Hey guys, I have a question about dual voice coils and a problem I'm having.

Hey everyone, I'll get straight to the point.

I recently bought a single 12" enclosure off a friend for $10, and he also threw in a non-functional 12" MTX sub. I tried the sub out, and noticed it has dual voice coils. My question concerning dual voice coils, since I never had any experience using it before, but how do you use them? Are you supposed to use external crossovers to split up the highs and lows? For example, on my Infinity kappa component speakers, they are all supplied crossovers and on the speaker themselves there are two pairs of speaker connections. Is this the same idea on the MTX sub I have?

Also another thing is, whenever I hook up the speaker using any type of sound source (my boombox, my home theater system, my home reciever unit), and turn up the volume on the unit with the sub connected (using one connection), the sound source shuts off. Does this normally occur when you wire the sub wrong, like just using one connection versus two? Also the little wires that are attached to the prongs which attach to the speaker wire are all shredded apart, like the little strands of wires are pointed out in several different directions, could this be creating a short? Regardless I am going to tape down all the strands so they don't touch each other or any bare metal. But my main concern is how are you supposed to use dual voice coil subwoofers, are they the same as any other speaker? Do I just have to make sure all the connections on the sub itself is connected to something? HELP ME!!
