How big of an amp?

If I decided to go with 2 Sony 12" Xplods, how big of an amp would I need? not the DVCs

That is an extremely broad question...

KLoWnPR109 10-07-2001 10:09 PM

well in the crutchfield catalog, they have a power range section and for these subs it is 50-200 watts RMS. I was just wondering how many watts I would need for an amp? Does this mean that I need a 200 watt amp, or since I may get 2 12s, a 400 watt amp? I'm sorry for being broad, its just that I dont really know what I'm talking about regarding subs and amps.

Get the biggest amp you can afford. If you get a weak amp, and you push it to hard you might get clipping with could destroy your subs. So I would try get an amp that is at least 400 watts RMS.

mb1: I think you might be a little confused here. The only way you can get clipping is if you set the gains too high on the amp. If the gain is properly set on the amp then clipping cannot occur even if you crank the stereo up all the way. However, if one were to set the gains too high on the amp and then crank the volume, them clipping could occur. You know what, nevermind, I see where you are coming from here. At first I was confused but now I got you.

Klown: What other kind of equipment do you have in your ride? Do you have an aftermarket HU? How about upgraded interior speakers? Are you planning on ordering from Crutchfield? Gimme some more info here, so we can give you a more accurate suggestion. Let me know!! :D

I dont have my car yet, but Im planning on what I'm gonna get because I'm goin to look at some Maximas today. I want to run everything aftermarket. HU, all four speakers. I would like to run components in the front. Unless I can find better deals elsewhere, I will order from Crutchfield. I will be doing the whole installation myself with some help from my dad. As far as the biggest amp I can afford, I dont really have a budget. I'm not saying that I'm rich, but I've been saving my money for the last 5 years, so I've got some. So 400 watts would be fine? Also, would a cap be needed? Thanks all your help.

I just noticed you said "If I decided". I think you should do a bit more deciding, cuz sony is not the best sub maker out there. Since you're not really on a budget, you could get something much better, and not much more expensive. If you ever get deeper into car audio, you might be kicking yourself for getting sony.(I know I was :) )

Dustyroads, I was saying the exact same thing you are :)

Originally, I was thinking about 2 12 Kappa Perfects but the price was pretty high. I could always go with 1 12 though. We are gettign the car today. I'm not gonna put components in the front because I don't want to have to cut holes in the door panels because it isn't Bose.

would you be interested in my amp for your sub's??
Anthony

Get them, get them!!!! Kicker rocks the house!!!!! :D

KLoWnPR109 10-09-2001 09:45 AM

We aren't getting the car until today after school. I still gotta talk to my mom to see if it will be mine after this summer. She doesn't really like the white paint so the car is more for me than her. I just have to buy it from her but until then, we are going to split it.

Alright, my first suggestion is to get ny96max's amps. The Kicker amps rock the house, and I'm telling you this from experience. Their 4 channel is a little lacking in the power department, but it is still a good amp. Plus his prices are unbelievable!! For $440 shipped you can have 2 amps. The ZR240 costs $350 alone!! When it comes to subs, I have stood by JL Audio for well over 7 years now and I still think they are great subs. I have not heard another sub that plays more beautifully, it has a nice blend of SPL and SQ aspects. If you don't want to spend too much on subs, I would look at the 10W0's. These subs will run you about $100 a piece and they will suck up every watt that ZR240 has to offer. I'd get the pair of 4ohm and wire them in parallel, this will give you a 2ohm load which is perfect for the ZR240. For interior speakers, I personally would go with JL Audio XR series components and coaxials, but that is completely up to you. These suckers are on the expensive side, so if you find something that suits your fancy then go for it. Just my personal opinion here. So to recap...

- ny96max's amps a complete must do
- Pair of 10W0's for subs
- JL Audio interior speakers
- Decent headunit must have pre-amp outputs, preferable 3 pairs, but 2 will work

The sky is the limit my friend. Good luck!! :D Oh and did I mention to get ny96max's amps!! :D

If I got 1 12, would it be possible to run components off of it too? Yeah, I had already planned on gettign a HU with the sub outputs. I would like to keep the whole thing under 1000, 800 would be better. That would leaev me some money for an intake, clear corners, and some underbody neons. Well, I went to the Nissan place today after school to pick it up but it was still in the shop getting cleaned and having the cupholder fixed so they said it will be fixed by tomorrow.
