well, might as well ask a sub question while I'm at it

Now that I am replacing the head unit, but probably keeping Bose speakers (for now), I guess I'll just ask about subs. I did several searches and there are llimited responses on this topic - the free-air sub.

If I replace the Bose sub, I want to replace it with something that will go in the same place. I frequently have my trunk jam-packed with ski gear, outdoor gear, home depot stuff, lumber, whatever, so I can't sacrifice ANY space at all, and certainly can't block the folding seats at all. I don't want to deal with taking out a box (or even bass tube/basslink), even when it's easy. Would just like a sub in the stock location. Keep in mind, I'm not going for crazy loud bass if I do this...just some nice background bass....

Has anyone yet determined if there is a good 8" free-air sub out there? If so, what sub is it, and what amp would you personally run with it? The only one I've seen suggested is a Kicker Comp....

Please, don't bother suggesting boxes or anything...I'm only asking about free-air boxes. If I can't find a good free-air setup, I will just keep the stock Sub.....

look up infinity basslink, this is a single sub built in a small box...

Alot of people run this...if fits quite nicley in the space between the dier-side rear wheel well and the back of the trunk.

AscendantMax Mar 15, 2005 03:53 PM

he says he doesn't want anything back there, not even the basslink. i'd look into some kicker free-air subs. my uncle is running one freeair through the stock location on his 97 avalon, and it provides some decent low end extension. it doens't get booming loud though.

irish44j Mar 15, 2005 03:54 PM

yeah, I've seen/heard the basslink in maximas, but would still rather stick with stock location......the trunk width comes in handy for alot of the stuff I carry (ski poles, tents, folding chairs, lumber, etc...) and would rather not take it up. Basslink sounds nice, and is my "fallback" option I suppose...

Metal Maxima Mar 15, 2005 03:55 PM

Well, it'd require a bit more work, BUT...

Have you considered running the coaxes w/ kick pods? This would leave you room in the OEM slots for something tasty like the Adire Audio Extremis...mmm...XBL2 engine...

I'm so stupid :bonk: :tardsmash

u might want to reconsider. i have it in my 02 and it takes up so little room. i like you put so much crap in the truck, but is 12" and maybe 6-7" wide. any other option is more $$$ and will NOT sound as good as a basslink

Irish, you should appreciate this..i bought the bungie cords at home depot! :woot:

MannyNJ2k2max Mar 15, 2005 04:33 PM

look into Alumapro free air, and kicker comp - there has been a few people that have built the enclosure under the rear deck for the sub as well

irish44j Mar 15, 2005 06:13 PM

thanks guys, I will look into them.

By the way, for those who were following my other threads, I got a head unit tonight. Jason (TAPOUT) hooked me with a great deal on an Alpine CDA-9835 from last year

irish44j Mar 15, 2005 07:38 PM

appreciate the taunts/offers, but this is it for the time being! I'll worry about more audio later, after auto-x season is over....need to do a little more suspension work before more audio stuff......priorities....

AscendantMax Mar 15, 2005 07:42 PM

ah gotcha, good luck with the autox

show 'em what a 4 door family car can do :D

Can you please explain why an infinite baffle install will not sound as good as a basslink? The concept is EXACTLY the same as building an IB sub in your home. You might want to check out the Cult of the Infinitely Baffled for more details.

irish44j,
I've already discussed 8" subs in an IB configuration here.
