4 12's in trunk?

I'm adding 2 12 inch subs and another amp to my system. This is in a 3rd gen maxima. Does anyone have pics of custom boxes made for this kind of setup?
After I get this done I will have
4 subs-- 2 12" kicker competition subs,1 12" audiobahn, 1 12" Ma audio
2 amps--Kicker IX406 (for 2 subs and 4 speakers in the passenger area) 540 watt SPL amp

I know some of this stuff seams cheap but they work long and and beat hard
Any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated.

AscendantMax Apr 4, 2005 09:07 PM

i would not suggest mixing different subs in one common setup. each sub does not perform like the rest, and any SQ would suffer. i'd sell the audiobahn, and the MA audio to get 2 more kicker comps just to match things up. my $.02

:sprint: word life sun.

2 Da Max Apr 4, 2005 09:31 PM

yes plus the kickers have nice spl or you could sellall and get one pounding sub, right Gordon

AscendantMax Apr 4, 2005 09:39 PM

haha i don't know, four 12" in a right enclosure would get rediculously loud :)

but yeah, one pounding sub would work as well ;)

slickrick Apr 4, 2005 09:50 PM

4 12's are sick even if they are low end subs...

In this case I would have to say Sick as in Very distasteful.

SEmy2K2go Apr 4, 2005 10:01 PM

4 12" subs? What other equipment do you have with your setup? All bass and no mids/highs makes music very boring.

.............

MacAlert Apr 5, 2005 06:03 AM

And you need 4 subs because........?

MannyNJ2k2max Apr 5, 2005 06:36 AM

I'd lean to QUAD 10's....should be able to squeeze them in there quite nicely and get ridiculously loud as well

kcidmil Apr 5, 2005 07:34 AM

Heck I can see a few different setups. It's all in how you want it to look. I could draw you up a few designs... but I don't have a scanner where I'm at now.

heres my thoughts:
1. right now i am VERY confident in my front stage. in addition im very confident in my 4 channel amp, that has enough capacity to power my fronts very well. also, it has plenty of additional capacity to power the rears (if i get them)
2. i do have passengers to worry about on occasion. if i were to get rears, they would go in the doors and they would definitely be faded way down to emulate the 'front stage', so that they are not mains, but truly just 'fill'. your points regarding that are surely taken.
3. it is true that i am creating a system for me, and no one else, which is why i chose a nice set of comps for clarity, and to rock out on my own at any volume level.
4. im not sure however if i have the capability to tune just a set of fronts well enough to compensate for the lack of rears, plus i prefer more of a surround sound type of atmosphere, to truly get lost in my music rather than a stagefront emulation.

a few questions -
plurco - have u ever heard rear fill in the rear doors of a 5th gen? what were your thoughts in comparison to the 4th gen rear deck?
manny - when we listened to your system on friday, did u have rears? i didnt take a notice.

gentleman, i'd like to thank you for your honest opinions. i am still on the fence whether to get rears or not, mainly because i am simply very curious to explore this notion that there is no need for rear fill, but manny rest assure if i get em, they'll match my fronts. i'm also glad that I could start a discussion about true audiophile knowledge and opinions vs. "hey guys check it out i have 3463409 12' subs in my trunk!" please continue to discuss if i've missed anything.

again, thank you

I agree with seeling the entire thing and getting 2 uber subs. 12's or 15's. You can get very close to your desired output and impact with a pair of quality drivers in a properly engineered ported box. I had three Kicker solobarics in my 3rd gen. Three seperate sealed enclosures. My pair of TDX's get muuuuch louder than the three did due to the ported box. The three did 133db and the 2 TDX's do 144db. You can do the math there. This is just a suggestion. This would be my choice based upon several years of expereince with the wrong setups.

slickrick Apr 5, 2005 09:29 AM

i like the idea of 4 10's... instead of 2 super subs which will tally in at around 80lbs try some 10's that are roughly 15lbs each and seal them. thus you will save weight on the subs and the weight of the box and would be punchy as hell doing it.

I got a friend with 4 10w0s. They're in a 93 chrysler new yorker 5th avenue he put them in a fiberglass box. They're driven by one amp and that thing pounds. Were your solobarics L5 or L7? I want to put two L5s in a sealed box. Why did you have three seperate boxes? If I get lazy and decide to not cut my circle box can you sell me your square ones?

AscendantMax Apr 5, 2005 02:12 PM

blah, be different. make a wall of 8's. ;)

kpr10is Apr 5, 2005 02:59 PM

lol A guy who used to work at Circuit with me had a wall of 8 8's in his blazer, the red ones from walmart, and he glassed a 9th one into the console. Why? I dont know, maybe because he put all that together for like $100?

My first car was my dads old 1990 BMW 525i. I put 4 Kicker comp 12s in there. Yes it got loud but not as loud as I had hoped for three reasons: one because i was a newb, two because the boxes werent to spec due to fitting 4 subs in there, and three because the bmw's have the rear firewall. But hindsight...I was 16 and it was one of my first setups, what did i expect? The money couldve been put to better use, like better subs to keep up with the Type R mids and highs I had in that car. But oh well, live and learn.

AscendantMax Apr 5, 2005 03:04 PM

bmw's have a rear firewall??? no wonder the bass output is crap in my cousin's car. i installed my old 10s in there and it sounds very muffled.

Conrad283 Apr 5, 2005 03:20 PM

What would the point of 4 subs be? Are you going to be entering car shows or something?

Yup, I had a fold down armrest in the middle that was as wide as the rear middle seat and as deep as the back of the seat, I cut the rear firewall behind it to get a little more sound, and Id ride with the armrest down, the only thing covering the hole was the factory leather and factory velcro that held it on. But yeah its still muffled.

HAHA, who would want to do something like that? :wavey:

MacAlert Apr 5, 2005 08:15 PM

And I will ask again.....what is the point having 4 subs?

AscendantMax Apr 5, 2005 08:20 PM

so he has more than 1? :gotme: :p

looks like 'the more the better' mentallity is at work here

2 Da Max Apr 5, 2005 08:23 PM

i wish i had four subs, i sell them and paint my car

AscendantMax Apr 5, 2005 08:24 PM

if i had 3 extra subs, i'll sell them so i can pay my freaking book fees. this semester alone cost me $600 in books. :mecry:

slickrick Apr 6, 2005 12:43 AM

^^books...who uses those things? anyway i see nothing wrong with 4 12's...that is if i had a Navi or something similar.

chinaonnitrous1 Apr 6, 2005 01:57 AM

Id dump them all and pick up A brahama 15...or some XXX 12's.

kcidmil Apr 6, 2005 06:39 AM

Hey there's nothing wrong with having 4 subs... it keeps the company in business and food on people's tables... other than his own that is...

I'd think of 2 other subs to get besides those 2. Maybe some memphis M-class... Obvisiouly you don't plan on using your trunk anymore. So how about the LSV 15" or if you had enough room the LSV 18"x3 Of course, you'll need something to run them all their MOJO amp

Of course, that's a lot of money. I'd keep the subs matching.

I had four of the RF Hx2 12" woofers in my 3rd Gen.. Each pair was being pushed by a 225.2..

Yeah we cut a port in the rear deck probably 8 x 20 and made a cloth grill to cover it up. The system put out some good numbers, but as mentioned above one or two subs these days, in a properly tuned box can yield numbers equal or above a multi sub setup. I am hitting close to the same numbers with my two MTX 9512s. Thanks for the compliments.

AscendantMax Apr 6, 2005 09:08 AM

i miss the look of old school RF amps :(

Just curious what kinda numbers were you getting.

My best score with the 3rd gen was a 145.2db @ a DB Dragracing event.. Current best with the 5th gen is 142.1db @ a Tweeter SLAP show event (only had my current system metered once)

90MAXGMG Apr 6, 2005 09:51 AM

I'm not putting those 4 12's in the trunk now...I'm selling everything...except the amp
