00VI Starting Problem

hey guys.. i got everything working fine on my VI swap.. so i thought.. when its cold it starts up just fine.. but when its warmed up and i kill it and go to start it.. it keeps cranking and cranking and then after like 2-3 seconds it starts slowly trying to start until it finally cranks.. its almost like its spooling up in a way.. i know thats a lame comparison.. but thats the only way i can think to describe it.. it almost sounds like it doesnt have enough fuel or spark.. but once its cranked its fine runs like a charm no problems at all.. can anyone help me out with this.. i dont know where to start.. thanks in advance.. -Jason

Is it something with the plugs like you said? Did you check anything or still just waiting on an answer?

I FIGURED IT OUT!! Yes.. it is finally complete.. no CEL.. no rough idle.. no starting problem.. no nothing.. except pure raw power! i love it.. man this was a lot of headaches to get to this point.. and let me tell you i almost threw my hands up and gave up, but if not for my friend blake who helped me do the install i probably wouldnt have a VI right now.. let me tell you after i made a trip to texas this weekend and got to experience the top end power.. along with the low end.. i love this car even more.. and im sure i will love it more once i get my new rpm switch and can fine tune my power valve activation point.. if anybody needs help with issues/questions about the swap im sure i went through them all and will try to help out as much as possible.. thanks for everyones help on here!

i had been having my CEL on for the last week.. running 2 codes.. one for my MAP and another for my EGR (high/low flow).. well anyways after looking at my fsm i figured out that both of these sensors that control these codes work off of vacuum.. i remember not hooking them to a vacuum source on the last tear down.. so i hooked them up to vacuum, reset my ecu, and viola! problem solved.. normally these two sensors hooked up to a vacuum source located on the bottom of the 4th gen TB.. i hooked them up to nipple #2 (from the diagram on tatankos website)..

i also have the IACV plate.. but that has nothing to do with my vacuum issue.. the MAP sensor and the EGR solenoid valve both hook up to a spot on the 4th gen TB.. well since i am using the 5th gen ( i dont know if you guys are doing the same).. there is no spot to hook these two sensors up to for a vacuum source.. i tried just directly hooking them up to the UIM.. well i am still getting a CEL.. so i dont know what else to do.. where do you guys have the egr solenoid sensor hooked up at??

gtr - as long as you have all the sensors hooked up correctly (on IACV).. and your adapter plate isnt leaking.. you 'should' be fine.. although it may be restricted though, depending on what size nipple (most use 1/2") and/or location of nipple that you are using to connect it back to the UIM (should be directly behind TB).. hence the name Idle Air Control Valve.. what it does is at... idle (TB closed) it bypasses the butterfly and allows air to travel to the motor so the car will stay running.. so if restricted at any point then the motor may not be getting enough air.. either that or you just plainly have a faulty IACV..

Wow if you dont have a vacuum spot on the 5th TB for those hoses then I'm not sure how the PF TB is going to work out...

You know you can connect practically all the small 3/16" hoses to each other. Just use one of those 3 way fittings. It may require you to remove that spyder vacuum assembly.

are you doing this? and not throwing a code?? if so i guess you mean use the 3 way fitting and hook it up to the midpipe for the vacuum source?? see thats the problem.. i have tried different vacuum sources and still throw a code.. what TB are you using?

So all those 3/16 tubes instead of connecting them to the TB you connected them to each other? That produces enough vacuum?

I have a code for the MAP/ BARO sensor, that I cant figure out either....
I don't have any hoses hooked up underneath the 4th gen TB, and I'm pretty sure there never were any hooked up there on the stock setup either. There is just a nipple on there. I want to get this figured out! and get rid of that damned CEL.

no youre wrong if you notice.. right underneath that nipple on the bottom of the TB.. there is whats called a "vacuum gallery" (lamens = series of metal vacuum lines).. well if you look closely to one of those metal lines.. thats right underneath that nipple on the bottom of the TB.. they look like they would hook up.. well they do.. according to the FSM both of those sensors need a vacuum source located at the TB.. you fix that and you fix your CEL..

how to vacuum source 3/16" hoses

A - Vacuum for FPR goes to one barb fitting
B - Vacuum for barb fitting with "A" (has a little white something)
C - Outlet for "A" and "B"
1 - Outlet for "2" and 3"
2 - Connects to vacuum rail on right side to barb fitting
3 - Connects to vacuum rail closest to radiator on right hand side to barb fitting
F - Vacuum for EVAP Cnister Purge Control Valve. Connect to the middle
G - Vacuum for mid-pipe to Left side

"C" and "1" connect to "D"
"D" connects to upper intake manifold where pcv hose connects to.

Yea, I removed the vacuum gallery so I can use the 5th gen IACV. But as you can see they can all hook up to one. You don't need a vacuum to the TB. the most important is the evap canister which gets its own vacuum.

I know about the vacuum gallery, I was talking about the THROTTLE BODY, underneath the TB there is a nipple that is blocked off on mine, and I never put a rubber cover(lol) over that nipple to block it off.

Yeah is that nipple usually used? I was hoping to keep the vacuum gallery for easy use but judging by everyone, you guys have eliminated it. If I'm using the PF TB and the 4th IACV can I keep the vacuum gallery? These damn hoses are pissing me off. I cant get everything straight.

goldtooth - i know a solution to your problem.. i fixed mine yesterday.. with all the vacuum hoses down there i will have to take pics for you.. and show you how you need to hook everything up.. you didnt get rid of your vacuum gallery like speed racer though??

cdq2125- like i told goldtooth i have a solution to this vacuum mess.. dont take your vacuum gallery out.. let me get some pics of this stuff so i can explain it to you guys..

guys let me get pics of this.. i have a solution (if you did not remove your vacuum gallery).. it will get rid of a MAP/BARO and a EGR hi/low flow code..

lol, yup.. my EGR code comes back a day or so after I clear the codes.. I did notice today that a vacuum hose isnt connected down there which routed to the bottom of the 4G TB. gonna see if teeing it in fixes the prob..

Speed. I got my 00 rear cover and coils and noticed the coils I got dont fit the rear cover. Is it easier to hack the 4th cover and use the DE coils or use the DE coils in the 5th cover?

I had Vipervadim hack my 4th gen rear valve cover. What you want to do is grind down the coil bosses on 3 and 5 closest to the radiator. Leave the coil boss alone closest to the firewall. You will have a hole where it was cut. Now take a penny and cover it. Put some jb qwick over the penny and hole to secure it in place. Your going to do the same thing with the pcv.

Now you want to tap into the cover on the side with a 3/8" barb fitting. This will allow you to route the pcv by hooking a hose on one end than attaching the pcv and than another hose from the pcv to the UIM.

cdq2125 - the whole point of using the 5th gen valve cover is for the angled pcv fitting.. if you use the 5th gen the 4th gen coils wont fit.. and then you have to wire in the 5th gen coils in place of your 4th gen coils.. or you can also use the 4th gen cover.. and still use your 4th gen coils.. all you need to do is modify the bosses on your valve cover as shown:

and then to fix the pcv issue just go get a 90 degree elbow (forget what size) and run a inline pcv.. like i did..

Yeah I know all about the cutting the stock bosses. I'll have to do that since I have the wrong coils...Now I need to try and sell the cover to someone. I didnt want to use the 4th because I want to be able to jump back to stock if need be. But I might not have a choice. I'll see if I can find someone with a 4th cover to trade or sell. The PCV is out the front left correct? What is the barb nipple off the right side of the cover (not shown in that picture)?

if you cut the bosses as shown in that picture you will be able to put it back together as a complete 4th gen setup.. i had to put everything back stock on one of my attempts for the swap.. you will still have some of the threads left on the bosses.. yes the pcv is out of the front left corner.. barb nipple? if you are talking about that piece of metal tubing you can see on the top right hand side of the valve cover in that pic.. i beleive that is just part of that vacuum gallery over there.. there isnt anything else that hooks up to the valve cover over there..
