Box build log: 12" Fi Audio Q
Figured I'll let it have its own thread instead of putting it in the big Audio Thread.
The design:
started construction on the box. it's going to be a little smaller than initially planned at 2.1 cu ft. it's really my first enclosure with kerf'ed panels. i reallllllly need to get some big clamps. that would have made things MUCH easier.
yes i'm using screws just to mess with Don
no clamps, so i had to ghetto rig it somehow. it works.

worked on the box a bit more today while there was still some light out.
pick up a clamp at home depot.
works rather nice.
in the process of filling in the gaps with a paste of wood glue and MDF dust.

And here's the sub. Looks pretty nice. Only complaint is the CA glue was running over the edge of the spider landing, but it's no biggie.

it's pretty heavy right now. i still need to put the top panel in, as well as some bracing. it would be much lighter if i used birch, but eh....i had quite a bit of MDF laying around. it'll be even more heavy with the sub installed. the sub alone is ~30 pounds.

MDF is the only way unless you are into fiberglassing
Which is always the best solution but who has the time and money right?

how is birch a bad idea? i've used birch in a lot of builds. it's much lighter and a bit stronger than MDF.
MDF is favorable since it's fairly cheap. birch is roughly twice the cost of a sheet of 4'x8' MDF.

ive hit around 140 db @ 40hz with 600 watts + a 15" Super sub in a birch box that was made like crap (made by me), and it sounded amazing.

The stuff you find at home depot and such is usually NOT void free, and only 7-9 ply Vs. 13 ply for the good stuff...
Usually void free 13 ply birch ranges from 50-100 dollars for a 5 x 5 sheet...depending on location. Here in California I have seen prices hover around 70 bucks...

You may have hit a knot (void) in the ply causing it to split...this is why I can't stress enough...if you are going to use birch for a subwoofer enclosure then do it right the first time and invest in quality wood...
Regular veneered birch is fine for low output enclosures for light duty or home projects...but thats it...

Thats a little missleading, birch is only stronger if its void free...
The stuff you find at home depot and such is usually NOT void free, and only 7-9 ply Vs. 13 ply for the good stuff...

as for the dead space, i wanted to flare both sides. and yep it's much easier than tracing out the kerf on the top and bottom pieces.
my old man took the camera again, so i snapped some pics with my phone again.
got the top panel in. first layer of fleckstone is drying. i couldn't flush the sub. i didn't know the OD of the sub is 12.5"...the front panel is 12.5" tall not counting the top and bottom panel.

update: took some better pics today of the fleckstone. got the sub in, and had a quick listen. the thing is a low end monster! there's zero port noise thanks to the flared opening, and the sub is pretty musical. response wise, it's a little warmer than the hertz, but it's keeping up with any music i throw at it. i'll need more ear time to give a better review.
