is this an ideal setup for a car?

low range (subs) in the trunk, midrange speakers in the rear deck, and highs in the front (w/ component system). I'm just a little confused about this...thanks.

Ideally, you want everything up front. But since you can't fit subs up front easily, they go into the trunk. You can use some low-powered mids for rearfill if you want (I do), but make sure that you have plenty of midbass up front. Up-front midbass is the difference between crappy systems and good systems.

i forgot to tell you, Micah95GLE, i love your car! it looks so nice...

but yes, i'm planning on getting midbass speakers. you said low powered? does that mean i could just power them with my decent HU? it's only 40wX4...but is that good enough?

i guess my budget will allow me only to get a 4 channel amp to power the component set in the front...and power the 1 infinity perfect 12 i'm planning to get. and then yeah, the HU power the midbass in the rears. does that sound decent?

I recommend getting some inexpensive coaxials for rearfill and powering them with the HU (try filtering the low frequencies out of the rears; I have mine highpassed at 170Hz). Make sure that your mids up front are capable of strong midbass (spend more money on the fronts). The lower you can run your midbass up front, the better you can blend the sub with the front stage.

Spend the money on the front speakers, Give them lots of power. The doors will accomodate a very large 6 1/2 in. speaker. Get the best one you can afford.

In the rear the thing you want to turn down is the highs, not the mids and lows. the highs are what your ears use for direction and you don't want your ears to think the sound is coming from the back of the car. The mids in those speakers will blend with the subs.

Nah, too much midbass in the back accentuates the sub being in the back. That makes for sloppy bass, fading front to back between the different frequencies.

I think you you both are right, Redmax and Micah. The rear speakers should be used as rear fill and should play in the mid-range / mid-bass range. However as Micah said, too much into the mid-bass range and your ears will be drawn towards the rear of the car for the source of the bass. They should definitely be low power though. A lot of people don't even run rears. Just complicates matter too much. It's up to you, but low power and not too much of the lower or upper frequencies is the setup that you should shoot for.
