Naturally Aspirated Tuning Discussion
What data is important when looking at dyno tuning a N/A Maxima?
I got to thinking about this as I saw a gentleman tuning a ’87 Mustang with a ’03 Cobra motor with a Kenne Bell SC. He was looking at fuel pressure, timing, boost, as well as the a/f, hp, and tq from the dyno. I now have the ability to data-log a lot of my ECU parameters. I was curious as to what may be of interest when dyno tuning, as well as street tuning. Some of the parameters I can now data log are: (yes, I know some of these will have no bearing on the need to tune) • A/C (Refrigerant Pressure, Relay, Signal Switch) • A/F Correction, Bank 1 & 2 • Absolute Pressure • Accelerator Pedal Position 1 & 2 • Atmospheric Pressure • Base Fuel Schedule • Battery Voltage • Brake Pedal Switch 1 &2 • Calculated Load Value • Coolant Temperature • Corrected Idle RPM • Cruise (High Speed Cut, Set Lamp, Activate Lamp, Brake Switch, Low Speed Cut, Main Switch, Resume/Acc Switch, Set Switch, Speed Set-point) • Electrical Load Signal • Engine Speed • EVAP (Canister Purge Control Valve, Canister Vent Valve, System Pressure) • Fuel (Pump Relay, Tank Level, Tank Temperature) • Idle Air Volume Learn Status • Ignition (Switch, Timing Advance) • Intake Camshaft (Advance Bank 1 & 2, Cont Sol. Bank 1 & 2) • Mass Air Flow (Volts, gm/s) • NB O2 Sensor 1 & 2, Bank 1 & 2 (Lean-Rich) • NB O2 Sensor 1 & 2, Bank 1 & 2 (Voltage ) • NB O2 Sensor 1 & 2, Bank 1 & 2 (Heater) • Power Steering Pressure • Radiator Cooling Fan 1 & 2 • Start Signal • Throttle Position Sensor 1 & 2 • Throttle Relay Control • Traveled Distance After CEL • Vehicle Speed I can also advance/retard timing 2 degrees, as well as adjust my base idle 250 rpm. I can detect and clear DTC codes and clear learned fuel settings. So, important data when tuning on a dyno is as follows: Air Fuel Ratio (via wideband) Horsepower (via dyno) Torque (via dyno) What else? (of the list above) |
What about engine temperature? via coolant temperature?
to help determine how heat soak is affecting power after repeated dyno and 1/4 runs.. |
