What are your opinions Kicker's L7?
 

I'm thinking of picking up a 12" L7. Right now I have two Jl 12w6's in a sealed box. Honestly, it's a lot more boom then I need. What I'm looking for is tight, crisp bass to complement the music. I don't need ridiculously loud but it should be able to go pretty loud to show off a bit. =)

Anyway I would have the L7 firing through the ski hole. Any opinions on this sub?

They rock I just got 2 12's this past saturday.They are being underpowered though I need to get another amp

jayson, i know you know your stuff. do you think if i had a 12" l7 firing through the ski hole... and gave it a lot of juice (say - a rf 1000 watt) it would hit hard but still be tight? right now i have a kicker zx360 rated at 500 watts bridged... i don't think that'll be enough for the l7 i think it likes a lot of power.

and whats the deal with the mbq's... would you pick them over the l7 given my situation?

The L7 is a nice sub, good sounding clean all around. 500 watts will be ok if you are truely not looking for monsterous bass.

The quart premiums are to me one if not the best all around subs out. Work very well will various levels of power ( alot to a little). And are one of the best and most acurate out there.

Okay. Let's say I can give them both 800 - 1000 watts. Which would you go with and how would they perform?

Personally I'd go with the quarts. It's capable of being very loud when you want that, and still sounding good through all db levels. Not that the kicker can't but I give the edge to the quart. I also think that if you buy the quart it will be the last sub you buy for at least 5 years.

Anyway, let me bug you with one last question before I go to sleep. :D

Am I doing the right think firing the sub through the ski hole into the cabin? I think doing so will give me more of the bass and still keep it crisp and tight... Am I correct in assuming this or should I be firing it towards the trunk. This goes for the kicker and the quart.

Also ... let's throw one last variable into the equation. I know between the kicker and the quart, you'd go with the quart. How about a 12" idmax? I've heard nothing but good things about these. I think my choice is between these three. Where would you put the idmax in that ranking - also giving it the 800-1000 watts.

Here is what you get when firing a sub through the pass through vs toward the trunk lid.

When you fire the sub toward the trunk lid, you gain about 3db, which is to a human hear 2 times louder. With this loudness comes the BOOM affect. Basically you lose the true punch and snap to a sub. But you do gain some loudness.

When you fire it forward, it probley will not be as loud vs the other method, but it keeps the bass much tighter and more acurate.

So if your looking to gain a better sound and don't want it super loud, yes your doing the right thing.

To me the quart at this point is the best all around sub out, and really i don't see anyway you could be upset with it with the right enclosure. After the quart, I'd rank the L7 and Id on the same level. There both very good, infact there all very good. The Id plays very very low but not to a truly "usable" level. Out Of all of them the Id is listed as the most affecent. But in the end I stick with the quart.

No offense, but I don't think MB Quartz subs are anything special. I've only heard one set tho.

For crisp & punchy, with show off ability inside the car.. id go IDMax. For loud outside & inside, and still pretty decent, port the L7. That sucker can get LOUD ported.

Youll find more info on both the L7 & IDMax at SoundDomain. The Quartz isnt recommended much for subs, if ever, itd be for the Q series component speakers.

I think one of the reasons that most people don't say anything about teh quart is cuz most people han't played around with the premiums. If anything they play with the referenz which is ok but not great, or the discus which is just weird. And you can't judge a line by just one product, there is a reason why they make such a range and the price ranges the way it does. Not trying to jump down your back but thats my opinion.

However, gotta note that you are Team MB, and get freebies or huge discount, so value doesnt matter as much to you.

I know MB makes very nice products, and im sure the Premium line is of MB quality, but their prices are much to high compared to other high end products, IMO.

Your right i am part of team quart but what does that really mean? I get nothing for promoting them at all.(bastards)Well I did get a sticker and a shirt. And the only discount i get for quart stuff is from the shop. But in terms of price check this out: Kicker L7 12"$399, Id Max 12" $349, Mb quart Premium 12" $399. All retail wise. So really there right there all in the same price range.

No one really pays retail :) IDMax is more like 275-280, L7's I'm not sure, and MB Quart Premium as you said, are rare.. so the deals on those are far less likely than the other 2 suggestions. Just a matter of supply & demand. As for your dealings with Team MB, that bites. I wouldn't support them if they didn't support me.

i mean.. i love ID Max and Diamond Audio.. but atleast i do suggest other subs.. other components even.. i heard Quarts components before and the tweeters were ear piercing and the 6 1/2 woofers were muddy.. not good front stage.. but you suggest them over and over and over again..

I wish quart gave me stuff free. I'm part of the quart team, but not sponsered at all. I suggest them cuz I think there one of the best, this is why I run them, and am part of the team. If i din't think they where good, i'd be with sombody else. When cash is not a huge concern I usally suggest, quart, focal, and a few other high end names because I feel they are the best. Quart does have the rep with there componets thta the tweeters are to much on axis for alot of people. I think they fixed most of that though with the qsd's. But thats another thing.

Compared it with 2 12 v2 idq's, 2 10in w3s, and i KILLED them. All apps in sealed spec boxes. IDmax = LOWER, LOUDER, TIGHTER. And i dont mind not being heard outside, in fact its what i prefer.

but then again everyone is different and the types of music will reflect the types of speakers they like.. so i guess i can't really fault you on loving quartz.. sorry if i came off the wrong way..

Ok, after looking exhaustively at both the kicker l7's and the id max's it looks like I may end up with the kicker's after all. People here have generally agreed that the id max's are better than the l7's but no one has said that they are THAT MUCH better - everyone is putting the l7 right up there with the id max's... Now, I would go with the id max naturally but it looks like the cheapest I can find the 12" id max for is $450. I can pick up an l7 for $200 on ebay.

Now, is the id max twice as good as the l7? Probably not right? Looks like i'll end up with the l7 after all!

This was my experience with my Maxima, when I had my subs pointed towards the Ski hole, my subs were a lot lot louder than when I pointed them towards the trunk.. now I'm not saying you're wrong, probably right in most cases, but at least in my case when I switched it so they faced the trunk it got way less loud... I'd say with any system just make sure you get some extra wiring so you're not bound to one position setup, and play with your setup and find out what sounds the best... moving a box around isn't that big of a deal, as long as you don't have one of those huge custom boxes that weigh like 500 lbs! Hey btw guys, do you think a JBL 1200.1 will underpower two 12l7s?
