Not just that, but the turbulent boundary layer caused by the slightly rough surface can "lubricate" the port and reduces losses. Think golf *****. This is assuming the surface finish is just right, of course.

Aaron that looks great!
Question, Im not a big expert on headwork so please, LEARN ME!
Why is it that you do not want to mirror-finish the intake port?
I understand that yes for the exh side it avoids carbon build up and this helps airflow overall. However, why does the same idea not apply to the intake side? Does keeping it SLIGHTLY rough create a tumbling effect for better mixing with the fuel vapor prior to entering the chamber (which of course, is a good thing! lol)?

I didn't do it for laminar airflow reasons though. The intake manifold will still be polished since I haven't been able to prove that leaving a rough finish is better than a mirror smooth finish. The studies that have been conducted were unable to prove a noticeable difference between a rough and smooth finish. But that doesn't mean laminar airflow won't be beneficial. But it would take way too much time and money to find out the best uniformed bumpy finish for your engine.
The mild port work I am doing to this engine is sticking with the basics without using a flow bench.

How does fuel atomize in the intake with fuel injection? Thats a carburetor thing if Im not mistaken.
Aarron, looks like a huge undertaking. Nice work so far. I thought I had some wrench time under my belt with my b13. I have been working on it with some buddies for 3 years now off and on. Its rebuilt sr20de-t engine swap, gutted, full race, whatever you want to call it. I hacked the wiring like crazy too. That took way longer than building the motor. Wiring is more my thing really. I hope you stay sane while sorting though the new harness. I am really reluctant to pop open a tranny. That intimidates me. Its pretty crazy to see an engine all torn down sitting in the house. How does you family feel about that one? Is this car still streetable? Keep working at it. I cant wait to see the results.

On a direct injection motor you'd be correct, but with these systems you're still injecting fuel into the LIM. As such it still has to go through the intake port on the head.
#286
The fuel still touches the intake ports of the heads. So any help to atomize the fuel, is good. That is why I left the surface slightly rough and not polished.
The car was my daily driver even with the carpet and rear seats removed. But I plan to piece together my interior again one day.
Also, here's a video I just made that you guys might enjoy:

I don't really need one right now. I haven't done any testing with this engine in my car yet. I did modify the stock Tstat slightly so it opens a tad sooner. But that's it.
Once I have a chance to test this new engine out at the track, I will find out which temperature produces the most power and where it's most consistent. On my VE, it was around 160 degrees.

He's using a x-member to mount his engine. On the Altimas that those headers are meant for, there is none. The headers will fit no problem, but the ypipe runs RIGHT WHERE the x-member goes. This is why I had to make a custom ypipe for my setup (Im using the same exact headers as Aaron)

#307
since you will probably have to modify them to fit...seriously cut the collectors of the headers and make them a 2.5" collector and a true 2.5" y or more if you want.

A hardware kit is almost complete that will allow you to install the 4th gen Spacers on the 00vi. It also extends the EGR tube.
I think I want to get this motor in and running before I worry about something like this.

ok ok ok, i'm starting to get worried, cuz all i been hearing about is "oil burning" associated with the 3.5. are the majority of 3.5s like that, or just one or two?. im gonna be doing the swap, but wont have the money or time to replace rings, and do head work. Plus its my only car now so it cant be down for too long.

the ones that are having problems are the ones that ride them hard and put them up wet.
drive it like a race car, and you're going to have to work on it like one......
The oil consumption problem in the 350Z and G35Coupes was from a PCV issue sucking oil through the intake on high-rpm, no throttle occasions. it was NOT a piston/ring/whatever issue as people seem to jump to conclusions about. there's not a damn thing wrong with the engine- they just produce so much vacuum, it causes the PCV to suck oil out of the valve covers and into the intake.

I just don't want my 49K mile VQ35 to burn more oil than my old VE.

Update:
Just this past Wednesday, I had Surra_TT come over so we could test a new NWP product for the 5.5 gen. After we were done, I pulled out my complete wiring harness for this VQ35 swap project. I start going over it and labeling different connectors as I compared it to his 2K2 Maxima harness. Then, we quickly find out that something isn't right. There are just too many major differences between the connectors. So I said, "oh well, I'll figured it out" and we gave up since it was getting late. The harness did not seem like the right one though.
Then, Surra had an epiphany and sends me a text that says "Your harness is a 4cyl Altima!!!!!!". I open up the QR25DE 2K3 Altima FSM and start comparing wire colors and sure enough, he is correct! The stupid salvage yard said the harness came from a 2K3 Maxima 3.5, but it actually came from a 2K3 Altima 2.5L. I guess they couldn't tell the difference between an Altima and Maxima and a 2.5L and 3.5L.
But, I have a lead on an intact harness from another 5.5 gen auto. So I will post pics just as soon as I get this one.

I will be going with a UTEC and it will be all wired up with the harness before it's installed in the car. I will have the connectors labeled up before the UTEC wiring starts though. So at that point, I will be very sure how everything will be laid out and wired up in the vehicle.
As far as the dash harness, I pulled that myself from the same car I got my engine from. I just haven't gone through that yet and started pruning it. Right now, I'm not sure which connectors I need to keep. But I will figure all that out later.
