Double DIN HU recommendations

I'm a stereo newbie, so take it easy... My family got another Maxima, a 1999 with a nonbose factory double din cassette/CD player. Would like to upgrade to better sounding radio/cd player. Like the looks of double din size. Any recommendations for 300-400 dollar range? or any recommended speakers?
I kind of like this kenwood dpx-501... anybody know about how useful the USB port is?
http://www.crutchfield.com/S-XRhLLX8...&display=L#Tab

or kenwood dpx-301
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1134701325295

Thanks in advance.

Just because you have a double din opening does not mean you have to use it.

I personally would stay away from Kenwood products. You are doing right by going to Crutchfield though, they are very helpful.

....I've got an Eclipse AVN for sale if you're interested

Any reason why you don't like the Kenwood? 'cause I'm about to get the same head unit...

Bad track record. I've seen too many units go bad, and I'd rather throw down just a little bit more for a better unit.

Hard to say which has a worse track record, I'm no expert. Both units should have better success rates though.

+1 on double dins looking nicer.

But just to play devil's advocate, is the double din "niceness factor" worth the "quality"?

Nope. And Id avoid Kenwood too myself. You know a deck is bad when you are comparing its reliability to that of stock Bose. Come on.

I highly suggest the Pionner AVIC-Z1. It's a remarkable unit.

I think that's "slightly" out of his 300-400 dollar range. =)

$300 to $400 isn't exactly cheap...I don't know about you guys but I kinda expect a machine that plays CD and doesn't even have its own speakers shouldn't cost that much and even if they do they should last for more than 5 years!

wow it sucks to hear everybody thinks the Kenwoods are bad. at work we've got the Kenwood DDX 6019 and i thought it looked and worked great, and the car guys told me it's really good providing you dont want Nav, which i dont. so i'm probably buying that for my '06 Maxima. i think it's the best idea to go with because you get the dvd player but you don't lose the 6-cd changer (i think)

btw, can anyone be nice enough to explain to me why i can't start my own threads?

To each his own. If you like them, that's all that matters.

Because you don't have 15 posts yet. This does not mean go ***** other threads to make 15 posts.

Blah, I'm in a good mood this morning.

Nice day, just wish I wasn't cooped up writing essays and doing final projects.

Any thoughts on the Eclipse AVN6600? It's a new model, but seems to have all the bells and whistles. I like the fact that the navi is incorporated unlike the Kenwood, but I'm wondering how much info there is to it. 5.9mill points of interest sounds good, but how good is that compared to other navi's?

High quality unit. The only difference between that and the 5500 is the hard drive...which is a user based decision if its necessary or not.

what about jvc's 2 din units?
They have some on ebay going for 600 including shipping that are fully loaded satellite, ipod, and sd support, cd changer controls, dvd audio, etc etc. Has anyone seen their screens in person?
http://cgi.ebay.com/JVC-NEW-KW-AVX70...QQcmdZViewItem

The only thing it doesn't have is navi I don't need it anyway because I'm a man and real men don't get lost
