Aftermarket HU's with 6 disc CD changer
 

I've been doing alil sifting through crutchfield (not to buy, but to get a rough idea) and wanted to know if there are any good models out there to look for in replace of the stock 6 disc CD-Changer bose I have now. Any good recommendations??

u can't just plug and play a different cd changer unless it specifically has wiring or some sort of an adaptor for a nissan maxima specific bose, is there any particular reason u want to replace ur stock cd changer?

Well, here's the thing: I was originally looking to upgrade only certain components of my system and from what I was told, if you're gonna replace something, you may as well go the whole 9 yards. Now how true that is, I wouldn't know because I'm a newbie when it comes to car audio and those guys at the stereo shop and circuit city were trying to pawn off the sale on me. :mad:


Honestly, I'd rather not have to replace the stock bose HU if I don't have to because I like the 6 CD-Changer option. The more I think about it, I really just wanna replace the front and rear speakers with maybe something Infiniti based (i.e component system in front, and maybe something 3-way for the rear) and get (I guess) a multi-channel amp to power those. Some members here have the basslink and are pretty happy with it, so that was part of the option also.

So in effect, maybe you can help me with this, but....would I need a new HU? :confused: And would my current stock bose sub be able to be hooked up with the rest of the setup??

Here is my setup, it works pretty well, but I'm getting a new HU -
stock bose HU
front stock bose speakers
rear infinitys
alpine 5 channel amp
12" ported rockford fosgate


It sounds pretty good, But all the bose min-amps had to be by-passed (POS' going out anyway..), but the bose hu doedn't output power...
It can be done! (I'm upgrading peice by peice)

if u get a 5 channel amp, and get it set up, run it to the speakers in front and back, and use the sub out on the amp to power the sub, u could in effect still use the bose HU

yeah this is the problem with the Bose....you like the 6CD (I do also) you want to keep it, but you want more power and sound....its catch 22.....

you ultimately (from speaking to MANY .org members) need to replace it all, because all of it lacks somewhere in the chain of things...the HU lacks power and sound and the speakers lack the same... you can't run aftermarket speakers on the Bose HU without adding amps...

its a very costly upgrade...

It really sux that you can't do the one-zee-two-zee setup where you "gradually" add on stuff to it. And of course, had I not opted for the Bose system to begin with, that probably would've been one less option package minus a few convienent options. Like you said, a catch 22.

I've been quoted at around a $1K for upgrade, and that was just Circuit City. I can only imagine what the local stereo shop wants.

I don't know if the Bose HU will power speakers directly or is only preamp level out, but this doesn't really matter. If it will power speakers directly (as my non-Bose stock HU does), I replaced the four speakers and tweeters with Infinity Reference Series. These speakers, unlike the Kappa series, are rather efficient (and significantly less expensive) and work well with the limited power of the HU. Added a Basslink to the trunk. Total cost (not including shipping and I did the install) was $400 and sounds much better than the Bose system. If you need an amp for the main speakers it should be able to connect to the Bose HU's preamp outputs but I'm not sure about the signal levels. The Bose system has some weird things about it.
