It's alive!!! 3.5 swap with cams

Worked all weekend and got the car back together. 3.5 swap with JWT knockoff cams, and also did a transmission rebuild by myself. I replaced the differential bearings and the input shaft bearings. I will dyno in two weeks, and hit up the track shortly thereafter. I only drove it for about 15 minutes, and it is a beast, it pulls so much harder than my 3.0 engine. Sorry I have have any more pics or info yet.

I have a short video shot on my digital camera that is 8 mb if someone would like to host it. Shows the car idleing and gently revving with the cutout open.

Sounds nice. I have my engine out now and I can't decide if I want to put cams in it. What is the brand of the JWT knockoffs?

Nismo3112 Mar 20, 2006 10:35 AM

Congrats!!! Another one on the list:)

Why do you have your engine out?

Trying to do the engine at the same time as a transmission rebuild was a mistake on my part. It was way too much to keep track of in my limited space. It took me 3 weeks from start to finish, alot of which was spent waiting on parts. Only engine I have ever had apart is my VW rail buggy engine, this was quite different. The transmission was overwhelming when I first took it apart, but it was pretty easy to finish with the FSM. Making sure the cam timing was correct was the only part that I was nervous on, drilling the cams and then making sure it was all lined up left alot to go wrong.

The hardest part was setting the engine and tranny together from the top side, I am glad I had two friends over for help, I would have never gotten it.

Nealoc187 Mar 20, 2006 12:09 PM

wow nice, I wasn't aware you were doing a swap. Should have some sick times after you get it to the track.

SDot82 Mar 20, 2006 12:56 PM

Man, this is making want to do the 3.5 swap more and more. It might happen soon since my engine is making bad noises. Good job.

chris'smax Mar 20, 2006 01:43 PM

damn you, you beat me to it:) . I am going to be using the Nismo 3.5L cams. How is the idle?

The idle is good at 900-950 rpm, anything below that and it wants to die after being revved. It will idle at normal rpm once its warm, but when you blip the throttle it will die. I still need to work on the cold start though, it wants to die right after I start it.

I've had cold start issues after having the DE-K put in my car. Do you have any more info about the re-learning procedure?

96sleeper- Your car sounds great. It doesn't seem to be as loud as mine was when I had my cutout open.

IceY2K1 Mar 20, 2006 02:56 PM

Sounds mean....when are you going to dyno?

I can't wait until someone SCs one of these....

more info on this? first I have heard of it.

I will try a week from Saturday, I will be out of town all this coming weekend.

I assure you it is loud. The little speaker on my camera doesn't do it justice. It sounds like an F1 car at WOT. Last time the dyno operator told me it was one of the loudest and coolest sounding cars he had ever heard.

Jason R Mar 20, 2006 04:48 PM

downloading it now. this better not make me want to do the swap until later on this year. :P

JAY25 Mar 20, 2006 05:54 PM

Matt congrats on your swap. You should have PMed me and I would have came over and dropped the engine and tranny back in.

That sounds amazing. I can't wait to see what kind of times/numbers you put down over the 3.0 setup

quicktimeperformance.com, it is in the test pipe.

Sorry the video is not that great, but it is all I could do quickly. I will do another one later that is better. I just wanted to show how a maxima can sound like a V8 at idle.

chillin014 Mar 21, 2006 05:05 AM

Alright, thanks.
Awesome man...how much did you pay for the motor?

I30tMikeD Mar 21, 2006 05:34 AM

$500 with free delivery for a 2k2 maxima engine with 24,000 miles. I wasn't planning on the swap, but I could not turn it down.

chillin014 Mar 21, 2006 06:26 AM

Man....your so lucky.
I need a hook up bad.

car-part.com

The engine was listed for $760, I called and asked about the harness since I needed the injector clips. He told me the harnesses were cut off, so I said no thanks. He called me back and asked if I would buy it for $500 as is. I said sure, and when I got it, the harness was still on the engine, it had just been cut on the main branch where it went through the firewall. So, I lucked out.
