oppinions on alpine hu's.

i'm in the market to buy a HU and was wondering if anyone had any experiences with the new alpine stuff.

I'm looking at the cda-9856 because it has aux in (ipod) and is sat ready.

Thanks in advance.

Poowill Jan 22, 2006 10:56 PM

The new alpine stuff is crap. But the older decks are good (9815, 9830, 9835). I don't think you will like the "glidetouch" on they're newer decks.

Maximeltman Jan 23, 2006 12:13 AM

got an older alpine deck. very pleased

505max94se Jan 23, 2006 03:04 AM

I definitely like the older alpines although the sq isn't THAT great from any of them (non f#1, and a couple other exceptions)

Fast1one Jan 23, 2006 08:26 AM

I have an older one too....98-- I forget lol...its motorized, sounds good, looks good, gets the job done :)

DMCfirestar500 Jan 23, 2006 09:50 AM

I used to have an alpine 9813, it was nice, but the SQ wasn't very good compared to the kenwood excelon x789 I put in after that. I'm in the market for another H.U. right now and alpines aren't even on my list of what I'm looking at.

f550maranello2 Jan 23, 2006 10:37 AM

alpine= downgrade

myer84 Jan 23, 2006 11:09 AM

Try Pioneer. I've never had any problms and they sound good IMO.

02maxxxSE Jan 23, 2006 12:48 PM

Pioneer and Alpine are comparable. I think Pioneers have better EQ, but Alpines look better hands down. Pioneers have that cheap ricer look that I hate.

By the way, I'd order the Alpine from crutchfield as the price difference elsewhere isn't much and you'll have peace of mind.

Also, the 9856 doesn't have glidetouch.

DesiGLE Jan 23, 2006 01:20 PM

My Alpine CDA-9847 works great with Alpine KCA-420i ipod control interface.

I'll upgrade to eclipse when I get the money.

Metal Maxima Jan 23, 2006 01:24 PM

Pecking order is generally considered:

(1) Denon/Nakamich
(2) Eclipse
(3) Alpine

I have an Alpine, only because I purchase that before I had even heard of Eclipse. In all honesty, I am very pleased with the Alpine, I don't really see the desire to switch anytime soon.

I30 Boogie Jan 23, 2006 01:59 PM

Had a 9833....recently switched to an Eclipse 8445.....COULD NOT be happier with the results. My $0.02.

BBOYSTEVIE Jan 23, 2006 06:03 PM

Have an alpine 9860 only because it controls the 701. Slow to progress from one song to the next once a button is pressed, a cheap feel to it as a whole.

Liked the Eclipse 8053 and Clarion DRZ 9255 (expecially) better as far as build and feel. Alpine wins due to the h701.

kpr10is Jan 23, 2006 06:50 PM

Speaking of which, to the thread starter, I have an Eclipse 8053 w/ Commander for sale :)

1996blackmax Jan 23, 2006 07:00 PM

J/K Man :D

That is a nice combo that kpr10is has. Do not know it it has an auxillary input though.

kpr10is Jan 23, 2006 07:06 PM

Oh, no doubt it was definitely a shameless plug. Worth a shot though :)

It does have an aux in.

seventy, Where are you getting a 9813 for $130?

MannyNJ2k2max Jan 23, 2006 07:24 PM

Since we are into shameless plugs my Eclipse cd8455 needs a new home:)

seventy5impala Jan 23, 2006 07:28 PM

I have a 9851 with two Alpine Amps, Boston Acoustic speakers, and 3 JL Audio 12W6 12s in the trunk. I like it overall. I have an Alpine 6 disc MP3 changer and the iPod interface as well. I'm a brand whore though.

Never had any complaints - I like Alpine's stuff.

Phipps66 Jan 24, 2006 12:54 PM

i had the alpine 7893 and i have love it, i installed the 720i ipod adapter and haven't been happier. i still have the put the stuff in my maxima though

skierxx5556 Jan 24, 2006 01:48 PM

I had a 9815 and switched toa 7998 and the 7998 has the best sq of any alpine deck I have ever heard.

1996blackmax Jan 24, 2006 03:04 PM

The 7998 is a nice HU. I've had two of them. For me the Alpine CDA-7949 paired up with my PXA-H600 was the best Alpine setup I've had (I also had two of these). Maybe even my best setup period. I had them hooked up with the optical connection.

1996blackmax Jan 24, 2006 03:12 PM

Too bad those days are gone ........... :sadpace:

But at least we have companies like Eclipse putting out top notch HU's :D

FreshWes Jan 25, 2006 10:53 AM

If you can get a used 9815 or 9835 go for it... i upgraded to a 9855 and regret it due to glide touch.

SilverGLE Jan 25, 2006 03:47 PM

I've got a Pioneer DEHP 4100 that I've had for years, and am now upgrading to an Alpine HU (9856). Pioneer has great equilization controls, but I feel that their newer stuff looks too "bling" for my tastes. The good thing about Alpine's 2006 models is that they support iPod controls via their "full speed" cable which promises (supposedly) faster searches, etc, and only needs a $30 cable as opposed to a $100 box w/ cables.

505max94se Jan 25, 2006 06:10 PM

The ipod control features are nice but the interface degrades the SQ for some odd reason.

NISMO808 Jan 25, 2006 08:19 PM

Wow this thread kinda took off in the last couple days.

For those of you selling your HU's can you please PM me with a quote. I don't mind buying used as long as the deck is in good condition and it has AUX in.

I checked out the new eclipses and they sorta have that "ricer" look that someone was mentioning before about the pioneers. I think that's why I was leaning towards alpine.

You can PM me for new, or Manny for a excellent condition used '05 top notch Eclipse.

I firmly believe function> form so looks dont matter to me at all.

How does the iPod interface degrade sound quality? Just curious, as I've got a friend with a Alpine 9847 and the iPod interface box and his sounds just fine...

cpuguy06 Jan 28, 2006 10:15 PM

Just my .02 bout Alpine, I love alpine decks, but the newer ones are gettin crappier. Tried to run my new 9855 rca out to the factory amp, o wait I cant only 2v preouts, if u want 4v u gotta spend 500ish. Also don't get iPod interface, get the AI-NET to rca cable and then u have stereo headphone jack and can plug in anything. Also this method costs about 10-15 bucks. Glidetouch also sucks, Im waitin for these new alpines that are comin out in march, they look better than the crappy glidetouch ones now.. Also had 9833 and loved it, many more feature than the 9855. Also the general concensus here that eclipse decks sound better?

BRINKLEY Jan 29, 2006 08:37 AM

I don't understand what you guys are talking about that say Alpine=downgrade. I love my Alpine 9825 and have had many Alpine head units in the past which I have always been well pleased with.

cpuguy06 Jan 29, 2006 09:03 AM

they sound good, but I'm just sayin im not a big fan of the glidetouch, but it looks like they did away with that in the 06 models so its all good.

BBOYSTEVIE Jan 29, 2006 11:10 AM

Playing more w/ my 9860. Scrolling through songs SUCKS.

Some of us have noticed things kind of gowing downhill with Alpine over the last few years. I myself have owned many of their HU's since the early 90's. My favorite HU was one that came out in 1997. I bought the processor that came out the following year for it. In my view, the newer units that had built in processors with more features could not touch those old units. I bought a few on the newer ones and was not as satisfied. I ended up going to Eclipse for my HU's.
