19 AM

'cause it died.
