Autox help...input needed

Today was the 3rd solo 2 even I've participated in and I seem to be stagnant. I ran a longer course today, but it was faster than the course I've previously run. I have figured out the tire pressure...45-50lbs in the front and 50lbs in the rear works well...anyone with a 6spd have any input on what gear they run in...ran good times in 1st gear because it kept me smooth and I didn't get myself into any trouble and I've got the power to grunt out of the corners...2nd is nice because I have a wide powerband to use, but find it a little low on the power...equivelant times in both 1st and 2nd gear...

2nd...what class are you guys running? i ran in street mod. 245/40-18s, tokico's and vogtlands, stb and rear sb, poly mm and shifter bushings, upgraded clutch and lines, intake, exhaust, underdrive pulley. I also have a CF hood...that is what as I understand puts me in SM. check www.cnyscca.com for today's event times and last mo's event times...look on pg 2 for the first event. i am the only maxima. i haven't looked at the times from today yet but they should be up momentarily. chime in and let me know what your thoughts are. thanks. i have a ltb to install too, but i think the falken 512's are the weak link at this point.

A few things:

1. those tire pressures sound a bit high....at those pressures, you may not be getting all the tread on the road. I run about 40psi front and 45 rear these days, and my VQ30 is heavier up front than your 3.5....You might be overcompensating for the soft sidewalls of the 512's.

2. The 512's are a decent all-season tire, but NOT up to the task of autocross. I suggest you pick up some "summer" tires (UHP) or popular, inexpensive autocross tires (Hankook Ventus RS-2s or Falken Azenis), which will provide stiffer sidewalls and better grip. Also, you will destroy the soft-compound 512's in no time. Definitely your weak link for autocross.

3. 1st gear? That sounds odd, unless it's a REALLY small course. Most autocrosses I go to, the only cars that even try to run in 1st are the S2000's with their 9000rpm redline. I run almost all courses in 2nd (and I have a 5speed) - if you're a 6mt I suggest running in 2nd. The 3.5 definitely has enough torque to power out at mid-rpms when needed.

It would be useful if you could post a pic or video of the course - then we'd have a better idea of what you're looking at and how to approach future events.

thanks for the input. i appreciate it. i hate getting beat by a domestic turd 20yrs old!
how come you're running dsp?

as for your feedback. I did go that high to prevent the sidewalls from buckling under. maybe a bit too much. last track day i had them at 45 and that seemed pretty good but chewed the tires up pretty bad. the pics I have are very limited. the track was pretty long, but the course design kept it from being really fast. it was faster than the last course. i have a few pics but have to upload them and i have got to get to bed...gotta work in the am

I've had a couple sets of the Falkens...they have VERY soft sidewalls, no doubt.

At events, it's a good idea to use white shoe polish (in the bottle) to make small marks along the edge of the tire tread, so you can see how far the tire is actually rolling over, and adjust air pressure to get it right.

I run DSP because its actually a bit slower around here. STX in this area is SUPER popular, and tons of fast, heavily-modded cars are in it - particularly Subaru Imprezas, Honda Civics, and several other fast types. DSP is usually a couple very quick Hondas and several larger sedans (Saabs, Maximas, etc).

I have no chance of finishing top-3 in STX (usually about 20 cars at local events in that class) whereas DSP usually has 6-10 cars, only about 1/2 of which are very competitive. Yeah, I'm weak for doing that, but a top-3 gets me tire contingency money from Hankook, so I have to go after that!!

you can see the shoe polish on the tires in this pic:
