VQ35 swap q's

Alright got a few questions about a 35 swap. Would the engine out of an '04+ maxima thats advertised as 265 HP make that same power in my 95? Also if i am correct the engines are the same size but the 35 weighs less. any benefits to that? and finally, ECU. does it need to be changed or will the 35 run with the 95 ECU? true final question... average cost of total operation. thanks in advance to anyone who responds :)

read. there are soooo many threads discussing all the info you just asked about within the first few pages of this section.

ROFLOL @ Nismo

1. Yes but only if you enabled CVTC which would require using the VQ35 timing equipment which would require that you use a VQ35 ECU which would require you to rewire the car...see where I'm going with this?
2. The 3.5 does weigh less. Advantages: If you can't think of why this is a good thing, you should go back to the 4th gen forum.
3. You can use a VQ30 ECU or VQ35. So far, only one 4.5 gen is using the VQ35 ECU because of the added misery of rewiring the car.
4. Cost: $3K if you have Tilley do it. ~$1K if you do it yourself.

Can you use a vq35 and run a 3.0 ecu without messing with the cvtc? or is it mandatory to swap it to 3.0 timing equipment if u wanna run a 3.0 ecu?

No.

Yes.

Any questions?

JClaw Jul 11, 2005 08:08 PM

The main reason a 3.5/3.0 ecu setup does not make as much power as 02+ is NOT VTC's. VTC's are used to increase power below 4k, takes nothing off peak.

The real reason is that 02+ run far more timing advance than 95-99 ECU's. That alone might rob you of 20-25whp or so (yes, those numbers were pulled out of my @ss).

steven88 Jul 11, 2005 08:13 PM

JClaw- what would be the best route to get a 95 vq35 swapped maxima to equal an 02 vq35 maxima? Hp wise that is....since u mentioned you are robbed 25whp from the ecu alone...

what about transmission? I hear people keeping their stock 5spds and mating it to the vq35...any modification necessary to make it fit? Since the original vq35 motor came with a 6spd....how about axles?

:squint: I told you I pulled them out of my @ss. I have something in mind for the tuning but you're better off asking someone else about the tuning. I'm pretty inexperienced with cars in general and the swap was my first motor pull, my 5-speed trans was my first rebuild and my maxima is my first modded car.

Bolts right on, just like on the 3.0. All VQ motors use the same bellhousing, and the blocks are externally identical.

All FWD VQ blocks, that is. The engine mount locations are different for RWD VQs.

I wrote it for the benefit of others, lest anyone think they can swap in a 350Z engine. This question comes up occasionally.

MDeezy Jul 12, 2005 11:32 AM

there is a whole lot of help in here.

I am interested in the swap as well, but had a lot of reading to do before I post anything. :reading:

lol guys i went on to read the stickies about this after i posted this, and it answered it all except for wiring/ecu question. thanks for honest answers and not really flaming. as soon as i get good at racing i think this is the route im going to go. 1-2k isnt bad at all seeing as how if i go with a 6th gen engine im gaining 100ish hp.. or is that 265 crank and not wheel. whatever its a lot and would crack me up to bring that to the dealer.

THT Jul 12, 2005 03:19 PM

265hp crank...expect 220-230whp

RockfordMax Jul 12, 2005 04:21 PM

beats 155 :)

THT Jul 12, 2005 04:37 PM

Wait, you're an automatic...the only 3.5 auto that's dyno'ed pulled less than 200whp (untuned)

eckohb Jul 13, 2005 02:03 PM

he pulled 180 untuned. but that was without headers either. tilley only dyno'd at 238 with headers, flywheel, and 00vi, so to say 220-230 whp with the 3.5 motor is a stretch

THT Jul 13, 2005 02:39 PM

It is a stretch. For some reason, I thought I was on my350z.com when I posted that whp figure.

RockfordMax Jul 13, 2005 05:28 PM

yes but if i do the 35 swap im bring a 5/6 speed over with it. why keep the auto..

eckohb Jul 14, 2005 12:52 AM

but if you dont bring over aftermarket headers with it, dont expect 220-230 whp. They add a dyno proven 20 whp/ 20 wtq
