Using steering wheel controls on a 2k2/3 with an aftermarket headunit.
 

This question has been asked quite a few times, so I am posting the answer here:

"How do I make the steering wheel controls work with an aftermarket headunit?"

This is a two step process. First you have to obtain the PAC-SWI adapter from Crutchfield or some other mobile audio dealer. This will allow you to utilize the radio functions on the steering wheel.
Secondly, to regain use of the trip computer (the one with temp, DTE, MPG, etc.) you have to first locate the small wiring harness you removed from the stock deck, but diudn't use in the install of your aftermarket deck. This is a small harness with 4-5 wires in it. One of these wires is brown with a white stripe/marking. This wire must be cut from the harness, the stripped and grounded. I recommend grounding it to the large metal peice below the vents (you can use a small screw or electrical tape), or any other grounding site. This will now give you full use of all steering wheel controls.

I want to thank whomever posted the pictorials for a 5th generation head-unit removal. It took quite awhile to find that post but it helped immensely. Also thanks to those who advised using an impact driver to remove the 5th generation head-unit. Thanks!!!!

Overall I think general instructions are a bit too hard to locate in the audio section and really belong here.

My two cents regarding general advice in a 5th generation install:

The Scosche NN03B adaptor worked perfectly to switch my 2000 (5th generation) Non Bose factory radio over to an aftermarket (JVC) unit. Also you'll need a Scosche diversity antenna adaptor to switch the stock diversity antenna over to aftermarket antenna input. The antenna adaptor is a Scosche NDA. I got both from www.SoundDomain.com for $13.85 shipped. Those adaptors combined with the installation instructions allowed me to save $80 off of a unit Crutchfield wanted $240.00 for.

Putting an aftermarket radio on stock bose speakers: This applies to any generation maxima, and #4 applies to 4th gen and up.

Your factory Bose head unit sends an unamplified audio signal to the Bose amps. So you want to replicate this as close as possible for the best sq, in theory. There are a few options:
1) You can wire it up as a normal head unit without any Bose adapters, and have a small risk of burning up the Bose amp(s).
2) You can buy the $50 PAC or Scosche adapter, such as the one here

3) You can wire the deck's preouts to the wiring harness in the dash, which will send an unamplified signal to the Bose amps. You have front and rear preouts. Each of those has a left (white) and right (red). So youd plug in RCA ends to the front and rear preouts, leaving a few inches of wire for you to play with. For the front left RCA, there will be 2 single wires inside it. Wire those to white and white/black. The front right, wire those to gray and gray/black. Do the same for the rears, Rear left will be the green and green/black, and Rear right will be purple and purple/black.
4) You can buy the Metra 70-7551 for 4th gen and up, or 70-1764 for 3rd gen (which is usually hard to find locally) which will already have all of Step #3 above done for you, so you can just plug stuff in.

If you need your radio installed asap, the most cost effective way is Step #3. But if you can find the 70-7551 harness, or have time to order it online, it will probably save you some headache. Those are the easiest, most cost effective methods of this installation.

Caution: If the voltage of your preouts isnt a decent amount, you might want to avoid steps 3 or 4 and go with step 2. Low voltage preouts combined with step 3 or 4 will equate to your Bose speakers not getting loud once installed.
