New Trunk Sound Setup, What'd Ya Think?

I wanted to add some more bass to the stock bose, but hated the idea of loosing too much trunk space and blocking the ski-pass. So I finally designed and built a box (my first one), that I had in mind for a while. It fits flush to the back of the seat, the middle cutout fits the existing hole exactly. It is only about 14 inches deep and brings extra bass inside when the armrest is down.
What do you guys think?

Thanks for the props.
As far as the size, they are perfect volume - .75 cubic foot per each chamber. Those are 10" Infinity Reference.

as far as construction:

Most likely I will be selling this one on e-bay very soon. I am gonna make 2 other designs that I have in mind. I love this one and it wangs solid, but I got a garage with all the necessary tools (table saw, router, jig, etc, etc.), so it would be a shame to make just one and quit. So if anyone wants this one, make me an offer.

metallic97gxe Jul 23, 2004 04:33 AM

very nice work...

endus Jul 23, 2004 06:34 AM

Wow great work dude! I ahve a JL stealthbox because I don't want to give up a lot of trunk space or the pass through, but this is a great way to mount 2 subs rather than just one. I might have to do this myself some day. Really really good job!

suli80 Jul 23, 2004 07:56 AM

looks tight man!

drunkenmunky23 Jul 23, 2004 08:52 AM

thats damn good for ur first one...great job

ny96max Jul 23, 2004 09:12 AM

i would go patent that design and sell the blue prints for it....hehe!

good job though ;)

Very nice...... I'd definitely go for a design like this. However, how does it sound? What kind of music do you usually listen to? At what frequency range do your subs play at?

Jason R Jul 23, 2004 11:57 AM

looks really good. looks like to much work for me when I take everything out of my trunk to go to the track though. but it looks real good.

It sounds great! I usually listen to hip-hop, house, trance, rave, funk, and whatever else has a good beat.
Speakers are 10" Infinity Reference, with 225 or 250 (I am can't remember) Watts RMS each. Amp is Alpine V-series pushing 175 Watts RMS to each sub. The combo peaks out at about 700-1000 Watts. Box is the exact size specified in Infinity's instructions: .75 cu. ft. with some poly-fill in each chamber, so it performs as if it was a bit larger. As far as frequency, I am still playing with the controls, but I think the filter is set at about 100hz at this time.
Some tunes like the Lil John's CD have the prolonged bass and deeply shake the whole cabin, and some like most Electronica have the quick repeated, snapping bass(which I like a lot) that just pierces right through you.
What I was surprised at is how well Maxima's trunk muffles the sound. While it hits hard enough to blurr the outside mirrors, standing outside (with windows rolled up) you can hear some, but not all that much from more than 10 ft.

slickrick Jul 23, 2004 01:15 PM

do you make custom sealed boxes for orgers cheap???!!! i could possibly use a new sealed box. nice setup btw.

DR-Max Jul 23, 2004 02:07 PM

COool!!! I listen to the same types of music.

How do the Bose speakers hold up? Do they get drowned out by your subs? At higher SPL's, like 3/4 to max on the volume control, do the mids and highs start getting muddy in sound? I have been contemplating on doing this, stock Bose system + sub & amp. But I wasn't sure how they would work together. The next alternative would be to scrap the Bose system totally and go for a bi-amplified system.

I actually have a Pioneer deck using an adapter so that I can still use the stock Bose amplified speakers. The headunit has high-pass filtering so that I can tailor the sound more. Plus it's got a parametric eq settings built-in. It also has a separate sub pre-out and low pass filtering section which lets me define bass frequency cut-offs and levels. It's a pretty old headunit but very functional still.

that looks pretty good man. nice and clean :)

Rider69 Jul 24, 2004 07:25 AM

Looks good. Not a big fan of Infinity but if it sounds great that is all that matters. I like how you kept the pass through

bluman3 Sep 3, 2004 10:09 PM

do you have the dimensions?

I like it. You should make more and sell them. And make that center hole some ports for the subs too!

Maxtank Sep 4, 2004 12:30 PM

Very nice. Good job keeping the pass-thru for the skis.

skeelo34 Sep 6, 2004 08:30 AM

What is the internal volume for that box?

This why even scanning through the posts will elimante a few questions.

That's tight though maciek. And since I don't ski, I'd mount the amp in the middle with either mirrors, accent lights, or both. Probably do both. Mount the amp on the top, put mirrors on the sides and bottom. Then use the string accent lights around the opening.

WildmanAL Sep 7, 2004 05:42 PM

Pretty good. I just finished my trunk aswell.
