ASU174's marathon detailing day

Eagerly anticipating the UPS man to arrive with a box-load of goodies, ASU174 decided to play a bit of hookey from work today and detail his ride.

The goods:
http://images.cardomain.com/member_i...6_379_full.jpg
Black Sapphire Gel Dressing
Sonus High Gloss Acrylic Spray
Klasse Concours Kit
Meguairs Final Inspection Spray
Meguairs Soft Wash Gel
Meguairs Gold Class Leather Cleaner
Mother's Claybar

I don't have pics of the completed product yet, because I am not even halfway done. I am just procrastinating doing any more work because I am friggin exhausted.

Anyhow, so far I am pleased with everything I bought, especially the tire gel and acrylic spray. We'll just have to see how durable they are after a few days.

Y2KSESteve Jan 26, 2004 04:32 PM

Sweet. I want to see some pics. :)

asu174 Jan 26, 2004 04:50 PM

oops, I just accidentally rated my own thread with one star (worst).... :(

maximadave Jan 26, 2004 04:58 PM

buy some microfiber towels Andy. I wanna see pics!

asu174 Jan 26, 2004 05:19 PM

Oh, I've got a TON of microfiber towels. I spent $20 on those alone.....

PrinzII Jan 26, 2004 05:26 PM

:worthless:

I am curious to see what she looks like so far.

asu174 Jan 26, 2004 05:29 PM

Damn, I've got a pretty good pic too...... I never thought a white car would have so much bling.

Plus my bicept is about to explode I think.

PrinzII Jan 26, 2004 05:39 PM

Andy, what stage are you at now?

asu174 Jan 26, 2004 05:42 PM

My pics are fixed....

I wish that my car was black sometimes, so I could REALLY get the mofo to shine. I guess this is as good as it gets though....

The car was fully claybarred and hit with 2 coats of the red bottle and 2 coats of the grey bottle.

asu174 Jan 26, 2004 05:45 PM

It's getting dark, so the pics are hard to tell how shiny it is, but I am pretty happy with the results.

I am ESPECIALLY happy with that Sonus acrylic spray and the tire gel stuff, so long as it doesn't spin off all over the side of my car. Prinz- have you used either of that stuff before?

PrinzII Jan 26, 2004 05:51 PM

Never used Sonus before, but I have heard very good things about it.

I saw the pics and

How long did it take you?

PrinzII Jan 26, 2004 05:54 PM

By the way, how many coats of SG did you put on it? Many folks (myself included) put in 2-3 coats and then top it with a nice carnuba.

For example, here's a pic of another Autopian's Integra. The car has Klasse topped with Souveran.

asu174 Jan 26, 2004 05:59 PM

It took 4 hours with one 20 minute break to make this thread and take a whiz. Not too bad.

The red bottle is easy to work with and remove, but the grey sealant bottle is absolute hell. I did 2 coats of each though......after the clay bar of course.

maximadave Jan 26, 2004 05:59 PM

damn Andy, you sure keep your garage clean!

Hmmmm...I might have to do that next time around.

The thing I don't understand is that the red bottle says it removes everything from the paint, so technically, the next time I use it, won't it remove the previous coat of sealant and wax?

Should the order of waxing be.....
1. Polish
2. Sealant
3. Polish
4. Sealant

OR

1. Polish
2. polish
3. Sealant
4. Sealant

I did the latter because I was afraid the second coat of polish would remove the prior coat of sealant.

Make sense?

03BlkSETE Jan 26, 2004 06:03 PM

Damn, your car looks sick. I wouldn't want to drive it after getting that clean. You need one of those giant plastic bubbles that I've seen on Autopia to keep the dust of it now.

Awesome job!!

Thanks! I'm completely OCD. I just repainted the garage floor too.

PrinzII Jan 26, 2004 06:03 PM

How'd you apply the Sealant Glasze?

PrinzII Jan 26, 2004 06:07 PM

One thing you'll like about it is the fact your car will be blingin' for around 6 months. When I did my '94 I put 3 coats of the Sealant Glaze on it and topped it with souveran 2 months later. The car was still shining despite the salt and other stuff that assaulted it. When I topped it with the Souveran, it had more pop to it.

Microfiber pad. Let sit for 2 minutes. Wipe off.

a) The second way is correct. If you are trying to remove swirl marks, you would have a secondary polishing step to reduce or eliminate swirls and then follow it with the AIO. There are only three ways to remove Klasse. One is Prepsol, the other is washing the car with a rubbing alcohol/soapy water solution, third is 3M Adhesive remover.

b) One thing I learned in applying Klasse by hand is that using foam pads is excellent. Helps even the distribution of the product.

c) What I just explained to you is called layering. Many folks top off Klasse with a nice carnuba to add more depth.

asu174 Jan 26, 2004 06:20 PM

Cool, then I did everything right. Can I add the layer of carnuba after my next wash? Or will I need to reapply another layer of Klasse?

I use Meguairs soft gel wash if that makes a difference.

PrinzII Jan 26, 2004 06:29 PM

Sure you can. As long as you let the Klasse cure for at least 24 hrs, you are all good. :D

BTW, did you treat your rims?

asu174 Jan 26, 2004 06:35 PM

Yes, on the rims I did one coat of red, one coat of grey, and cleaned up the rest with the Sonus. Man, that stuff is nice.

GodsmackMAX Jan 26, 2004 07:15 PM

Man those pics are great!!! You could have a calendar all by yourself! Wish I had newer finish to take care of. Oh well... one day

Well I bought Cattmans car and totalled that one within 2 weeks or so. Now I have another 97 5 spd that I'm slowly swapping all of the parts onto. www.azmaximas.org/steve for a couple pics of both the cars. That turbo max - Guy called and threatened me at my work, said he was going to beat my @ss if I didn't stop telling people not to buy his car. I laughed at him and told him to come down, but he never did... The guy seemed sketchy too, so I'm glad you decided not to pick it up as well...

ICULookN Jan 27, 2004 10:10 PM

Nice car Andy, You've given me some ideas for my max when we get some warm weather in B'more, will this procedure be correct?

1/ 1 coat Klasse all in one
2) 2 coats of silver wax to cover fine scatches on Sterling Mist
3) 2-3 coast of Klasse Sealant glaze
4) 2 coats of P21S carnuba wax
5) 2+ coats of gold class

Can I apply Klasse sealant glaze on top of wax, will it scrip the previous wax coatings? Do I have to give the 24 hour turnaround time between each coat of Klasse Sealant Glaze?

In a nutshell, you cannot put a wax before you apply the Sealant Glaze. AIO has two purposes. One is to remove oxidation and very light swirling. The other is to prep the surface in order for the sealant glaze to crosslink. If you put a wax on after the AIO, the glaze will not crosslink properly and you will not get the results you desire.

With that said, here's a plan of attack for your situation:

a) Bear in mind, surface prep is a key element of this process. Make sure you clay the car after washing it.

b) Since you are interested in swirl removal, you mighjt want to consider the ancilliary step of using a swirl remover like Einszett, Meguiar's or 3M.

c) Apply the AIO

d) Apply SG. Wait 24 hrs to ensure it cures before applying coat #2.

e) After final coat of SG, apply P21S to add depth and gloss.

BTW, this was my '02 after claying and AIO

asu174 Jan 28, 2004 07:58 AM

So Prinz.....what's my next step? The Pinnacle wax or P21S? I will probably put one more coat of sealant glaze on this weekend.

asu174 Jan 28, 2004 08:00 AM

Actually if you could post a link from properautocare.com, I would really appreciate it. I can't even figure out which Pinnacle wax to get.
