Miami's Turn for a Build

What led to this- I got tired of the problems with boost (oil leaks, boost leaks, ground clearance[this was not bad, but just added to it], endless troubleshooting, arg!). Turbo'ing a car that is not turbo from factory (as I was aware) takes a lot of attention. Maybe I'm getting older and my priorities are changing from wasting money and time on my car that could be used towards looking for a house. At this point I just want a reliable car that wont give me problems, but is still fun to drive... after being boosted you KNOW I could not just go back to All-Motor on a stock engine!

Best of Last NA- Nov '07
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d4...tVsPipeSAE.jpg
Mods at the time were...
SSIM, Midpipe-Less Intake, 3" MAF, 16v Ignition (plugs gapped to .049), Full-headers, manual cutout (open and closed respectively on the graph [when closed it ran through a WSP 2.5" catback with dynomax muffler]), SAFC-1 tuning with FP set to 55psi, UDP, Int Cam Adapters set to StephenMax's default

New Since then- Currently
* Custom 3" Catback into a 3" Dynomax Muffler and Ubber sexiness Borla tip
* Greddy E-Manage Blue (carried over from the boost days). Will be replaced by an EU when some parts are sold and the Credit Cards are paid off :wall:

The EB was worth every penny. My tune is much smoother and consistent than the AFC. I cant wait until I can take full advantage of my setup with an EU's extended rev-limiter and timing-advance capabilities.

The 3" catback DOES indeed help at the top end! Butt dyno from 2 different drivers say my car feels better at top end now with this catback than with the previous 2.5"er. This confirms the findings of a fellow orger here that on a 3.5 with SSIM, there is power to be gained out of a 3" catback.

Nice! i hope you get good numbers. keep us up dated on your progress.

95BLKMAX 10-22-2008 10:47 AM

I will. Every day I'll have pictures and stuff to post up as I go. Problem is that the weather is NOT supposed to be good the next few days, so it should make it interesting.

Tonight's To-Do List
- Drain Oil and Coolant
- Remove Upper IM
- Remove Battery and Accessories
- Remove Cross-Member

This is of course, assuming the weather allows, :wall:

chillin014 10-22-2008 11:27 AM

IIRC you said your doing this motor in-car, right? You know I'll be following this! you better take lots of pics.

and yo whats up with that short cam?? I dont remember one being odd like that

yes sir, engine in the car. No hoist to pull it out so I'm doing it in the car (just as I did for my HG replacement).

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d4...f/IMG00450.jpg

is this picture better? lol

#1- RH Int Cam
#2- LH Int Cam
#3- RH Exh Cam
#5- LH Exh Cam

I too freaked out about it when I saw it on the picture, but once you line it up it does make more sense lol

Does this comment mean I was right about turbos taking too much time and effort? :D

I like what your plans are for the 3.5. Just add headers to your list... Now you need to spray it.

Good luck with it....

I've had the headers on since Sep 07 Grey ;). And yes you were right! :wall: If I get bored of this, I'll just 100shot it. MAYBE I'll take your advice after so long :goofy:

chillin014 10-22-2008 01:28 PM

so the cam really IS the shortest, but yeah it makes more sense in the second pic haha. I still didnt realize they were like that.

3" catback (along with a 3" cat) and we saw some good gains on Merlyn's car. 11whp/15wtq (peak), I believe. Much better than that overall though.

He was making 250/244 with just the Cattman 3" catback, custom 3" high flow cat, Cattman gen 2 headers and Y, and a Berk intake. So basically, I/H/E, no tuning or SSIM.

How much are you looking to get out of this setup? After you're all done, you should boost it :wall:

The heads on the VQs aren't the same length, IIRC it's the right head that's longer. A bit odd the first time you see it, but that's Nissan for you.

One head has to be longer. They couldn't both sit flush with the inner timing cover otherwise. Ditto the cams.

Aaron92SE 10-22-2008 02:16 PM

Very nice! I hope to be posting pics of my cams soon.

Yeah, yeah, yeah spray it !

Seriously, with the mods you already have in place, and a cammed 3.5, adding nitrous would be easy for you to do. But you know that.... that combination could be brutal. and you too could look like this at the strip:

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f2..._Grey99max.jpg

Then you could put other guys with a RMT in their place! Heh....

:D

KRRZ350 10-22-2008 07:11 PM

Very sexy graph, if you could please e-mail me the runfiles to Kevgoods@hotmail.com it would be much appreciated.

And yes, spray is unreal, after adding it on my practically stock '95, when I'm hitting that button it blows the doors off my 4.5 gen I30

I gotta know - how do you play that hidden nitrous system? Oh, I forget, no talking about street racing in here... :(

liqidvenom 10-23-2008 06:48 PM

good luck on your build.

should i help you find your s/c to add to this setup?

gtr_rider 10-23-2008 07:43 PM

one step at a time please lol. (im not saying no to it lol, cus a s/c IS much more user-friendly than turbo, but the economy only allows for so much at a time) lol

maxpeed96plat. 10-24-2008 12:06 AM

If you need a hand PM me, I'll drive down there if I'm off from work.

Kevlo911 10-24-2008 06:29 AM

Can I has? Tanks :)

95BLKMAX 10-24-2008 09:42 PM

No pics yet, but nothing spectacular got done tonite. I worked on it from about 8pm to 1150ish.
*drained coolant and oil

*Removed...
intake manifold
battery
belts and all accessories
y-pipe
front valve cover
thermostat housing

I could not get as much work done as I planned to. I was limited to working with a crappy little work lamp that.... lets just say it gets the job done, lol. Tomorrow in daylight I'll work alot faster, especially now that the crap-work has been taken care of.

Tomorrow I will take pics at my break-time (noon). I'll run some errands and then post up pictures of the progress done that far.

But so far, so good :sprint:

JonBlz 10-24-2008 09:50 PM

nice buddy cant wait to see the updates

95BLKMAX 10-24-2008 11:16 PM

When it's all said and done, with the parts going on now, the EU that is still pending, and the addition of a cutout, I'm setting my sights on 285-290whp to keep things conservative. I know Dandy squeezed 270 out of a DEK, I SHOULD be able to get alot more than 290whp equivalently. However, I still dont know how the IM is going to like those high revs. Plus, I would be perfectly happy with 285whp as long as it has a broad TQ curve with PLENTY of area under it. It would be nice lol

Macof2003 10-24-2008 11:28 PM

strong build in the making.... good luck homie

Tippy Toes 10-24-2008 11:57 PM

Yeah let us get some pics of what you're doing. Have fun and keep us posted.

l3ftonm3 10-25-2008 04:00 AM

No phenolic spacers? or did you just not list them.

95BLKMAX 10-25-2008 06:29 AM

Thanks Mac. Tippy Toes, pics will come early this afternoon. l3ftonm3 , no sir, no spacers yet. But they ARE on the list of things to get done. I'm actually going to do a before and after of the spacers alone, so I may be doing them after the EU

chillin014 10-25-2008 06:37 AM

**** is going to be a BEAST! Finally someone is going to really squeeze the power out on a mild build.

95BLKMAX 10-25-2008 01:58 PM

ok, weather sucks.... and the rig I tried to do my drilling does not work quite as expected. Soooo, I need to find a drill press (blah....)

Anywho, this is where it's at so far...

chillin014 10-25-2008 02:30 PM

damnit get a real camera lol. What are you trying to drill? I have a drill press but...that does you no good.

95BLKMAX 10-25-2008 05:34 PM

so today,
X-member, lower oil pan, rear valve cover= off... then came the storms

So while in the garage along with Superman305, we attempted to drill my sprockets... yea the rig to hold it all together didnt work, s0000 that's going to have to wait until monday to do it with a drill press.

While in the garage though, he polished up my new outer timing cover, and we painted my plastic valve covers in Aluminum... when this is all put back together its going to look amazing.

Today there was an 80% chance of precipitation, in my area we even had severe weather alerts. Tomorrow the chance goes down to 60%... not much but we'll see how that actually affects the weather in my specific area. Let's see how much I can get done tomorrow!

essential1 10-25-2008 08:40 PM

Good luck with it bro.

LIES!!!!

anyways, upper oil pan, both timing covers (of course the timing equipment) and the stock cams are off.

I am going to start on the valve springs right now. This should be interesting... (pix later)

Not doing it alone lol. Its a team effort EXCEPT for the valve springs and most likely the ARP rod bolts. Everything else however is a lot easier to do with a friend or two (one to help out, the other to supervise that the beer stays cold LOL).

aaaaite!!! So the report for today goes...
Removed-
- upper oil pan
- both timing covers (of course the timing equipment)
- stock camshafts

Swapped the valve springs and added a valve seat to Cylinders #4 and #6 (couldn't keep going, too tired at the end of the day)

He wasn't kidding either that motor was lose. Sometimes just taking off simple bolts the motor would move. Thats SW engineering at its best.
