Aftermarket Radio Install

I need some help guys.. I'm putting in an aftermarket head unit.

It has a fold-down, removable faceplate.

And I got this Scosche kit off the web:

http://www.audiooutfitter.com/store/NN1494B.html

http://www.audiooutfitter.com/images...sisnn1494b.jpg

But the thing is, the aftermarket head unit doesn't FIT THROUGH the openings in this scosche bezel kit. It is clearly does not have 1 DIN sized openings. They are more like 0.85 DIN or something. :D :D

So I figure either I can load from front or from the back. If I load from the front, the head unit has to slide through. It is off by like 1cm on the width and 1cm on the height. So I'd have to dremel it up a bit to get the head unit through the scosche slot.

If I load it from the back, like if I put the bezel on AFTER the head unit is in, then the bezel goes around the head unit faceplate really snugly. And it doesn't go back very far. So then the problem becomes that the removable and fold-down faceplate cannot be folded down or removed, thus I can't load a CD..

Any ideas on what I can do? I hate to take a dremel to the scosche kit, to widen the opening a bit, but I just might have to...

Thanks,
Kevin

Your not trying to put it in With the sleeve are you?

maxcosity 02-11-2006 12:34 PM

nope, not using the metal sleeve that came with the head unit. That didn't seem to want to be mounted anywhere, so I just screwed in the head unit to the factory holes.

What bezel did you guys use? And does your aftermarket HU have a flip-down/removable faceplate?

Thanks!

Thats odd, you'd think that scosche would know the difference between a full din and a tweaked size.... What head unit are you running? Are you sure your not using a 1.5 din unit?

maxcosity 02-11-2006 03:38 PM

It only misses by like 1cm or so all around.. If it was 1.5 DIN, it would be much larger..

:(

Anyone else have the scosche kit?

djfrestyl 02-11-2006 05:25 PM

a CENTImeter all the way around? or a MILImeter?

big difference my friend....

maxcosity 02-11-2006 06:34 PM

I think it's about a centimeter. Maybe 5mm. I didn't measure it. It's DAMN close, but not quite.

No one else is using the scosche kit? What about the Metra kit??

nismos14 02-11-2006 09:35 PM

Thats weird cuz even in the pic it looks like it'd be big enough.

I tend to avoid Scosche due to fitment issues. Metra is definately the better choice.

IIRC you do need to mount from behind though.

Yea but from that picture it looks like the Scocshe looks much better than the metra. Metra looks awful.

kpr10is 02-12-2006 10:19 AM

Hate to say it, but installer error?.... Heres the one and only Scosche kit Ive done.

http://plaza.ufl.edu/gator68/tv%20pic%20resized.JPG

And I didnt touch a dremel or trim the kit in any way. The mounting holes were off, so I had to redrill, but that was it.

maxcosity 02-12-2006 02:56 PM

Damn.. That sure fits nicely. I guess my janky CD unit is not as accurate in it's 1DIN claim as the Alpine head units are, eh? :)

:(

Installer aside, the head unit FOR SURE won't fit through either of the 2 openings without shaving off 1/8" per side and 1/8" from the bottom.

kpr10is 02-12-2006 03:20 PM

What head unit are you installing? The one above is a Pioneer.

1/8 inch on every side sounds huge. Theres no way its off that far. You sure the trim ring is off of the chassis itself? Something has to be wrong.

Pearl96Max 02-12-2006 03:21 PM

Definately something wrong here, as Ive never seen a HU Not fit, regadless of what kind of dash kit it is.

PandaXpress 02-12-2006 03:42 PM

:worthless provide some pics and im sure we could help? just a thought :doublethu

maxcosity 02-12-2006 06:17 PM

Yeah I was going to snap some pics, but I didn't, sorry.

I ended up rigging up this pretty tite router (not like Juniper or Cisco, but like to route something out) with my dremel and the circle cutter attachment jig. So it snaps on from the bottom of my workbench. Then I basically just moved the bezel's interior down the guide and shaved off 1/4" on the sides (I measured and it was 1/4" that I needed!!) and 1/8" off the top. It fits snug as a bug now. :)

I guess the HU I got was oversized slightly, but it for sure was no 1.5DIN. That would have been WAY obvious, and not 1/4" off on the sides, 1/8" on height..

So anyways, thanks for all the info guys. If nothing else, you were my morale support through having to hack my Scosche bezel up with a dremel.. :D :D

Later!

kpr10is 02-12-2006 06:34 PM

Still havent said what head unit you are installing...

maxcosity 02-12-2006 08:56 PM

Don't laugh but...

Durabrand CD/MP3/XM Player from Wal-Mart

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/produ...uct_id=3639257

http://i.walmart.com/i/p/00/61/74/46...01_500X500.jpg

It isn't that bad though. It sounds clear, and gets plenty loud w/out an amp, and plays MP3s so... :)

I am selling the Maxima and needed to put something less crazy in there (was a DVD/Touchscreen/Computer setup which I'm parting out and selling)...

Pearl96Max 02-12-2006 09:18 PM

and you Did take that silver trim bezel off correct?

kpr10is 02-12-2006 09:32 PM

lol same thing i asked...i doubt it

Pearl96Max 02-12-2006 09:37 PM

Kevin...most likely he didnt. I cant see for the life of me ANY radio not fitting...and you know this as well.

nismos14 02-13-2006 09:51 AM

Thats too funny :)

maxchef 02-13-2006 10:45 AM

Impossible my friend. :)

maxchef 02-13-2006 01:13 PM

Not really....but it was just an asumption....the bezel and the frame of the face plate that the face plate swivels on may all be one piece, i have seen it before but cannot recalect where...who knows.GOOD LUCK BUDDY!

maxcosity 02-13-2006 10:02 PM

OK, hold on a sec guys, I need to jump in here and dowse the flames.. :D

I *DID* take off the faceplate, although it doesn't stick out at all, and I *DID* take off that silver trim bezel.. I mean, DUH. I've done this once or twice before..

I should measure the damn thing just to put an end to this, and prove they are lying when they say it is a 1DIN unit, but I don't care, the dremel/router did the work nicely, and its in. I'm not going to **** with it anymore just to prove they are morons over there at "Durabrand" and that is why they have the cheapest CD player at wal-mart... :D

But whatever, this nightmare is behind me..

Kevin + Dremel: 1
Scosche bezel: -1 :(
"Durabrand" CD player: -10000 just for pissing me off! :D

djbonsu 02-14-2006 04:59 PM

does the schosce din kit color match the console in the 02-03 max???......:gotme:

maxcosity 02-16-2006 05:21 PM

kind of, damn sure close, but I have the Ti edition, so perhaps my A/C vent housing is a diff color than yours. The scosche kit does not have a nice finish but a piece of 500 grit sandpaper and some nice glossy clearcoat help. :)

slickrick 02-16-2006 05:23 PM
