HU won't power up?

1990 Maxima SE w/ stock bose
Trying to remove the bose system for an aftermarket system.

Well I have a Panasonic CQ-C3300U deck; soldered/shrinked all the wires, and there isn't any power. I'll take some pictures tomorrow when it is daytime, but this has me at a complete lost. I made sure the HU's wires and the wire harness's wires are all lined up to the correct ones and have a solid connection to each other.

Oh just to add now, it seems when the car engine is running, the "Source" button will blink once every now and then, so I at least know it is getting some power from somewhere. Could the 15 fuse be the problem here? or...?

nismos14 Dec 28, 2005 08:29 PM

Replace the audio fuse under the hood and put it back in, see if that fixes it/resets it.

Pearl96Max Dec 28, 2005 09:58 PM

Where did you ground the unit?

Any suggestions?
What would it mean that the source/power button is blinking red every once in awhile?

Pearl96Max Dec 28, 2005 10:08 PM

Anywhere that there is framing of the car. Most likely that its not getting power or enough of it.

Yeah but my question is now would a bad fuse be causing this? When a fuse goes bad, doesn't it normally take away all power? I noticed it only gets that far after the engine is running, so would this have something to do with the ACC? Maybe bad wiring on the car?....yeah...

Pearl96Max Dec 28, 2005 10:16 PM

Check the fuse first then. I figured you would have done that by now. When the cars is running there is more voltage going it to rather than from the battery alone. Hence why it does SOMEthing when its running.

nismos14 Dec 28, 2005 10:16 PM

Also did you press and HOLD the power button to turn the unit on? Just a suggestion.

Wolf-Strong Dec 28, 2005 10:19 PM

Maybe the ground isn't strong enough?
Ah hah! Now that is something I understood!

Yeah I'll do this tomorrow morning and cross my fingers. Bed time! Thanks!
The quote disapeared...excuse my abreviations..

Yeah, I did make sure I tried every trick in the book such as pressing and hodling the power button, pressing other buttons, drop kicking it, hammer, and so forth...well except the last too =P

Pearl96Max Dec 28, 2005 10:22 PM

Good luck, let us know how it turns out and well take it from there.

Wolf-Strong Dec 29, 2005 11:17 PM

Whoot! The deck is now powered and functional...but now there is no sound!

Pictures will come tomorrow mourning, I promise! Had 0 time today and now it is nighttime yet again.

Ok so now here is my new question; what is the best way to mount the new speakers in that huge gap that use to be the Bose amp/speaker on the doors.

Also, I noticed there are 4 wires..so which ones do I connect to the speaker?

In the rear, there is that Bose amp, and I'm told bypassing it is a nightmere come true...Any instructions/info on bypassing it?

Many of the sites in the stickies no longer exist so that is why I am asking :(

AscendantMax Dec 30, 2005 12:27 AM

was it a bad ground?

and what do you mean by huge gap in the doors? you're not using the baffles correct? on my 3rd gen, i was using a mdf ring mounted on a 1/4 inch mdf board that replaced that stock baffle. then i mounted my speaker on it.

Wait baffle is that huge thing the Bose speaker was set in, right? erm...could you explain it a little better to me? Sorry, I get confused really easily...

nismos14 Dec 30, 2005 04:39 AM

Just run new wire to new speakers and your set. Better off in the end too.

yeah, that plastic thingy that bolts onto the door. the speaker is then secured onto that.

Wolf-Strong Dec 30, 2005 11:53 AM

Wait don't I have to bypass that amp?

Wolf-Strong Dec 30, 2005 01:00 PM

You guys won't believe this...I go and take off the door panel only to find this!
http://conclaves.net/images/maxima/panel_thumbnail.jpg
http://conclaves.net/images/maxima/door1_thumbnail.jpg

Now I have no Bose thing to harness those small 4x4" speakers! The drivers side still had a speaker. This really makes me wonder what else could be wrong with the entire car that I may not know about...

What should I do from here?

AscendantMax Dec 30, 2005 01:05 PM

see that big hole? there suppose to be a plastic baffle bolted there. contact james92se to see if he still makes MDF mounts for 6.5" speakers. they bolt right up to the stock location.

I have 4" speakers though...would I be better off trading them in for 6.5" speakers if I got that mount from him? Also, I noticed there were 4 wires, so how would I go about wiring that...?

Do I need this right here?

Now it gets even better. Turns out you are not allowed to work on your car in the apartment complex AT ALL which means you can't even change a damn tire! So now my car got TOWED!!!

To make this day get any better, it is going to make me late to work...and there are at least 3 other things that have gone wrong today which I would rather not talk about...

nismos14 Dec 30, 2005 03:47 PM

Hole crap!!! Does it explicitly say that you can't do ANYTHING on your car? or what???

I honestly don't know or don't care at this point because I'm hopefully not going to live here much longer. The lady at the main office literally said "I stop anyone I see changing their oil, changing a tire, or even have their car opened up in a way that they might be doing something. All we let you do here is park and unload".

AscendantMax Dec 30, 2005 04:33 PM

that's stupid. how the hell can people do anything if there's a flat?

back to your question, i personally perfer 6.5s over 4". the larger speaker gives me a better midrage than the smaller 4". i think you'll be better off with 6.5s. the mounts you can either make yourself, or just get them from james. his worksmanship is pretty nice. i'd take a pic of mine right now since it's sitting in my room, but don't i have my digicam :(

as for the wiring, i don't have the bose in my 3rd gen. they should have a harness for it. let me ask this guy to chime in...

nismos14 Dec 30, 2005 04:33 PM

You should park and unload on her a$s!!!!!!

Does he make them for 4th g's too?

kcidmil Dec 30, 2005 04:37 PM

Forget that, I would do like I normally do, keep working and ignore the person. I would check the contract you signed, unless there's something in there that says you can't work on your car... the lady at the main office can stick it.

hmm.. i don't think so. he drives a 3rd gen, so he had time to replicate the one he made for himself. don't think he has the template for the 4th gen (unless it's the same shape)

let me try to take a pic of my mounts with my crappy webcam...

nismos14 Dec 30, 2005 04:40 PM

Lol alright. Thanks.

kcidmil Dec 30, 2005 04:48 PM

For the speaker wiring harness... there should be 4 wires... 2 of which are amp signal wires from the H/U, the other 2 went to the speaker. You need to tap into the amp's signal wires and use them as speaker wire. You should be able to then use a adaptor for the H/U.

It's been about 3 years since I've done this... here's a good page about it.

http://www.geocities.com/craigbrace/ click on "How To" and it's like the 3rd link down.

Wolf-Strong Dec 30, 2005 09:37 PM

Wait so I would take the 2 amp wires and wire those to the speakers and that should work? It seems like making a bracket shouldn't be too hard, but unfortunatly I don't have the tools here to work on that, so hopefully he can sell me the needed bracket.

If someone could write me step by step instructions how what to do to wire the speakers, that would seriously make my crappy day today much better.

Given what has happened today, when I ever move out of this place, I can promise I will leave with a bang like put a crappy $100 car on their porch with no tires/rims so when they tow it...oh sweet revenge. Sadly enough, they have done worse things than this to the people who live here. Not kidding you, no washer/dryers for months on end when that is in their contract, NO parking spots available after 6pm, mold issues everywhere, horrible plumbing...god it is not worth the $1600+/month. Unfortunatly my mom isn't financially secure enough to go for anything better or even afford to move, which I why I aim to make enough money to get her a better place one day...

AscendantMax Dec 30, 2005 09:42 PM

1600 a month with those kinda restrictions is kind of :jeffy:

EVERYTHING is in that write-up on Craig Brace's site.

That's ok... living in a place like that would make me forget things too.

We essentially have the same rules where I live... though we're allowed to do oil changes. Just no "major" automotive work. (Note 33 Gallon Air Compressor in my Garage... nothing is "major" automotive work anymore  )

Why a co-worker was rebuilding a 59 Chevy, and I'm fixing to pull my engine and tranny come Summer

Based on these options, which should I get. I am leaning towards Blaupunkt and Infinity, but well open to suggestions! Also give a reason why!

I did it! Screw Frys, Best Buy and Circut city with their $300 service charge! Thanks everyone!
