2 15's in a maxima trunk

Will a box for 2 15" subs fit int he maxima's trunk NO PROBLEMS or will I have to just settle for 2 12" subs?

BBaker025 Jul 23, 2002 01:44 PM

Yep, I had 2 kicker 15in subs in a box, Im in the middle of making a customized box tho.

It depends on the volume the subs require to run in there optimal range, which is directly related to things like excursion.

In all honesty, those 15's are probably gonna take up atleast 40% of your trunk. My one JBL 15" took up about 40%.

I have space between the box and the sides of the trunk, and about 1.5' from the back of the box to the back of the trunk. My box is about 5.5 cubic feet of volume btw. This is already a compromise, as optimal for this sub is about 7. Which is why I had to tune the port accordingly.

What kind of music do you listen to? How big do you really want to go?

jmax Jul 23, 2002 02:40 PM

And how much are you willing to pay for the sub, and box materials. For example, epoxy resin and carbon fiber could save you box volume, but will run you a few hundred or more in materials. Slightly less expensive would be baltic birch plywood, or similar material that will allow 3/4 inch thick walls.

why do you want two 15's ? theres no need for that much bass unless you are into competitions. to get good sq and spl in 2 15's you will have to fork over a lot of money. why not just get 2 10'2 or 12's ?

Well I'm very new to gettin sound systems and stuff, And I want to save and get something really good that bumps pretty hard and from asking people everyone told me 2 15's is the way to go, can I get just as good quality w/ 2 12's? I listen mostly to rap, and as you all know some rap songs have some killer bass notes, I just really want a GOOD system that bumps Pretty HARD but as you say I'm not looking for any competition's? I really have no Idea where to start w/ this stuff, I mean I didn't even know that the materials the box was made of effected sound?

Triple8Sol Jul 23, 2002 05:45 PM

I would go with 2 or 3 10"s that bump. Like some Rockford Power HX2's or JL W7's.

jmax Jul 23, 2002 06:53 PM

If you just want bump, and SQ is not a concern as you listen to a lot of rap, then the kicker L7 is probably the biggest bang for your buck in a budget system, or the cheaper L5. A single sealed 12 inch DA MacDaddy can rattle the windows in my house, from my maxima's trunk. And this is in a non-optimal enclosure. Positioned in a very poor location, the center of the trunk.

Mine fit...;)

This might sound stupid,(it is) but it's more for bragging rights. I don't play my system near as loud as it can go, but it's nice to know that it can get very loud just incase I need it to.

loudmaxima Jul 23, 2002 07:31 PM

why bother doin 15s if youre not going to port them?

mb1 Jul 23, 2002 07:54 PM

I didn't want to mess with the whole porting thing. Plus I like to have at least some trunk space, and I like my bass nice and tight.

jmax Jul 23, 2002 08:29 PM

Nice and tight can be had with a single 8" driver. It's just a matter of how much earth shakeing power you want. And the amount of real estate and dough you are willing to part with.

H.N.I.C.95 Jul 24, 2002 05:40 AM

Hope you are ready for xtreme bass and a lot off loose screws. and oh trunk rattle. But at least you will get a half inch drop in the back.

skeelo34 Jul 24, 2002 08:08 AM

Get two 12' shivas. 125 each. Specs @ adireaudio.com & for sale at ampmanaudio.com. Ask meccanoble how mine sound....hehe. Used to have my trunk flex over an inch.... My friend think they hit harder than his L7's titanium 12's.

kingrukus Jul 24, 2002 09:25 AM

How big of a box do you have for your 2 12 shivas? I really like those subs, but it seems as if they need a lot of space....also can they be wired down to a 2 or 1 ohm mono load?

Shoot, I think I have at least an inch drop in back. And don't have everything installed.

blizz20oma Jul 24, 2002 01:14 PM

Hehe...stock max's practically have an sedany-inch drop/sag in back as is :)

Aww, you guys are persuading him into 12s? Just think of what the ghetto-fabulous boys will have to say...."Aww, deys ain' 15s?? Sheeeit....y'all ain' got NUTHIN.." :D

liquidfire - go to some shops and listen to some demos. You sound like a big SPL fan, but you can get high amounts of SPL without sacrificing too much SQ with the right subs. From what I've heard Brahmas can provide both well, and in that case, 12s would probably be fine. Sh1t, probably one Brahma 12" with a nice amp would do you straight.

skeelo34 Jul 24, 2002 01:54 PM

I agree brahmas are sweet, for 360 lol. I have my shivas in a 3.3 cuft box that i built myself. They sound very tight. Generally they recommend b/w 1.25 & 1.5 per shiva, but i wanted sq. 2.5 stuffed with polyfill should sound really good too. I have it being pushed by a brax x2000 amp. I'll take a picture one day. Btw, one brahma will not outpound 2 shivas, but will take a smaller box and probably have a little better sq. The two shivas i have are wired into 2 ohms. Each coil on the shiva is 8 ohms, so two coils in parallel make it 4 ohms and 2 shivas in parallel make it 2 ohms. I doubt you can find a better sounding box for this of a cheap price. I'm planning to sell mine, If i get 325 I'll sell it. I'm planning to move onto one 15" brahma.
